HUNDRKDS of high-quality radio reeeivers aro bcing junked daily. For a smali cosl you can convert Ihcni to a.c. operation for home use.
In these days of transistor and hy-brid transistor auto radios we are in-cłincd to forget the vacuum-tube models of the lato ’40s. Prior to the widespread adoption of transistors. auto radios had attained a piatem! of high quality with moro or less standardi/.ed Circuitry.
Among the quatity foaturos of these ioceivei*s arc: high scnsitivitv—he-cause of the short antennas used. these sets rcquircd high r.f. gain; a.g.c.—largo signal fluctuations rc-(juire vcry healthy automatic gain control fcatures (not only do hills and other natural ohstacles decrease the signal strength hut power lines along the highway maintain standing \va\es of the r.f. signals l>eing receivcdi; high power output—a sizable power output is required (6-8 wattsi heca use am-hient noisc in an auto is considerahlc. at times reaching !cve!s of morę than 70 db; rugged—these radios musi have considerahlc rcsistance to vihra-tion. Shielding clcctric inlcrfercnce in an automobile is a eritical problem in radio design. The car's clcctrical system and the static elcetrieity <!is-chargc givc off a high intensity noise field so strong that the components of the radio must he completely shicldcd.
Although hetter than the average labie model radio, most aulo receiyers have rat ber limited high-frequeney rcsponsc. The loudspeaker is prohahly the limiting featurc. However, sińce high-intensity. high-frcquency sound is annoying to many pcoplc. auto radios are built to restrict the output from the high end of the audio spectrum. Rceisions in the tono control Circuit can usuatly remedy this.
Getłing a Set
How can you get one of these receiyers? Many cars arc ready for the junk yard after 10 years of use. The ,eceivers in these automobiles have also lost their doi lar value. If inoper-nble. these sets can sometimes bc purehascd for about a riollar. The inoperablc part is usually the vlbrator. which will he discarded in the con-version we havc in mind.
