You will generate leads from eager, spending customers that businesses so desperately need. So, selling your leads to these businesses will be like shooting fish in a barrel. They will welcome your services and easily pay you to help boost their sales. Now the real beauty of this method is that businesses will pay you EVERY MONTH for your valuable leads. Let s get started& & . Setting up your lead machine The best way to get customers is through Craigslist. However, you cannot just blindly put up ads. The reality is that you need to follow certain specifics especially when it comes to your ad creation. Most advertisers on Craigslist don t do it right because they don t create an attractive ad that generates leads. I am going to show you the winning difference! One that will give you a steady stream of leads& .. Now we are going to start out with our local area& Later on, we will go over targeting other areas. The tricky thing is that Craigslist allows advertisers to easily setup ads in their local area. However, if you post outside of your geographic area, your ads will get  ghosted . I will show you later on how to solve this problem! Now we need to pinpoint businesses to target. So head over to craigslist.org and select your geographic area. Our focus is going to be the services area on Craigslist. That is the area where will place our ad. Let me share with you some businesses that I ve found to be the best to go after: locksmith tree remover electrician plumber carpet cleaner mover junk remover pet sitter home inspector painter landscaper roof repairer Now if you take some time to click on the services links and check out the ads you will see numerous businesses advertising the services. 95% of them get it wrong by not developing an appealing ad. These ads lack appeal in their headline as well as their copy! I will show you how to create effective ads but for now we have to sign up for an account so go to my account link on the Craigslist home page and sign up for your account. You need to have a telephone number or cell phone numberto finalize verifying your account so be sure to have one ready. Only setup one account and after you have completed the process, we can then begin advertising. Now, because we will be generating leads, we need to establish a new phone number that will forward to our phone number. I don t recommend using your current phone number for advertising unless you want to be bombarded with phone calls on your own phone. I suggest using a call forwarding service that has voicemail. OneBox is an excellent service that will allow you to setup local phone numbers that forward and have voice mail. Let s say that we decided to generate leads for plumbers. So if we click on either skilled trade or household services, we will see some advertisements from plumbers. Just for fun, if you click on some of the plumber ads, you will notice that for the most part, they are not very compelling. Now, we are just generating leads so you need to first attract attention with a good headline. I ALWAYS offer a strong benefit in the headline and that usually involves a discount. Customers want reliable service but they are also looking to save money. So some good headlines that I would use are:  Reliable Metropolitan Plumbing Service  25% Discount For New Customers  Experienced Professional Plumbers  20% Craigslist Discount Almost all advertisers get their headlines completely wrong as they don t offer an enticement in the headline. Yet, you will get the most response with a discount or some other enticement in the headline. You re probably thinking how you can just arbitrarily offer discounts and yet you will be passing along these leads to other businesses. The reality is that plumbers as any other business are hungry for new customers and when you later present these leads to them, you will stipulate that they must honor or offer these discounts if they accept your leads. And they will since they are likely to get repeat business as well as good word of mouth that leads to other sales. So again, your headline is two parts. First, you list your service, stressing the quality. And then, you will offer a strong benefit that entices customers to click on your ad (discount/sale/fees waived/etc.) I will say that if your headline does not look like most of the other headlines, then you ve got a winner! You want it to stand out. It doesn t have to be over the top. Just follow the formatting above and you will do great. Now let s talk about crafting the body of the advertisement. When you design your content, there are three things that your text has to mention: 1) The services that you provide 2) The quality of your service 3) Your discount/sale/fee waive reiterated Now, because customers will be calling us up, we have to set up our ad so that we can pass along these leads easily to businesses so the key thing is not to use specific names in our ad or when we talk to them on the phone. Let me give you an example of effective content: Whatever the size of your plumbing problem, we can handle it! Here are just some of the areas that we handle: Kitchen sink clogs Flooded basements Broken garbage disposals Broken toilets Frozen pipes Our experienced, professional plumbers will come out to your home or business and deliver quality service. We service the entire metropolitan area. We are available 24/7 and your satisfaction is our highest priority. Call us at (xxx)xxx-xxxx and mention this ad for an immediate 20% discount off of your service. So you need to follow the above 3 points in the ad. If you have trouble creating the content, let me suggest that you review competitor ads for some ideas but just be sure that you hit all 3 points. You will find that new ads will get posted all day so I strongly suggest that as your ad starts to sink to the bottom that you delete it and create another ad but in order for the ad to go through successfully, you will have to create a slightly different headline and body. Now you will need to convey the same points but just with different text. This takes a little practice but as an example, if our headline on our first ad read:  Experienced Professional Plumbers  20% Craigslist Discount