Teaching pronunciation
by Iwona Bakinowska
Level: elementary
Age: 9
Aims: to teach pronounce two sounds: /i:/ and /I/.
Objective: teaching the difference between /i:/ and /I/
Materials: CD player, CD, photocopy of handouts, board, chalk.
1. Teacher presents a rhyme and asks Students what is it about?
“There was a little guinea pig,
Who, being little, was not big;
He always walked upon his feet,
And never fasted when he eat”.
Teacher explains new words if Ss don't understand.
2. Teacher asks children to repeat the rhyme after him. Then asks Ss what are the rhymes?
Ss answer: pig - big; feet - eat.
T. puts two symbols on the board: /i:/ and /I/;
T. presents the sounds and explains that /i:/ sounds like a smile and it is very long and second sound /I/ sounds similar when we lift up a very heavy object: Ehh!
T. asks Ss to repeat sound after her (choral) and try to simulate her.
T. asks Ss to repeat sounds in words: pig, big, feet, eat individually.
3. T. gives Ss a handout and asks them to read words silently. When they are ready T. plays tape and asks them to mach the words to the symbols. T. draw similar shapes on the board so when Ss have finished they write word on the board together with T.
4. T. teach Ss the rhyme by saying it in different rhythms. Ss repeat until they feel comfortable. T. ask volunteer to perform in front of the class.
