Position sensitive detectors (PSD) play an impor-tant role in the high-resolution observation of cos-mic-ray heavy ions in space. We are preparing a cosmic-ray heavy ion telescope having a very large geometric-factor. The telescope will be put into a geosynchronous orbit on board the Engineering Test Satellite (ETS-VI) in 1993.1} The objectives of our observation are elemental and isotopic abun-dance of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar energetic particles (SEP) up to Fe nuclides. The position information entering the telescope is used to detemine the pathlength in a AE detector, which is very important value in a AE x E method for particie identification.
The two-dimentional charge division type PSD has an effective area of 62 mm x 62 mm. Although some performances of the PSD for Iow energy
heavy ions (stopping in the detector) from 160 cm
