About the Author
Janusz Korczak was the pen name of Dr. Henryk Goldszmit, a pediatrician and child psychologist who famously ran a central Warsaw orphanage on innovative educational principles; when his children were transported from the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942 Korczak insisted on staying with them and died with them in the Treblinka concentration camp. Korczak left behind a large written legacy, including books on education, plays, essays, letters, and of course, novels and stories for children, including King Matt the First. Antonia Lloyd-Jones is a translator of Polish literaturę. Her published translations from Polish include novels by Paweł Huelle and Olga Tokarczuk, short stories by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, and nonfiction by Ryszard Kapuściński and Wojciech Tochman. Her translations of poetry have appeared in periodicals including the Edinburgh Review. Israeli illustrator Avi Katz has been the Staff artist of the Jerusalem Report sińce its first issue in 1990, and is active in the Cartooning for Peace program. He has illustrated over 170 books in Israel and the U.S. and has received the National Jewish Book Award, the IB BY Hans Christian Andersen Honors (four times) and Israefs Ze'ev Prize (eight times).
