A deck of cards is thoroughly and genuinely shuffled and
SHUFFLED OVERHAND so the spectators can see the fronts of
the cards TOO. The performer, after the shuffle, writes a
prediction on a piece of paper (Say he writes "You will take the
Queen of Spades") He allows someone to hold this paper. A
spectator now cuts the deck ANYWHERE HE WISHES, The
card at the cut is looked at by HIM alone.

The performer now divides the deck in 2 sections, one section
goes in his pocket, the other in the spectator's pocket. Each man
now takes out one card from his pocket. The rest of the cards are
placed together. The performer states that he is really
demonstrating how easy it is to do a miracle in front of their eyes
when he has the knowledge, and how futile it is for the outside or
layman to attempt the same thing. He asks the spectator to think
of his card and turn over and look at the card he took from his
pocket. He is asked if that is the card he cut at. The answer will
be NO. The performer now demands the name of the card and on
turning over the one HE TOOK FROM HIS POCKET it is the
very same card.

AND THE PREDICTION PAPER STATES THE NAME OF
THAT CARD.
AND THE DECK IS ORDINARY AND MAY BE
EXAMINED,
AND YOU SHUFFLED IT GENUINELY
AND HE CUT WHEREVER HE WANTED
AND THERE ARE NO CONFEDERATES.

Well if we gave you an easy method, would you DO IT?.... or
would you just read it and pass it up?

No sleights. We have a regular svengali deck. In this deck there
are 26 different cards, besides the forcing card which we will
assume is the Queen of Spades. Take these 26 cards, (the
different ones) and in your left hand coat pocket, you put 26
more cards of the same back design, so that when these 26 in the
deck and the 26 in your pocket are put together, they will make a
full deck. On the TOP of the 26 cards in your pocket, place the

QUEEN OF SPADES. Have these 26 cards VERTICAL in the
pocket. Now the regular svengali deck and we're ready.

1st: Write your prediction "You will take the Queen of Spades"
on a piece of paper and fold it, and give it to someone to hold.
Next HOLD THE SVENGALI DECK WITH FACES TO
AUDlENCE SO THEY CAN SEE THEM AND GENUINELY
SHUFFLE THEM OVERHAND. This secret alone is in my lists
for $1.00 and has been for five years. In this manner you can
show them the deck is ordinary without calling attention to it,
and ESPECIALLY MAGICIANS, if they do not know this
principle.

Now hold the deck by the sides and have them cut it lengthways.
When they cut, take the portion they cut off, in your right hand,
and you can tell easily by looking at the top card of the lower
heap whether it is a force card or not (The force cards will be cut
at the ends) If it ISN'T, then look at the under card of the top
portion in right hand and that will be a Queen....

(Note: This genuine shuffle of a svengali deck is bound to mix up
a few of the cards, but I have never yet failed to have a spectator
cut at a forced card. FOR THE SIMPLE REASON THAT THEY
WILL CUT A LONG CARD.)

So push out either the top card of the lower portion, or the
bottom card of the top portion (whichever the force card is) to
spectator and he looks at it, The card is now replaced and deck
squared up.

Next proceed to deal out the deck in two piles and as you do so
give YOURSELF all the force cards and the spectator ALL THE
OTHERS. You may have to give yourself two cards at a time,
once in a while, but you talk saying, I'll mix these up carefully,
or I'll mix them up any old way.... here; I don't have to take one
card at a time. I'll take two.... I'll give YOU two.... I want you to
feel, my friends, that everything is done aboveboard.... Now, you
continue, "Neither of us knows which pile your card is, let's put
each pile in our pockets. I'll put one in my pocket and you put
one in yours. Fine. Now I'll show you how hard tricks are. I'm
going to ask you to reach in your pocket and take out a card. So
will I." (and you both do so).... you then take out the OTHER 26
cards rather the other 25 cards as you have taken the QUEEN
OFF THE TOP AND BROUGHT IT OUT ON TABLE FACE
DOWN.... "let's lay the rest of the cards together here.... (and you
put his cards and your cards together after he takes out his 25
cards too).... then you finish the trick exactly as explained in the

A Good Coin Vanish

(and easy too)

I better not tell you this is good. Suppose you try it for yourself....
the misdirection is perfect.... your own coin or a borrowed coin,
is placed under a handkerchief and completely vanishes.... both
hands being shown absolutely empty, and of course the
handkerchief is ordinary, being borrowed, also, if you desire.

Have the coin, preferable a quarter or half dollar, in left hand
being held between finger tips.... next place the handkerchief
over the left hand (and coin, too, of course) and as the right hand
goes underneath, the coin is clipped away from the left fingers
between the tips of the third and second fingers of the right
hand.... this is done in an instant while apparently straightening
out the handkerchief from underneath.

The right hand now is drawn under the handkerchief and against
it too.... toward the corner that is nearest your body and the both
hands must be in such a position that when this right hand is
drawn outward under the handkerchief that when the RIGHT
FINGERS GRASP THE CORNER OF THE HANDKERCHIEF
THE RIGHT THIRD AND SECOND FINGERS SHOULD BE
DIRECTLY OVER THE BREAST POCKET, where the coin is
dropped, and then the hand moves away easily, a little distance
from the pocket....

