ACTIVATED CARBON
WHAT IS ACTIVATED CARBON?
Activated carbon:
Is a form of carbon processed to have small, low-
volume pores that increase the surface area
available for adsorption
The surface of activated carbon can achieve 1500
square meters per gram.
THE PORE SIZE
•
There are three groups of pores:
- Macropores (> 50 nm diameter)
- Mesopores (2-50 nm diameter)
- Micropores (< 2 nm diameter)
THE PORE SIZE
•
The pore size
distribution is highly
important for the
practical application.
PRODUCTION
Activated carbon is a material that is produced from
carbonaceous source materials, such as:
•
coal
•
coconuts
•
nutshells
•
peat
•
wood
CONTAMINATION
•
Contamination of soil, groundwater and surface
water is caused by pouring industrial and municipal
wastewater. The development of industry makes
produced increasing amounts of impurities.
CONTAMINATION
•
It has been found that, in the drinking water contains over
1500 different compounds include: dyes, ethers, amines
and pesticides.
•
Even very small amounts can couse tint of water, reduce
the light transmission, inhibit photosynthesis and also
weakens the self-cleaning process.
WHERE WE CAN USE IT?
•
In air filters in the home
•
Air purification
•
Odor removal
•
In water treatment (also in
the home water filters)
•
Volatile organic compounds
capture from painting, dry
cleaning and other
processes
Activated carbon is usually used in water filtration systems.
WHERE WE CAN USE IT?
•
in medicine (medical
charcoal, coal medical)
for the treatment of
indigestion and to
remove bacteria and
toxins from the food
poisoning
•
in the chemical industry
as a catalyst, and a solid
support for other catalysts
WHERE WE CAN USE IT?
•
in electrical engineering (electronics) as the
material, to achieve the great capacity
•
in aquariums as a filter
that absorbs harmful
chemicals
ADVANTAGES
Strongly developed surface area
Easy degradation of waste material
High mechanical strength
Preferred pore size
Relatively cheap
Easily accessible
Low costs of production
Rich resource base
Methylene blue + WD-extra
