Reading
A City Reborn Liverpool used to be one of the most important seaports in the world. In the 1960s, changes in the industry and changes in the British economy left the port and the city in a decline. For a time the city was famous for its unemployment and crime. Buildings fell into ruin and thousands of people left the city to find work in other parts of Britain. Nowadays, Liverpool is once again becoming a centre for artists and musicians, as it was in the days of The Beatles. It is a European City of Culture and a huge rebuilding programme is bringing new life into the city centre. Visitors come from all over the world to enjoy the city's history, museums, art galleries and of course, popular music. Liverpool, one of the great cities of the nineteenth century is looking forward to becoming one of the great cities of the twenty first. |
