Finally, each plant species was weighed (2 g for head-space gas chromatography and accelerated solvent extraction or 50 g for vapour distillation in the Deryng apparatus) and powdered in a porcelain mortar. Three replicates of each sample were processed identically.
Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectromefcric Detection
(GC-MS)
GC-MS and HS-GC-MS analysis was performed by use of a Tracę model 2000 capillary gas chromatograph with a model MS Tracę mass detector (ThermoQuest, Waltham, MA USA), equipped with a CTC Analytics auto-sampler (Combi PAL, Basel, Switzerland), working in the head-space and non-head-space modes. Compounds were separated on a 30 m * 0.25 mm i.d., film thickness 0.25 pm, DB-5 capillary column (Agilent Technologies, Pało Alto, CA, USA; formerly J&W Scientific, Folsom, CA, USA). Helium (p = 100 kPa) was used as carrier gas. The oven temperaturę was main-tained at 40°C for 3 min after injection, then programmed at 8° min-1 to 150°C which was held for 15 min. The injector, temperaturę was 150°C. The mass spectrometer was equipped with an El source operated at 70 eV.

Head-Space Extraction
Head-space extraction is a simple and efficient mean of direct isolation of volatile constituents from a liquid or solid matrix. Two desorption tempera-tures were used, 70 and 80°C. At both temperatures desorption time was 15 min and 0.5 mL head space was introduced to the chromatographic column.
Vapour Distillation in the Deryng Apparatus
The dried plant materiał (50 g) was placed in the round-bottomed fiask and 400 mL water was added. Vapour distillation was performed for 3 h by use of the Deryng apparatus. The procedurę is described in Polish Pharmaco-poeia VI [12]. The distillates (1 pL) were analyzed by GC-MS.
