POWERCONTROL

Increased Power Transparency, Reduced Costs –
the Modular Power Management Software

background image

Almost all businesses have an enormous potential for a sustainable

reduction of power related costs. So that you may successfully uncov-

er these potentials for savings, we offer the modular SIMATIC power-

control power management software. This standard software is based

on tried-and-tested industrial technology. It provides transparency

of power related costs and energy fl ow within your facility, thanks

to automated recording of power data. With this knowledge, you can

optimize your energy consumption step by step, and thereby reduce

your power related costs.

Step-by-step towards optimized operation

The SIMATIC powercontrol power management software and its expansion
module SIMATIC powercost create the basis for a continuous improvement
process by providing you with comprehensive knowledge of your power
fl ows and costs. This transparency facilitates cost allocation based on
actual consumption analysis of your power costs and avoidance of demand
peaks through the management of loads. At the same time, you also
improve your power system’s availability.

The SIMATIC powercontrol power
management software refl ects your
perspective by tracking power fl ow
from the infeed to the distribution
down to the consumers. The overall
objective is to manage the operation
of your equipment as cost-effectively
as possible.

To accomplish this, all power-rele-
vant data are continuously recorded
and centrally evaluated. This ensures
maximum transparency as evaluation
of the data provides information on
the power fl ow and clarifi es the cor-
relation between processes and their
consumption. In addition, the reliabil-
ity of your power supply is improved
as possible anomalies are diagnosed
faster and in more detail – these can
therefore be rectifi ed in a targeted
manner.

Moreover, this does not only
apply to electrical power –
SIMATIC powercontrol also
facilitates the visualization of
other energy types, such as
water, gas and compressed air.

Power distribution, updated values
and consumption curves at a glance

The transparency of your power system forms the basis for any type
of energy optimization. This can be achieved, easily and reliably with
the comprehensive functions of SIMATIC powercontrol.

Improved information: Online
representation of measured
values and power distribution
system status

Knowledge about what is going on in
your power distribution system is a
requirement comprehensively fulfi lled
by SIMATIC powercontrol. On the one
hand, you can have all measured val-
ues of your power distribution system
displayed online on your monitor. It
does not matter whether you are
dealing with electrical values or other
types of utilites. Which values you
choose to display are up to you. On
the other hand, the graphical single-
line representation offers the possi-
bility of monitoring the states of your
circuit breakers at a glance – via vari-
ous monitoring stations. Abnormali-
ties down to fault conditions can thus
be detected earlier to improve the
availability of your systems.

Fast troubleshooting:
Event logging of current alarm
conditions in the system

Everything under control – this is the
motto of SIMATIC powercontrol. Every
important event can immediately be
displayed via the message list, irre-
spective of which part of the system
is currently shown on the monitor.
The category of the respective event
as well as the displayed message text
is specifi ed by you during confi gu-
ration, as is the question whether
a message has to be acknowledged
when it occurs. Default text as well
as the three standard message cat-
egories “warning”, “information” and
“alarm” ease confi guration. Of course,
information such as date/time and
the various message information, e.g.
location, gear, devices or function,
are included in the message list. Com-
prehensive fi lter mechanisms support
the targeted search for messages.

Targeted optimization:
Graphical comparison options
for logged values

Measured values cannot only be dis-
played online, but also regularly stored
as demand values. SIMATIC powercon-
trol software offers various intervals
for calculating demand. For electrical
power parameters, demand values of
15 min. intervals are standard. The kW
demand values, with maximum limits,
often make up a critical portion of
power contracts with utilities. In the
trend representation, SIMATIC power-
control offers the possibility of display-
ing the power demand values, com-
paring them over specifi ed periods and
normalizing them to specifi c sales –
all of which are essential to targeted
optimization measures. Of course,
the displayed trend curves can also be
printed. The sequence of all switching
operations for the project can be de-
picted as digital traces – a further step
towards the complete transparency of
your entire power distribution system.