While this is going on, naturally the left fingers under the
handkerchief, pretend to hold the coin.... and as you are just
about to drop the coin in pocket, or better still JUST ABOUT AS
YOUR HAND IS ABOUT TO APPROACH THE BREAST
POCKET.... you misdirect by saying, "I'm going to let you SEE
THE COIN." Then all eyes are directed at once to the center of
the handkerchief and the dirty work can proceed in the next
instant....

You would like this, if you saw it DONE....

A Sleight with a Cigarette

(and a good laugh)

This is an entirely impromptu thing and can be used anywhere
and any place, and is especially effective at a dinner table or cafe
or parlor.... using a borrowed cigarette. BUT.... the switch itself
can be used in ANY trick where a cigarette is substituted for
another one.

In this instance you borrow a cigarette from someone, and
without apparently making any moves whatsoever, you take the
cigarette, and expressing great surprise, you pull out the cigarette
and it stretches way out like rubber, after doing this three or four
times, you pass the cigarette back again and needless to say, it is
all right, and the spectators, besides being compelled to laugh at
a ludicrous bit of by-play with someone else's cigarette, are also
completely fooled.

The speed with which you work this sleight or switch, will
determine the laughs or mystery you get out of the move.

First of all have the RUBBER CIGARETTE thumb palmed in
the right hand (held in crotch of thumb between thumb and first
finger).... Ask to borrow a cigarette and when one is offered, you
take it with your left hand and hold it upright between your
fingers (SEE ILL. NO. 1)....Now bring your right hand over to
left hand, as in FIGURE 2.... forming a "V" with the two
cigarettes.... your left hand now lowers the 2 cigarettes holding
them still in a "V", and as soon as the cigarette leaves the right
hand, the left hand tips to the right so that the tip of the real
cigarette goes into the right hand thumb crotch, where it is
palmed and left hand moves immediately away with rubber
cigarette, left hand tips upside down so the cigarette is pointing
down toward the right fingers which grasp it, stroke it a few
times, and then PULLS IT WAY DOWN, STRETCHING IT TO
FULL LENGTH, and then back again.... when you do this
rapidly three or four times, it is very funny.... after you finish,
turn left hand so cigarette is now pointing upward again, bring
right hand over and form the "V" again and then work the same
moves as explained above so that the real cigarette is in the left
hand at finish. You then pass it back to the spectator, and
reaching in your pocket for your handkerchief, you leave the
cigarette, and bring out hank, and wipe off your hands.... IF YOU

How to Use an Old Broken Breakaway Fan

I know there's hundreds of them around.... I have two myself in
my cellar.... you can work several tricks with PART of the fan....
I'll give you ONE.... Take out the pin that holds the fan together
at the handle.... this gives you several SMALL FANS.... now
you'll find that if you fan one of them (say one with three or four
leafs) that you can show it back and. front Or both sides, and
everything will appear to be all right.... but if you stuck a
MINIATURE PLAYING CARD on one of the leafs, and then
reversed the fan, IT WON'T SHOW, yet you can show both
sides.... well, simply have the duplicate of the miniature card
forced, and show the fan back and front, and. then after the card
has been selected.... either open it up and show the miniature
which wasn't on either side a moment ago.... or give it to some
lady, opening the fan so she can SEE THE MINIATURE CARD,
and tell her that it is the fan of CHIN CHIN ALLATIME and if
she fans herself while she concentrates, she will be able to tell
the name of the card. Allow her to see plainly the little card, as
you hand her the fan.... if you work it this way you needn't call
attention to the fan beforehand.... but afterward, you can casually
show the both sides of the fan.... and she will be as puzzled as
they are, because she sees that the card she just looked at has
GONE.

If you HAVEN'T A BROKEN FAN, and you are DYING to do
this trick, I'll send you part of one for nothing.... unless they are
all gone by the time you ask for it.

(Card Trick)

It's a swell effect tho'.... and worth the two sleights.... A spectator
takes his own deck over in the corner or out of the room and
shuffles them, merely THINKS OF A CARD and when he hands
you the deck you take one card out, lay it on the table, and it is
turned over later, and that is the card he selected or just thought
of.

The effect alone of this trick will command immediate attention
from an audience if you SELL THE IDEA TO THEM BEFORE
YOU START. We will suppose he thought of the ten of spades....
when you take the deck back.... you take out any card, but
apparently you think deeply before you take the card out. Lay it
face down on the table and as you lay it down, bend the corner
up a LITTLE. We'll say the card is the ace of hearts. Tell them
that this is really not a sure thing. If you get the card, you will be
very lucky, and as long as you have laid one card. down it is
perfectly all right for you to ask the name of the card selected.

AS YOU SAY ALL THIS, the cards are face toward you; held
by both hands. They will now tell you the name of the card; You
say, "Well, that's all right if it's the 10 of spades.... you know
most everyone thinks of a deuce of clubs or a five of hearts or
some card like that." and as you talk you locate the 10 of spades
and bring it to the top of deck, by simply cutting the cards at that
10 spot.

