Subject: Steer Position Potentiometer
If the steer position potentiometer shaft becomes loose in the flexible coupler, the steer position indicator
will not work or calibrate properly. If this happens the motors and/or amplifiers can overheat during
straight travel. Fault Code 09 could indicate a loose steer potentiometer.
Perform the following procedure on any E30-50FR lift trucks if this is suspected.
1. Disconnect the battery and discharge the capacitor bank.
Note: Discharge the capacitor bank by turning the key on after disconnecting the battery. The
display will come on and then go out, indicating the capacitor bank is discharged.
2. Remove the top cover.
3. Unplug the steer position potentiometer from the main harness and loosen the set screw on the
lower ring of the flexible coupler. Leave the steer fork insert in place.
4. Remove the steer pot mount bracket (along with the potentiometer and flexible coupler) by remov-
ing the hex screws, flat washers, and interlocking fasteners.
5. Remove the flexible coupler from the potentiometer shaft and reinstall it as follows:
a. Apply LocTite®680 to the potentiometer shaft. Do not allow Loc Tite® to contact the threaded
shaft of the potentiometer, see figure 2.
b. Slide the flexible coupler onto the potentiometer shaft with a twisting motion.
The flexible coupler should be placed as shown in figure l.

c. Apply LocTite®680 to the coupler set screw and tighten.
d. Set the assembly aside and allow to dry for at least 15 minutes.
e. If possible, do not install the steer potentiometer on the truck for another 12
hours to allow full cure of the Loc Tite®.
6. Do not remove the steer fork insert from the steer fork when performmg this procedure,
however, if the insert is loose, remove it, clean the threads, apply Loc Tite®242 to the
threads, reinstall it, and torque to 11 ft-lb. Install the steer position potentiometer
assembly as follows:
a. Ensure the potentiometer is tight on the bracket.
b. Place the bracket m the correct location and slide the flexible coupler over the
steer fork insert.
c. Secure the potentiometer mount bracket with the interlocking fasteners, flat
washers, and hex screws.
d. Apply LocTite®242 to the set screw on the lower ring of the flexible coupler
and tighten.
7. Perform the Steer Potentiometer Adjustment procedure followed by the Steer Pot
Calibration procedure as described in the Service Manual.
8. Install the top cover, connect the battery and test the truck for proper operation.
