Chapter 5 — Exam Question 7
What is quantisation and to which part of the scanning process does it relate?
Answer
Sometimes referred to as ‘Radiometric Resolution’, Quantisation is the number
of discrete grey levels, which store the energy as measured by the sensor. E.g. 8
bit allows 2
8
=
256 levels of energy (grey levels).
In the scanning process, Quantisation occurs after electrons were transferred
from EM energy (photons) and in order to quantify EM energy, from the sensed
object.
