Letter of complaint 1

John Hunter, 43 Railway Road, Birmingham, decided to buy a pair of jeans from a mail-order catalogue. The company Superb Jeans, 10 Green Street, London W357, advertised their product in the following way:

We are the only company in this country licensed to sell this top brand!

The jeans were delivered quickly but John is not satisfied with them. You are John, write a letter of complaint to the manager of Superb Jeans discussing at least four problems with the trousers. Indicate what you expect them to do.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about the jeans which I ordered from your catalogue. They arrived quickly but I was very disappointed with what I received.

To begin with, I ordered blue jeans but unfortunately you sent me a black pair. I also noticed that a wrong size was sent.

My next complaint is about the quality. In your advertisement, you said it was excellent but I was really surprised to find that the zip was broken.

While we are on the subject of advertising, I discovered that a free T-shirt I expected to get, was missing.

To sum up, I would like toget a refund or another pair of jeans.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully

John Hunter

Peter Sheffield, 64 Main Street, Bournemouth, went on a Club 20-30 holiday but did not enjoy himself very much. He was not satisfied with the place he stayed at, he did not like the company of old pensioners and was treated badly by the agency representative. On his return Peter wrote a letter of complaint to the managing director of Club 20-30 Holidays, 27 Long Road, London S842. In the letter he described his problems and asked for compensation.

Imagine you are Peter and write the letter.

Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing to complain about a Club 20-30 holiday I went on at the resort of Malifoo between 14th and 28th April.

According to your brochure, accommodation was supposed to be in a small villa. However, I was taken to a modern hotel far from the sea. Even though it had just been built, there were cracks everywhere and it looked as if it was going to collapse. The walls were paper thin and you could hear everything from the other rooms.

To make matters worse, there were only two, except for me, young people in the hotel and they were both men. The hotel had been taken over by a package tour of old age pensioners who insisted on playing bingo in the discotheque every evening. There was no nightlife I had been promised.

On top of everything, when I mentioned my complaints to your agency representative, she was extremely rude to me. At the end of my stay, she even became abusive when I refused to give her a tip.

You can imagine how upset I am at having spent a lot of money on this holiday. In fact, I expect a full refund as compensation for the inconvenience and discomfort I experienced. I hope you will give this matter your immediate attention.

I look forward to receiving your reply by return of post.

Yours faithfully

Peter Sheffield

You bought a GPS pack ( Global Positioning System ) from the Electronic Devices shop in Oxford Street. At first the system worked properly, yet after two weeks some problems started and you could not use it. You wanted to exchange the GPS in the shop but the staff turned out to be unhelpful and even rude.

You were very disappointed with the service and now you are writing a letter of complaint, to Electronic Devices Company, describing the case and asking to give this matter their immediate attention.

Dear Sir or Madam

I feel I must complain to you about the service I have received from both your shop assistants and your office staff.

I bought a GPS pack from your Oxford Street branch on 17 September last. It cost £98.50, which I do not think is cheap. For a GPS set at this price, one would expect it to last several years.

However, after only two weeks I had to have it repaired because I could not set the destination. Not only that, but in the next two days the system could not generate and transmit any signal.

Naturally I took it back to the shop. There I was told that I could have another GPS pack, but that particular model was out of stock. I said that I did not want to choose another model, and that I wanted my money back. The shop assistant informed me that she could not do this, and that if I wanted a refund I had to write to your office. Since then I have written to you twice, and I have tried to phone on several occasions, but I have had no reply.

I hope this time, you will give this matter your immediate attention. If I do not hear from you in the next two weeks, I will get in touch with the Consumer Advice Bureau. This organisation often prosecutes shops that sell faulty goods.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,
