Seid (staronordyckie seiðr) to forma szamanizmu, (a nie magii) uprawiana przez przedchrześcijańskich wikingów. Termin ten odnosi się również do nowożytnych rekonstrukcji i kopii tych praktyk. Seid, czyli norrøn sjamanisme, powiązane było z podróżami astralnymi, transem szamańskim, leczeniem, zielarstwem, używaniem run, śpiewaniem gardłowym run, bębnieniem szamańskim, tańcem itp. Jak w większości przypadków tak i tutaj ważnym elementem był rytm.

Praktykującymi magię seid były głównie kobiety (seiðkonur). Bogowie, na czele z Freją również uprawiali seid. Jedynym mężczyzną-bogiem zajmującym się seid był Odyn. Z seidr miała związek żona Odyna - Frigg Wszystkowiedząca. Za przykład odmiany seidr - spae mogą posłużyć wikińskie Norny. Seidkone u wikingów była uważana za świętą.

Podczas seansu seiðkone (kobieta seid, żona seid) wchodziła w pewien rodzaj transu, podczas którego doświadczały uczucia "odcieleśnienia", i/lub "pożyczania" ciała, podróży przez czas i przestrzeń do innych światów (por. płaszcz bogini Freyji z ptasich piór, oraz koń Odyna - ośmionogi Sleipnir - jako archetypy sposobów podróży astralnych) itp. Odmianą seid jest galdr, czyli inkantowanie run i pieśni mających wprowadzać w stan transu, jednak galdr ma znaczenie również mnemotechniczne. Galdr było raczej domeną mężczyzn, tak jak seid - kobiet. Kobiety seid (seidkonur) dzielą się na kilka grup. Najważniejszymi są: seidr-kone, spae-kone, volva. Podczas gdy volva zajmowała się sztuką pod względem dywinacyjnym, seidr-kone zajmowała się w sensie szamańskim (Zmieniam rzeczywistość poprzez sen). Seidr-kone nie używała raczej run w aspekcie profetycznym, ale by zmieniać rzeczywistość. W tym samym celu używane były węzły i nici. Atrybutem typowej volvy była różdżka (udowodnione archeologicznie), podczas gdy typowa seidr-kone obywała się bez różdżki, a nawet bez jakiegokolwiek rytuału magicznego. Spae rytuału najczęściej wymagało, czyste pierwotne seidr - nie (seidkone to NIE kapłanka i NIE czarownica). Seidr wytworzyło wiele odmian, jednak samo w sobie pozostało szamańskie, z szamańskimi zadaniami i praktykami.

Śpiew, zawodzenie seidr (najczęściej: śpiewanie run) może mieć swoje odniesienie w śpiewie joik Saamów i do ich Noaidevuohta. Zasięg seidr obejmował Skandynawię oraz Islandię.

There is a growing interest in recreating the ancient oracular or 'shamanistic' techniques that are commonly referred to by Asatruar as seithr andspae-craft. The word "seidr" is spelled with a letter from the Old Norse or Icelandic alphabet called "eth". Since "eth" has a phonetic value somewhere between "d" and "th", seithr is variously spelled in English as "seid", "seidh", "seidr", "seidhr", "seith", or "seithr". "For a man to take a female role, especially in a sexual relationship, was socially unacceptable to the Vikings....In the passage describing Odin's magic, Snorri uses a specific term, "ergi" to indicate the shamefulness of seidh magic. Where does a Seithman go? "  It comes up periodically: "Where does a sei<eth>man go when he dreams?" It's an question with a lot of bad answers. The answer really depends on who you're talking to. If you talk to a person with a Psych. 101 background, he says "Into the recesses of the mind." Another versed in the New Age says "Into the Land of Dreams" ("Oh, boy," says the Seithman as he rolls his eyes.) The ever-wise skeptic will say "No place. You're hallucinatin', bud!" Yep, everybody's got an answer, and only about 2-5% have got a clue.
       There's a variety of things that happen to seith folk when they're seething. Well now, there's a term that might require some explanation: seething. Seething is a thing that happens to us. It is like the point where you drop off to sleep. The eyes roll upwards, the body releases, there is a coolness or heat, and a hot chill up the spine knocking the joints apart. It is a flow of power out of the depths of Hvergelmir. It is the only luck we have, and it happens to us. It comes unbidden. It is a falling and flying at the same time like when der Glückspilz washes over us. It is like the icy waters which forever boil up out of the original Well, and, at the same time, the warm summer rains which wash back down to the Land of the Ancestors.
    Seething comes from outside, a wind blowing into us.
    Seething washes our soul out through a hole in the back of our neck.
    Seething shakes out our spine like a dusty rug.