Thorough analysis:
Standardized evaluation and
export of archived energy data

On the one hand, transparency is
achieved by displaying all relevant
power distribution system data and,
on the other hand, by a standardized
evaluation of available data. To
identify possible savings potential,
SIMATIC powercontrol offers com-
monly required analysis in the form
of standard report templates.

Cost allocation by actual energy usage:
with the SIMATIC powercost module

Reduced time, increased reli-
ability: Cost allocation by actual
consumption

The modelling of a company’s cost
center structure forms the basis of
any cost and energy allocation sys-
tem. To accomplish this, SIMATIC
powercost comes with a confi gu-
ration interface, on which all cost
centers can be confi gured reliably
and intuitively via drag and drop,
and which allows for the measuring
points to be allocated to their respec-
tive cost centers. The cost centers
can also be assigned a percentage
of a measuring point or via formulas
from multiple measuring points, in a
“virtual” measuring point.

Reliable reports on energy consump-
tion are only possible when all types
of utilities and all consumers can be
recorded. Which includes consumers
that do not have a communication
capable meter. This is comprehen-
sively addressed by SIMATIC power-
cost, which allows for the allocation
of all types of utilities to cost centers
and even supports the use of manual
measuring points whose values can

be entered manually into the system
for meters that can only be read man-
ually.

Improved effi ciency: Flexible and
transparent cost determination

In addition to the pure energy con-
sumption, the resulting costs are vital-
ly important. SIMATIC powercost facil-
itates fl exible specifi cation of tariffs,
i.e. costs per energy consumption, in
the form of cyclic tariff models as well
as the input of special tariffs for limit-
ed periods. Fixed costs, e.g. revenue
meter rental, as well as percentage-
based surcharges, e.g. taxes, can be
allocated to each cost center.

Intuitive data presentation: Easy
and open presentation of results

On the basis of the defi ned costs and
tariff structure SIMATIC powercost
calculates the total consumption dur-
ing runtime for any given period, as
well as the resulting costs of the cost
centers. This data can be printed out
periodically, as needed, in the form of
reports or exported to other systems
for further processing.

The automatic allocation of energy consumption and costs to individ-
ual business units and departments based on actual usage ensures
a transparent understanding of energy usage. At the same time,
it also serves as the basis for benchmarking the success of energy
conservation measures. The intuitive engineering tools and high
fl exibility of SIMATIC powercost (the cost-center allocation module
of SIMATIC powercontrol) offers you all of these possibilities.

Fast and easy engineering:
parameterizing instead of programming

Even in its programming/engineering
environment, SIMATIC powercontrol
follows these principles. Implement
resources more effi ciently and guar-
antee the highest reliabillity. For this
purpose, the program is designed as
a pre-programmed and system-tested
solution, with a runtime software that
is combined with the advantages of
the open SIMATIC world.

Effortless confi guration

The runtime software, already pro-
grammed and tested for the standard-
ized power management functions,
can be effortlessly confi gured for a
customer system via parameterization
windows requiring only a few user
settings. For larger systems, a very
effective bulk entry function virtually
excludes setting errors.

Effi cient operating and
monitoring

An equal amount of effi ciency was
designed into the operating and
monitoring features. The SIMATIC
powercontrol library offers elements
for displaying realtime data and
specially designed windows for the
analysis of archived values. An opti-
mum and transparent representation
of the data can thus be created with
only few clicks.

Easy documentation

The required paper documentation
can also be produced easily and effi -
ciently. The company business units
and departments can be fl exibly
mapped to the company’s cost cen-
ters, including the hierarchies within
the company. The data are output in
the form of a pre-formatted, standard-
ized report.

What about specifi c
requirements?

Specifi c requirements are incorporat-
ed in the known fl exibility of SIMATIC
and SIMATIC WinCC. Add-on packages
can gain access the available realtime
or archived data for further process-
ing, via standard interfaces.