Your second headline could read:  Quality Plumbing Service  20% Off For New Customers Now with the content of the ad itself, you need to change the ordering of your text as well as add some new text. Again, this takes practice but if we go with our sample content above as being in our first ad, our second ad s content could read: Our dedicated, experienced plumbers offer fast, friendly service to your home or business. No matter what the plumbing problem, we can fix it for you! We are available day or night and we offer immediate, same-day service. We handle: clogged drains frozen pipes sink installations and much more& . Futhermore, we are offering a 20% discount for new customers. Call us today at (xxx) xxx-xxxx At any given time, you should only have one ad running so just be sure that you have your new lead generating ad ready after you delete your older ad. Handling Leads Now, for the phone number, I strongly suggest going with OneBox (www.onebox.com) and getting a local number with voice mail. The advantage is that you are able to field calls whether you are available or not. Ideally, you want to be able to answer the calls when they come in but when you cannot, your inbound call will go to voice mail. Customer service is everything so be sure to have your voice mail greeting setup so that it assures the caller that they will get a return phone call right away. Here is a good sample greeting:  Hello! Thank you for calling about our plumbing services. If you please leave your name and phone number, we will get back to you right away. Thank you so much! Make sure that you stress that you will get back to them right away. With an effective headline and good solid copy, you will average 1-4 calls per day. Now if they call and you pick up, you need to quickly get their information down and indicate to them that someone will call them back. So when you get a call, here s how it should proceed: You: Hello& this is Michael! Are you calling about our plumbing services? Caller: Yes! I had sort of an emergency. Can you guys come out sometime today to fix a broken toilet? You: It s not a problem. The owner just stepped out but I will give him your information and he can give you a call back within 10 minutes. Does that sound good? Caller: That s fine! You: Ok, let me have your name and telephone number. Caller: Sure, my name is Tom and I m at xxx-xxx-xxxx You: And what area are you in? Caller: I m in Glenview You: And other than the broken toilet, is there anything else that I should pass along? Caller: No, that s it! You: Ok, he should be back shortly and I will make sure that he calls you back right away. Caller: Thanks so much With every call, you need name, phone number, area and exact problem. With that information, you now have a lead! Now, whether you get a live call or voice mail, speed is everything! You now have a live lead to convert. So now we need to convert the lead and get our foot in the door of a prospective business. Converting The Leads We need to convert this lead so we will go after plumbers that service the area that our lead is in. I find that those plumbers that don t have websites are MUCH better candidates than those that do. In my experience, the ones that aren t as savvy with marketing are even hungrier for business! So based on our example, we know that our caller is in Glenview, IL and is looking for a plumber. So we fire up Google and type in the format of: Area + service So in this case, we would put in: Glenview plumber We see a lot of results. So we want to focus on geographic area, so we click on Places on the left-hand column in Google so we can just look Glenview plumbers. The first few pages have all websites but starting with page 2, we start to see some good prospects. We quickly jot down every plumber that doesn t have a website ***IMPORTANT: This stage of the process is very important so you need to move quickly. Our original caller is looking for a plumber to fix a problem and there is always the chance that he is not going to wait for a call back after a couple of minutes pass by. So remember, moving quickly is so key! So we call up the first plumber on our list& . You: Hello! Is this J&J Plumbing? Plumber: Yes it is! How can I help you? You: Hi! Are you the owner or one of the owners? Plumber: Yes& this is Frank speaking You: Hi Frank! My name is Michael and I m with Midwest Leads Direct. The reason that I m calling is that I get plumbing leads every day for metropolitan Chicago area. In fact, I just got off the phone with a customer in Glenview who is looking for a plumber& .Can you work with customers in the Glenview area? Plumber: Sure! What kind of service does he need? You: Well he has a broken toilet that needs to be fixed. And that probably sounds like something you can handle, right? Plumber: Absolutely! You: OK, so I got off the phone with him about 5 minutes ago and he is looking for a call back. If I give you his info, will you call him back? Plumber: Sure& I ll do what I can to help him out. You: Ok, two more things& .In order to get this lead to call in, we offered a 20% new customer discount. You have to be willing to honor the discount which hopefully will still give you some room to make some profit on the transaction Plumber: Yeah& that shouldn t be a problem. You: Great! And the other thing is that, I would estimate that I get over 40 plumbing leads over the phone every month for the Chicago area. Now, I will give you this lead for free and there s no obligation to work with us but you must allow me to call you back after you ve spoken with lead. The reason being that I want to see how it went and also I want to go over how we can help you do more business. Plumber: That sounds pretty fair. When did you want to talk? You: Ok, well here s his information& ..