The first reaction (1.) involved blocking one of the reactive positions in 2,2’-bithiophene via introducing trimethylsilyl functional group at the 5 position. The synthesis was carried out two times, firstly on a smali (0,01 mol) and secondly, on a larger scalę (0,1 mol). The larger scalę reaction afforded the product featuring 95% purity (based on GC-MS analysis).

In the second synthetic step, derivative of the goal compound was tried to be obtained. Unfortunately the expected tetrakis(5'-trimethylsilyl-2,2'-bithiophen-5-yljsilane (2.) was not formed. In contrast, 5,5'-bis-(trimethylsilyl)-2,2'-bithiophene (3.) was isolated as the only product in a Iow yield (structure verified by 1H NMR spectroscopy).
