REVISION (POWTÓRKA): Present Simple and Present Continuous

PRESENT SIMPLE

(I, you, they) verb

(she, he, it) verb+s

Positive Negative

I come from Poland. I don't come from Poland.

He/She/It comes from Poland. He/She/It doesn't come from Poland.

We/You/They com from Poland. We/You/They come from Poland.

Questions Short answers

Do I come from Poland? Yes, I do. // Not, I don't.

Does he/she/it come from Poland? Yes, he/she/it does. // Not, he/she/it doesn't.

Do we/you/they come from Poland? Yes, we/they do. // Not, we/they don't.

When do we use Present Simple?

We use the Present Simple with adverbs of frequency such as: always, usually, often, sometimes, occasionally, rarely, seldom, never, frequently.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

(I) am verb+ ing

(she, he, it) is verb+ ing

(you, they) are verb+ ing

Positive Negative

I am ('m) playing tennis. I am not ('m not) playing tennis.

He/She/It is ('s) playing tennis. He/She/It is not (isn't) playing tennis.

We/You/They are ('re) playing tennis. We/You/They are not (aren't) playing tennis.

Questions Short answers

What am I playing? Are you playing tennis? Yes, I am. // Not, I'm not.

What is he/she/it playing? Is he/she/it playing tennis? Yes, he/she/it is. // Not, he/she/it isn't.

What are we/you/they playing? Are we/they playing tennis? Yes, we/they are. // Not, we/they are not.

When do we use Present Continuous?

REMEMBER! Some verbs which express a state, not an activity (e.g. think, like, love, agree, understand), are usually used in Present Simple.
