The Christianization of England

-    Anglo- Saxons were pagan when they came to Britain. In Britain during the sixth and seventh centuries Christianity spread from two different directions.

-    It came directly from Romę when a monk Saint Augustine arrived in 597 (he was sent by pope George I with a group of missionaries) and established his headquarters at Canterbury in the south-east of England. He was madę archbishop of Canterbury in 601, establishing this city as the centre of British bishops, a tradition which has remained sińce. He brought rulers to the new faith, Celtic church brought Christianity to ordinary people.

-    It had already been introduced into Scotland and northern England from Ireland, which had become Christian morę than 150 years earlier.

By the end of the 7^lh century most of Germanie speaking England had became Christian.
