THE LITERARY 3ACSGROUND TO DŁUGOSZ’S LETTER OF DEDICATION TO CARDINAL ZBIGNIEW OLEŚNICKI

The paper’s subject is the letter of dedication a: the head of Jan Dlugosz’s history of Poland Annoles seu cronicae Regni Poloniae (completed in 1480). The person honoured in this dedication, Chancellor of Poland and D!ugosz’s patron, Cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki, had already been dead for some 25 years at the time when it was written. No doubt much time must have elapsed on pre-liminary preparations before the letter itself could come to be written, containing what is, in effect, a maturę and 'elaborate treatise on the theory of historiography; but the dedication was given its finał literary form and added to its author’s history only shortly before the work’s completion, about 1479/80.    ,

The paper is limited to a discussion of two important eulturaland literary aspects of this epistoła dedicatoria. The Srst is Diugosz’s own position regarding the confiict between his master, Oleśnicki, and King Casimir the Jagellonian. Though naturally sympathetic to Oleśnickie cause, Długosz was nevertheless able to maintain a consistent and brave attitude of personal disintere-stedness. The second point is the special releyance of this letter as a piece of textual evidence in the old debate whether as a historian Długosz was a „mediaeval traditionalist” or a „humanist innoyator”. The author looks at the literary and philosophical traditions and the ąuestion of style in the letter, and arriyes at the conclusion that even in his dedicatory letter Długosz was a represen-tative of the period of transition, combining his own, traditionally mediaeval standpoint as regards ideas and concepts with the ńew humanist methods of historical research.