<give all the details>. So how about I call you back in about 10 minutes? Plumber: Ok, we ll go from there& You: Great! Talk to you soon! Let me share with you 3 different situations that happen when the business calls back the lead 1) The lead has already made contact with another company and is not interested 2) The lead never picks up the phone. (Almost always, this indicates that he has made contact with another company and is using caller id to screen the inbound call) 3) The lead is interested. We never have complete control over what the lead will do. But based on my experience that about 60% of the time, the lead converts. This is an excellent conversion rate if you think about the fact that if you are sending 20 leads to a plumber every month, he should get 12 solid customers out of the deal which is not too shabby! In any event, after 10 minutes, you will call the plumber back and find out what happens. Regardless of whether the lead proceeds or not, this is the time to sell them on your service. So let s talk about what to say to the plumber when you call back& . You: Hi Fred! It s Michael& So how did it work out with that lead? Plumber: Well he is definitely interested and I m sending my partner out there this afternoon. So thank you for allowing me to pick up this customer. You: Absolutely! Now as you can see, it is a pretty straightforward process. I get leads throughout the month by advertising online and your business can benefit from it! All you have to do is be ready when I call you with the lead and then take it from there. Striking when the iron is hot is key so even if you re not in, just make sure that I have a way to contact you as soon as I get off the phone with the lead. Plumber: Well I can give you my cell phone number as well so that if I m out personally on a job, I can at least connect with you and then take it from there. You: Great! What I typically do is work month to month so that I will send you 20 leads every month for $20 per lead. Now I do require The total cost upfront every month so it would be $400, payable by check or credit card via Paypal. Plumber: Now will you guarantee me that I will get leads every day? You: Actually, on some days you won t get any leads, and on other days, you will get 3-4. So, it will average out so that you should get at least 1 per day. And remember that you will end up converting at least half of your leads if not more. So I would say that 10 solid customers from investing $400 will yield you a much bigger return in sales. Wouldn t you agree? Plumber: Oh for sure. Well it does sound like a good deal. How do we get started. You: Well, I can either swing by your office today and pick up a check or if you have online access, you can send me payment via credit card. Plumber: Ok, well why don t you swing by tomorrow morning. I ll cut you a check and we can meet for a little bit. You: That sounds good! I ll see you then! Now, I will add that when you call back, the business owner will sometimes have no luck in connecting with your free lead. You still want to highlight the fact in your conversation that you get leads regularly and that if he s not convinced that these are good leads, you are willing to send him another free lead but he must give you a direct phone number so that you can connect with him as soon as you get off the phone with your lead. Accepting Payment If you decide to accept a check, just be sure that he makes it out you personally. The only way you can accept a check in your business s name is if you have setup a business account at your local bank as well as filing a doing-business-as (DBA) form at your local county office. If you can, always aim for PayPal payment online since you can setup recurring payments. That way, you do not have to worry about collecting payment every month. Let me show you how to set up recurring payment. I will assume that you have PayPal already setup. If not, it is very easy. Just go to PayPal.com and sign up for free. It is a very simple process. However, I would like to go over how to set up recurring payments when customers pay by credit card. After you log into your PayPal account, click on the Profile link and then click My Selling Tools and then on the line that says PayPal buttons click the Update link at the end. On the next page click the Create New Button link. On the next page Under Step 1 in the field labeled  Accept Payments For , select  Subscriptions to set up recurring payments. Under Item name, enter the words  Lead Generation Now at the bottom there are a few more fields to enter: Billing Amount Each Cycle: <enter the recurring monthly amount> Billing Cycle: <set this to 1 month> After How Many Cycles Should Billing Stop?: <set this to Never> Merchant Account IDS: <Use secure merchant account ID> Finally, after all of these fields are filled out, click on  Create Button . We are now going to pinpoint the actually HTML link that we will end up emailing our customers. On the button code page, select the email tab. You will see your recurring payment link. There s no sense in spinning your wheels to try to get multiple ad campaigns going. Instead there are many expert Craigslist posters out there who are dedicated in running multiple campaigns. The good news is that you will find excellent Craigslist posters on all of the major freelance sites: fiverr.com, freelancer.com, and guru.com If you go to Google and enter the following search strings, you will find plenty of candidates: Site:fiverr.com craigslist Site:guru.com craigslist Site:freelancer.com craigslist Now, you only want to focus on those freelancers that offer posting services. Some ads may seem misleading as they have Craigslist in the title and yet the service has to do with CREATION of ads and not POSTING. Furthermore, some may only do posting within their geographic area as opposed to anywhere in the country, so be aware of that. As you go through the listings, you need to focus on those posters who have the highest positive ratings/feedback from past customers. Many posters come and go with Craigslist so it is ABSOLUTELY vital that you look at past history and only go with the best rated posters. As you interview each poster, make sure that they are capable of also deleting ads and reposting new ones as your ad starts to sink to the bottom. Remember that the ads closer to the top will always get more activity! Also, many freelancers are hungry for business so ask them to run a test ad for you free of charge to get a feel for their service. Many of them won t mind doing it as often it leads to long term freelancing projects! Lead Amounts