Confirmation Testing
Patient position:
Sitting or supine, with the forearm in slightly
less than full supination, and the wrist in the
neutral position. Stabilize the
metacarpophalangeal joint. The proximal
interphalangeal joint should be flexed and the
distal interphalangeal joint extended for each
of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th digits. Test each
finger individually.
Examiner pressure:
Against the palmar surface of the middle
phalanx in the direction of extension. Note
that isolated flexor digitorum superficialis
function of the 5th finger is often difficult to
obtain.
