Darling Elephant Lovey

Crochet Pattern


Materials Used:
Worsted weight yarn in Red, Yellow, Gray, and Pink. Small amount of white
Size G/6 (4.25mm) crochet hook for head and features
Size H/8 (5.00mm) crochet hook for lovey
Optional~Small buttons or beads for facial features, and embellishments
Small bits of poly-fil
Yarn needle
Needle and thread

Gauge is not important to this project, but my gauge is below:

Gauge: 8 hdc sts=2”
5 hdc rows=2”
You may use smaller or larger hooks, with lighter or heavier yarn for a wider
range of sizes.

Stitches Used/Abbreviations:
Ch-chain
Rnd-round
Sc-single crochet
Sc2tog-single crochet 2 stitches together
Hdc-half double crochet
Hdc2tog-half double crochet 2 stitches together
Dc-double crochet
BLO-work in the back loops only of each stitch
FLO-work in the front loops only of each stitch
Sl st-slip stitch

Head: (Use G hook. Stuff as you go! You start at the back of the head, and
work toward the trunk.)
Rnd 1:
ch 2, Work 8 hdc in 2

nd

ch from hook. Join. (8sts)

Rnd 2: ch 1. Work 2 hdc in each st around. Join. (16sts)
Rnd 3: ch 1. *Hdc in next st, work 2 hdc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (24
sts)
Rnd 4: ch 1. *Hdc in each of the next 2 sts, work 2 hdc in next st*. Repeat (*)
around. Join. (32 sts)
Rnds 5-7: ch 1. Hdc in each st around. Join. (32 sts)
Rnd 8: ch 1. Sc in each of the next 4 sts. *Hdc2tog, hdc in each of the next 2 sts*.
Repeat (*) 5 more times. Sc in each of the last 4 sts. Join. (26 sts)
Rnd 9: ch 1. Sc in each of the next 4 sts. *Hdc2tog, hdc in next st*. Repeat (*) 5
more times. Sc in each of the last 4 sts. Join. (20 sts) (If you plan to use safety
eyes, insert them now, at about rnd 8, and on the opposite side from your
joins. The joining side will be on the bottom, when finished.)
Rnd 10:
ch 1. *Sc2tog, sc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. Sc2tog in the last 2 sts.
Join. (13 sts)
Rnd 11:
ch 1. *Sc2tog, sc in next st*, 3 times. Sc in each of the last 2 sts. Join. (8
sts)
Rnd 12-14: ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (8 sts)
Rnd 15:
ch 1. Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 4 sts. Hdc in
each of the last 2 sts. Join. (8 sts)
Rnd 16: ch 1. Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in next st. Sc2tog. Sc in next st. Hdc
in each of the last 2 sts. Join. (7 sts)
Rnd 17: ch 1. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc2tog. Sc in each of the last 3 sts. Join.

trunk.

Ears: (Make 2 in Pink, 2 in Gray. Use G hook.)
Row 1:
ch 12. Work 2 sc in 2

Row 2: ch 1, TURN. Work 2 sc in 1

Rows 3-4: ch 1, TURN. Sc in each st across. (15 sts)
Row 5: ch 1, TURN. Sc2tog. Sc in each of the next 11 sts. Sc2tog. (13 sts)
Row 6: ch 1, TURN. Sc in each st across. (13 sts)
Row 7: ch 1, TURN. Sc2tog. Sc in each of the next 9 sts. Sc2tog. (11 sts)
Row 8: ch 1, TURN. Sc2tog, 2 times. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. Sc2tog, 2 times.
(7 sts)
Rows 9-10: ch 1, TURN. Sc in each st across. (7 sts)
Row 11: ch 1, TURN. Sc2tog. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. Sc2tog. (5 sts)
Row 12: ch 1, TURN. Sc2tog. Sc in next st. Sc2tog. Fasten off.
Place 1 pink ear on top of 1 gray ear, and, using gray, sc around entire outer
edge, going through both layers at once, and starting in one of the top corners.
Start in the opposite top corner for opposite ear, so your sewing tail is in the
proper place.. Join. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Eyes: (Make 2, unless using safety eyes. Use G hook.)
Ch 3. Work 2 sc in 2

nd

ch from hook. Work 4 sc in next ch. Working the opposite

side, work 2 sc in last st (same as 1

st

2 sc). Join. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for

sewing.

Hat: (Use G hook)
Rnd 1:

Assembly:
Using a yarn needle, pinch top inside of ear together, and stitch one securely to
each side of head, making sure your seam side is at the bottom. (I found it easiest

to draw my tails through the bottom, to tie off after stitching, so they won’t be
seen.)
Place an eye on either side, just above trunk, and stitch securely in place. Stitch
one small button in the center of each eye. (Unless using safety eyes)
Flip the brim of your hat up, and smash the center down, to give it a “rakish” look

. You may stuff, if desired. Place on top of head, and stitch securely in place.

Center head, with seam side down on top of your lovey, and stitch securely in
place.
