Honorary, Instructor and Proficiency Degrees

It is the practice of the Kodokan, the Budokwai and other Judo organizations to issue degrees in Judo for accomplishments other than contest skill. At the discretion of the instructor, degrees may be given for superior accomplishment in form work (Kata), for ability in teaching, or for services in promoting and furthering the Art.

Degrees for services rendered are honorary degree and may be compared to the honorary degree of Ph. which is given by universities to outstanding citizem or scholars.

Form and instruction degrees are proficiency degrees and represent high acheivement in the Art of Judo, though the wearer of the degree may not be trained for contest.
