Introduction
(from Practice Trax for Guitar by Danny Gill)
Beneath the track, you'll find an analysis offering you various scale choices:
1. Key -- This is the overall key center of the progression -- or the relative major if the song is in a
minor key or a mode. This is a good starting point, a way to ground yourself in a song. Use it either as
your main scale for improvisation or as a way of understanding the modal choices provided.
2. Mode -- This can be the same as the key center, or different. In some songs, the mode is the real
key of the piece. In others, the modal analysis may change with each chord -- "covering the changes,"
so to speark. Keep in mind, following the root of each chord with your scales (A chord = A scale, E
chord = E scale, etc.) is rarely something you have to do, but it can be fun and sounds great.
Occasionally, I'll also list appropriate pentatonic or blues scale choices if I think they're especially
relevant. Remember: you can always choose the pentatonic or blues scale that fits in the key, and just
start playing.

Hard funk with the dominant 7#9. Also known as "the Hendrix chord," Dorian is probably the most
common scale for this, but the 7#9 chord has a major 3rd and a minor 3rd, so feel free to experiment.
Dorian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, blues... it's all good!
