THE TAJ MAHAL, AGRA, INDIA |
|
At Agra in northern India stands the Taj Mahal, which is often called the most beautiful building in the world. It was built by the Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan (born 1587) as a tomb for his wife, who died in 1631. She was called Mumtaz Mahal, which means `chosen one of the palace'. They were married in 1612. Shah Jahan was also buried there after his death in 1666. It was designed by architects from India, Iran, and Central Asia. The chief architect was called Ustad Isa. He was born either in Iran or Turkey. The buildings were commenced in 1632, and more than 20,000 workmen were employed. The tomb, which is made of white marble, was completed in 1643. The other buildings were finished in 1649. |
