Five special fossil finds

/\ ty Australopithecus bahrelghazali w JL (named 1997) Discovered in Chad, further north in Africa than most australopithecines, this find proves that the group was morÄ™ widespread than experts first thought.

O Homo antecessor (named w u 1997) A Spanish species that seems to show that Homo ergaster-like hominins staged an early colonization of EuropÄ™.

O Kenyanthropus platyops w O (named 2001) Aweird hominin that has a flatterned face and very narrow nose.

Jt Orrorin tugenensis (named w 2001) A controversial hominin whose leg bones suggest that it was one of the first bipedal walkers.

O 1% Sahelanthropus tchadensis w w (named 2002) A hominid that might be close to the ancestor of the chimp and hominin lineages.

Five fire facts

â–  Experts disagree over which hominin species was the first to use fire.

â–  Homo ergaster and Homo erectus may have used fire for cooking 1.6 million years ago.

â–  Humans used fire long before they knew how to light one. If they found a natural fire—after a lightning strike, for example—they kept it going.

â–  Knowing how to use fire meant humans could settle in colder climates. Humans colonized coid northern EuropÄ™ morÄ™ than 600,000 years ago.

â–  By around 50,000 years ago, Neanderthals and Homo sapiens were using fire to keep warm and cook meat. They struck flints to produce sparks that lit dry wood.
