Cover letter - Targeted
Dear xxxxx -
If possible always address your letter to a named person
As a heading, state the job reference number, if provided
State the role you wish to apply for and reference number if it has been provided
I would like to apply
for the position of “xxxxx”, which was advertised on xxxxx under reference
xxxxx.
Begin your letter with a suitable opening that shows motivation
Having worked on a XXXX vessel during my training, I have a detailed understanding of the
importance of XXXX;
For the above, three paragraphs should be enough, give useful detail about
relevant things such as specific cargo operations you have been involved
in/passenger aspects/navigational issues or engineering challenges you
encountered
Show your interest in the company, by highlighting some specifics about it that
you have identified from their website, and what you can bring to the job
Highlight relevant skills, additional qualifications/certificates, eg your tanker training
certificates/crowd control training etc
I am keen to put these skills into practice, and to take on the responsibility of a junior officer role.
Emphasise willingness to learn
Ability to work as a team etc
The final paragraph should highlight your availability for attending an interview and
thank the reader for considering your application
– it's nice to be polite.
You will be pleased to know that I am also a self starter who needs minimal supervision in my
work. A highly motivated individual who excels under pressure. I am available for interview with
the view to an immediate start.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my application, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely (If you have the name of the person)
Yours faithfully (if you do not have the name of the person)
