What does CCD stand for and what is it used for?

Answer

CCD stands for Charged coupled device. It is a detector of radiated EM energy,
i.e., It is a photo-sensitive detector. CCDs operate today up to a maximum of
2.5 µm (MIR) and as such do not satisfy applications that need Thermal Infra-
Red (TIR). It is used in a linear array for scanning in Pushbroom systems (or
office scanners) and in a 2D array in digital cameras.