And Pricing The reality is that you have no control over how many leads will come in every day but it is very safe to assume that you will generate over 20 leads every month with your ads. When setting up your initial arrangements with businesses, start at 20 leads and you can always up the leads if you feel that more leads are coming in every month. In terms of pricing, I would price each lead between $20 to $50 with a 20 lead monthly minimum. In order to price properly, you need to look at the business you are dealing with and the average revenue generated for each customer. What I typically do is start out at $20 per lead for a specific business to get a feel for it. If I find that I can easily make it, I will charge $25 or $30 per lead when I work with that same business in another area. Also, I only work with one business type per area so if I am working with a plumber in Chicago, I will not take on any other plumbers in Chicago but I will consider plumbers in other areas. Frequently Asked Questions Q: Should I post anywhere else besides Craigslist? A: No other online classified site comes close in terms of volume of visitors that read ads. I would only focus on Craigslist Q: So many different businesses to go after to sell leads to, how do I pick a good business? A: It is really arbitrary. The rule of thumb is that if you see a business advertised over and over, then it is a good one to pursue. If you re not sure which one to start with, then a good starting point is to select a business type that you rarely see in the ads. So if you were to take my suggested list of businesses on page of this report, go through and focus on one of the businesses that have the least amount of ads posted. Selecting a less competitive business can only help you! Q: When I m making contact with a new business, can t I email them instead? A: Because you are dealing with a commodity that is very time sensitive, calling them up on the phone is the best way for them to convert the lead. Now once you have signed a business up for a lead package, you can conveniently text or email each new lead if the business owner feels that he can get to your new lead faster than over the phone Q: My business wants replacement leads for leads that don t convert, how do I handle this? A: Historically, leads convert at a 60% rate, so I would offer the business owner a proposal. If the business owner finds that more than 10 leads do not convert, you will replace them with new leads at no additional cost. So if the business converts 6 leads out of 20, you will give him 4 replacement leads. You need to stress to the business from the beginning of your conversations that you cannot expect all leads to convert but that you will see at least half convert. So the key is to look long term at the overall lead conversion and they will still make money from your leads. Q: Should I tell businesses that the leads are from Craigslist? A: No. All you have to say is that you generate leads online and can offer them regularly to businesses so they can focus on what they do best while you handle the marketing aspect of their business. Even if they end up finding out that you re advertising on Craigslist, they really won t care as they will make money from your leads and would really not deal with another hassling aspect of their business which you have provided a solution for and that is the marketing of their services! Q: How can I be sure that this method won t get highly saturated? A: First of all, consider the hundreds of different metropolitan areas that you can go after on Craigslist. Add to that the fact that you have different services sections on Craisglist. Furthermore, you have over 60 lines of different ads. When you consider those factors, there s plenty of room for this method! :& Q: You want me to run only one ad and yet I see some businesses with multiple ads  some even have the same ads very close together. Shouldn t I have multiple ads? A: Once you run multiple ads, you run the risk of competitors flagging your ad. If your ad gets flagged multiple times then not only will it be deleted but you will have a tough time ever running an ad from your IP address. Yes you could have your outsourcer run multiple ads but as the ads get flagged your competitors will make it a point to always flag your ads regardless of how often you post your ad. You want to fly under the radar and the best way to do it is to run one ad and as it gets close to the bottom, delete and rerun a new ad. KEEP IN MIND THAT EACH NEW AD SHOULD HAVE DIFFERENT HEADLINE AND CONTENT AFTER YOUR PREVIOUS AD IS DELETED. Very important! Q: How do I handle the calls when I cannot answer the phone? A: As mentioned earlier, you need to use a phone forwarding service with voice mail (like OneBox). What you need to do is allow the call to go to voice mail but you need to be able to call back the lead within 60 minutes. Some leads won t leave a message so you will need to look at caller id of the inbound phone number of your lead (which you will get with each call) and call back when you can. Q: When I setup my ad, should I setup an email address? A: The best leads always come through the phone so I would not allow any email address to show up in your ad. Just post a phone number that will forward directly to you. Q: Do I need a business website for my business? A: It s not necessary. I ve closed most businesses over the phone and almost none ask for a website. If they insist on seeing one, you can tell them that you are in the process of revamping your website and then have a freelancer on guru.com or freelancer.com setup a simple 5-page business website for you which should cost under $75. As soon as it is completed, send them your website address. Q: I m not good with my ad content, what should I do? A: Take 3-4 ads of your competitors and jot down the key services that they offer. Pick out those lines in the ad that grab your attention and think about which passages that would appeal to you most as a customer. It takes a little practice but if you follow the formatting of the sample ad that I showed at the beginning of the text, you will be fine. You don t need to have lengthy text in your ad!
