THE LUNGS.

It is not the intention of this work to treatconsumption or todeal with any of the serious lung troubles. If a person is afflicted with phthisis “go to a physician.”

The siinplest and wisest way to strengthen the lungs and increase their capacity is:    " Use them."

If people will not of their own accord do morę than ordinary breathiDg then they should be madę to breathe deeply. How? By quick leg work, by ranning and leap-ing, by the exerc:ses that demand a great expenditure of forte in a short time.

Bicycling, riding, lawn tennis, baseball, and all in and out of door sports that cali for quick movement, will both increase the capacity of the lungs and strengthen them.

When using the E.\erciser take the moeementsshown by Figures 30 and 31, for widening and deepcning the chest, brcathing deeply when raising the arms from the side, and exhaling when lowering them.

As the lungs depend for their nourishinent on the blood, try to furnish a good quality of blood—this mcans good food and proper digestion. Blood is purified in the lungs, hence there must be no obstruction in the breathing ap-paratus.