Interview with Edred Thorsson on Seith and Chaos Magic - "What is Seidhr and how is it connected to the idea of Chaos? Now it is generally imagined that Seidhr is a kind of evil magic practiced by Norse shamans -- especially female ones. Indeed, Seidhr is an ancient form of magic practiced by the Scandinavian peoples at least since the Viking Age. Seidhr is generally connected with the Gods and Goddesses, called the Vanir, and especially with Freyja, whose name is really the title "Lady". Seidhr is also generally contrasted with another word for "magic" in the Northern tongue: Galdr. Seidhr is connected to the concept of "Chaos" in the sense that the theory upon which Seidhr works is very similar to that upon which Chaos Magic works. Both are based on a materialistic paradigm -- what Peter Carroll calls "Ether" and the ancient Germanic peoples called Ginnung, or Chaos. This paradigm is, by the way, to be contrasted with the essentially symbolic theory underlying Galdr -- a theory which is semiotic and linguistic in character, not substance-based. The underlying theory of Seidhr is pretty much the same as "the magical paradigm" described by Carroll in his Liber Kaos. However, that general theory does not account for Galdr, which is independent of the flows of the time/space continuum..." More

Ground Rules for Journeying, by Ragnheid, Storyteller and Bard (Jenny Blain)
"1. Be aware of what is around. Look before leaping. Don't rush into situations.
2. Speak to those that you meet. Always be polite and courteous. Be truthful when they ask you questions
3. If a creature asks to come with you, accept their company or help. (Caveat below -- if they put conditions on their help, be wary!)
4. If some creature or person asks for help, give it. If the help is beyond your means, explain this -- the creature may tell you how to fulfill it. Your ally may assist you, if you ask. The help may be needed within the journey, or in ordinary reality.
5. If you make a promise, keep it. This is regardless of whether it refers to actions within the journey, or those you should complete in ordinary reality.
6. If some creature or person asks you to share food, share it.
7. If a creature you've helped gives you a token, poem, or anything else, keep it. It will later be useful.
8. If you undertake a task, do it to the best of your ability.
9. If you cannot do a task, ask your ally or those with you.
10. If you want to go home (return to a safe place in the journey, or wake to ordinary reality), say so..."

Imbas Forosna - "Imbas Forosna is knowledge that illuminates, and while the mechanics of the practice are in doubt historically it is recorded as a form of prophesy or enlightenment.  My own reading of the commentaries on this subject have left me convinced that it's origins are most probably a form of seidhr (it's believe to have come from England or Norway) especially since in it's earliest forms it was practiced almost exclusively by woman. More

