CHAPTER 1: UNIX Introduction

Wliat is UNIX?

UNIX built in late ’60s. early 70s by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie. Originally written in assembler. later rewritten in C (aIłowing greater portability), a language imented by Ritchie. UNIX is an operating system which was first developed in the l%Os. and has been under constant development ever sińce. By operating system, we mean tite suitę ot programs which make the Computer work. It is a stable. multi-user. multi-tasking system for servers, desktops and laptops.

UNIX systems aLso have a graphical u ser interface (GUI> similar to Microsoft Windows which provides an easy to use environment. However, knowledge ot UNIX is required for operations which aren'tcovered by a graphical program, or for when there is no Windows interface available
