A great number of bank robberies take place in New York and the police are now working closely with banks to try and solve the problem.
It's pretty easy to rob a bank in New York City these days. Bank robberies have become so common that many robbers don't even need a gun. One man used a pencil to rob a bank, whereas another simply handed over a piece of paper on which he had written a note demanding money.
The situation is not totally new. New York has been the bank robbery capital of the world for decades. In the 1980s there were more than a thousand bank robberies a year, whereas in 2003 almost one out of every three banks in the city was successfully robbed. Police claim that the reason behind the rise in bank robberies is poor security. Banks, however, claim that security costs them a lot of money.
In recent months, the police have worked closely with banks to come up with new and more effective ways to target the problem, such as better-maintained security cameras, walls or glass to prevent bullets coming through, and dye packs. Dye packs are used by banks to stop robbers without using violence. Bank personnel put the dye into the bags of cash which later explodes. The coloured ink permanently stains the robber's hands as well as the stolen money.