An Alternative Spæ Rite - by Swain Wodening of Angelseaxise Ealdriht : "Spæ is most often mistakenly called seidr in modern Asatru. The reason for this confusion is due to the use of the word seidr in Erik the Red's Saga, the only good secondary source of a spæcræft ritual.  The word spæ its self means literally "spying" but in the sense of "seeing with secondsight."  Its relationship to Old Norse speja is roughly as to seer is to "to see."  Both are related to Old English spyrian" to investigate." Its primary characteristic was the active obtaining of information, knowledge, and wisdom whether about the past, present, or possible future. Spæcræft was a part of seidr, but not all spæcræft was seidr or vice versa. Beginning Trance Work for Spæ and Seidhr by Swain Wodening of Angelseaxise Ealdriht : "In order to be able to perform spæ, one must be able to go into trance. This is true regardless of whether one uses the method of spirit travel made popular by Hrafnr, or whether one is using the method of inviting wights to them. In order to perform trance work, one must first learn basic meditation techniques as covered in the articles on Breathing, and Beginning Meditation. Once these are mastered, one is ready to begin trance work in earnest. The best form of meditative technique is empty mind meditation. Blaine, Jenny: Nine Worlds of Seid-Magic: Ecstasy and Neo-Shamanism in North European Paganism, Routledge, 2001: ISBN: 0415256518. A case-study of Northern European shamanistic practice, or seidr, explores the way in which the ancient Norse belief systems evoked in the Icelandic Sagas and Eddas have been rediscovered and reinvented by groups in Europe and North America. Recommended.

Fries, Jan: Seidways: Shaking, Swaying and Serpent Mysteries, Mandrake, 1996, ISBN=1869928369. Despite the title there are only a couple of chapters remotely pertaining to seidr. The book provides a survey of the manifestation of magical trance and possession techniques through several magical traditions - shamanisn, mesmerism, draconian cults and the nightside of European paganism.. The book was written before Seid became well-known and was publiished earlier under a different title.

 

 Chisholm, James and Flowers, Stephen E.: A Source-Book of Seid . For years only available to members of the Rune-Gild, this volume is now generally available. This work contains every major reference to the practice of seiÿ in Old Norse literature, as well as references to it from Latin and Arabic sources. The Source Book contains original texts and translations. Never have all of the sources for the practice of this kind of magic been gathered in an easily accessible form. Seid is the source of continuing fascination. For anyone really interested in this area of study it is necessary to read and and study this book. Available from Runa-Raven Press.

Thorrsson, Edred: Witchdom of the True: A Study of the Vana-Troth and the Practice of Seidr . This is the long-awaited and much anticipated study of the history, lore, religion and magic of the Vanir branch of the Germanic way. Its contents will prove of extreme interest to those of the Wiccan path or modem witchcraft, for it is in the way of the Vanir, or Wanes, that their roots are to be found. Seidr Magic

         Seidr is a type of spirit magic practiced among the Vinlanders, originally borrowed by the Norse from their Lapp neighbors many centuries ago. It is sometimes known as "platform magic" for how certain major rituals are cast, where the sorcerer rests in a trance a raised platform. Among the Vinlanders, its practice is restricted to women (at least publically). Male sorcerers are viewed as effeminate, deceitful, and worse. In the sagas, every male sorcerer meets with a miserable and shameful death, though many cast powerful curses as they die.

         Female practitioners -- known as gydja (priestess) and sometimes volva (prophetess) -- are more tolerated, although still not common. They rarely engage in full platform magic, at least not publicly. More often, they will go into trances by singing to prophesy, bestow blessings, and act as seers. They may also direct sacrifices to appease dangerous spirits, usually on autumn "winter nights". A young woman will generally learn her craft from an elder female relative. The degree of dedication varies, ranging from religious devotion to a hobby craft. A dedicated gydja (priestess) will generally be rewarded by gifts in return for prophecy and aid. She will act as a priestess of Freyja, the goddess of passionate love -- who is associated with the Virgin Mary in semi-Christianized Vinland.

         Men are never publically workers of seidhr craft. They would draw inspiration from both Freyja and Odin Val-father (Slain-Father), lord of madness (including poetic inspiration, berserk fury and panic). While acknowledged as an aspect of the Father, Odin is distrusted by Vinlanders. Prayers are instead directed to Thor, Jesus, or Freyr. A male practitioner is rumored to turn into a woman once every eight days, because Freyja would not give her gifts to someone who was always a man. Even Odin had had to take on women's form in order to learn shamanic magic.


Awakening

         A woman is initiated into seidhr by a journey to the spirit world, an alternate world to the material one. Places in it reflect major features and events in the material world, but it is also a distinct other land with its own inhabitants and geography. On the spirit world, all creatures speak a universal language which can be mutually understood. Its geography is mysterious and complex, being easy to get lost in but possible to find your way almost anywhere. While it is similar to the material world, events in the spirit world have only symbolic or distant meaning for material events. It is a source for prophecy and omens, but not of material facts.

         The journey to the spirit world may take several hours, and the elder practitioner guides the beginner in meditating and singing. Together they fall into a trance and find themselves in the spirit world. The first trip into the spirit world awakens a special spirit called a "fylgia" in Norse ("fetch" is an English translation). The fylgia is said by some to be the other half of the character's soul, the spirit world parallel of the material person. After the first journey, the character will have the indirect aid and guidance of this spirit. The fylgia cannot speak to her in the physical world, but it has an empathic link to her and will grant her certain benefits depending upon its type (cf. the Spirit List for descriptions).

         A woman who has gone through this will have a reputation as a "wise woman" and may lead sacrifices for her family. She may also have simple charms which she is capable of, for healing, midwifery, and other simple duties. She cannot journey to the spirit world safely without guidance, but she may do it safely with an elder or may attempt it on her own under dire circumstances. However, she does have second sight. She can automatically see corporeal spirits for what they are, and see through illusions or other magic.

         To represent the awakening of the fylgia, a character must have a POW of at least 11 and a Discorporate skill of at least 25. She should select a spirit from the Spirit List as this fylgia. She gains the benefits of the totem's favor, so long as she acts in accordance with its wishes. Also, she may roll on her Discorporate skill to sense feelings from her totem spirit about events in the spirit world, but these are vague. Most importantly, she gains second sight, allowing


Gydja

         A more dedicated practitioner will make frequent trips into the spirit world, and learn the true craft of spirits. She will be known as a gydja (priestess) and possibly a volva (prophetess). The gydja travels to the spirit world by quiet meditation, which may be aided by another woman singing special songs but can with difficulty be done alone. Travel to the spirit world is physically strenuous: the gydja will visibly sweat and tremble as she attempts it. Once in the trance, each hour of travel is the equivalent of perhaps 4 hours without sleep. Once she succeeds, her spirit enters the other world and her body collapses, occaisionally twitching.

         This travel can be the vehicle for prophecy -- asking powerful spirits about what the future will be. Many Nordic spirits are commonly willing to tell the future for a simple price. However, often such foretellings are as much of a burden as they are a blessing, so it is uncommon for gydja to avail themselves of this.

         By such travel, the gydja is also capable of major spells or sendings. To cast these, the gydja mounts a raised platform and falls into a trance, possibly aided by a circle of singers round about the platform. She is recalled from the trance, aided by the single song of a special singer. While in the trance the sorcerer's soul is freed and either goes to seek information about the future, or perhaps goes to attack the object of the ceremony, whose mind and body can be enfeebled and killed. The attack can take a number of forms but always has some visible manifestation.

         A dedicated gydja (priestess) will generally be rewarded by gifts in return for prophecy and magical aid. Relatives and neighbors will come to consult with her on troubling matters, bringing appropriate gifts if they want to stay in her graces. She may act as a priestess of Freyja, the goddess of passionate love, who is associated with the Virgin Mary in semi-Christianized Vinland. This mainly implies leading some family ceremonies for birth, marriage, and seasonal events.

         In many cases, a priestess is not expected to bear the normal duties of marriage. While she certainly may marry, she may instead live by the rewards of those who benefit from her craft. If so, she has a position of power, but it depends upon the accuracy of her prophecy and advice. It does not, however, require celibacy. Celibacy is not seen as a sign of holiness in either the official priests (godi) or the family priestesses (gydja) of semi-Christianized Vinland. A priest will generally marry as usual. A priestess may marry, or may simply have a series of affairs.