You now have the 10 of spades on top of the deck. Make a
double a lift and take these two cards in right hand and show
them, saying "You didn't think of the five of hearts tho' did
you?.... this card below the ten spot must be mentioned as one of
the cards that people usually think of, before you show it.... hold
the 2 cards over the top of deck, drop the under one and with
right hand.... you perform the Mexican turnover with the ace of
hearts on the table and show that the card you laid down was the
10 of spades, now IN A FLASH, before they can get their eyes
off the 10, you do the TOP CHANGE, and the ace is now
changed to the five and you carelessly throw that down on table
face up.... and I defy anyone to get this, if you do it right.... I
could mention name after name of fellows who have bet me
money they could do it right away, simply because they saw the

The Four Aces

in a different manner

Here's a quick one, when anyone thinks of an ace trick, you'll
think of this....

The four aces are put in different places in deck and they SEE
THEM THERE.... you pass your hand over the deck and, they
are CHANGED. This is another one you'll like to do.

Hold the deck in left hand, the 4 aces laying on table. Pick up a
red ace and put it at the back of deck (the deck is held face
toward spectator).... another red ace is placed on the face of the
deck.... so far we have now a red ace on bottom and one on top
with the deck held so spectators see the ace on front.... Now a
black ace is inserted in center of deck. The ace of clubs.... next
put the ACE OF SPADES IN FRONT OF this AND ALLOW
BOTH CARDS TO PROTRUDE FROM THE END OF DECK
ABOUT AN INCH.... so they see the red card on face and they
see the ace of spades and they know the ace of clubs is behind it.
Now show the red ace is on top again.... and you are going to
show the ace of clubs THIS WAY.... deck held still in left hand,
right forefinger bends ace of spades forward so they can see the
ace of clubs is back of it, left top or TIP of forefinger goes
against the ace of clubs as the right forefinger lets the ace of
spades go back again in place.

Now ALL YOU DO IS PUSH WITH THE LEFT
FOREFINGER ALL THE CARDS IN REAR OF ACE OF
CLUBS AND INCLUDING THE ACE OF CLUBS TO THE
RIGHT HAND WHERE THEY ARE PALMED FOR A
SECOND, RIGHT HAND BROUGHT DOWN TO SIDE, AND
THEN RIGHT HAND BROUGHT UP CARDS PLACED ON
TOP OF THE OTHERS ALL SQUARED UP, AND NOW the
red aces are in the middle and the black aces, on top and bottom,
where they are shown.... the move is exactly as if you were going
to PALM HALF THE DECK for reproducing a fan under the
knee.

REPEAT IT IF YOU WISH.

Who said there was nothing new?.... well, Sir, this something is
NOT new.... but it IS NEW and I offer it for the first time to
MAGICIANS to use in their magic work, FIRMS that make a
specialty of selling apparatus and ideas to gamblers sell what I
am going to tell you about for TWO DOLLARS a few inches,
but NOW, for the first time, you will be able to buy all you want
for around a half a dollar, In DRUG STORES it is called
adhesive for TOUPES.... used by men to STICK TOUPES TO
THEIR HEADS, so they won't fall off. Sounds silly, using a
thing like that doesn't it? But if you're near an ART STORE go in
and ask them FOR ADHESIVE TAPE WITH THE ADHESIVE
ON BOTH SIDES, and if they are out to date they'll have it in
stock. Now if you can't get it anywhere you let me know and. I'll
get you a LARGE ROLL enough to satisfy you for quite a while
for the large sum of 79 cents which is what I pay for it. But it
does come in smaller sizes for 50 cents or thereabouts. It's
adhesive tape, then WITH THE STICKINESS on BOTH sides,
and that's what the story is.

There isn't much more to say if you have imagination. However,
there are SO MANY ways this can be applied to magic, that I
will only delve into a few, and when you get the idea of how it
can be used, then you can use your OWN IDEAS.

I give a gambling demonstration at clubs and organizations, and I
have a little piece of the tape right on the callous under my third
finger, on the open hand.... If you are playing for money and
change is used, or even chips, show them how easy it is for you,
after a pot is won by someone else, to PUSH OVER THE POT
TO HIM WITH THE HAND WITH THE TAPE (THE RIGHT
HAND) AND SAY "The pot's yours, feller".... and then show the
palm of your hand, and let them see that a dime or a quarter has
stuck to the hand.... What a laugh that is, to show them how easy
it is for you to cheat, IF YOU WANTED TO.

Another way is to ask a druggist to give you ten dimes for a
dollar bill.... when he does so, and he puts them on the counter,
you push them aside as if you wanted to count them easily, and
stick one to your palm, and then argue with him as long as you
wish, about only getting nine dimes back.

a well.... About 6 inches in the front of the well, have a black
piece of card. To the end of this tie a thread and have the end of
thread down the well, THRU THE WELL and off stage. On top
of the black piece of card have a SMALL PIECE OF THE
TAPE. Now have a card selected, and when you get it back in the
deck shuffle the card to the bottom, or you can HAVE THE
DECK SHUFFLED. Then take the deck and show faces to prove
the card is still in the deck, and when you see it yourself, as you
turn around, you make the pass, bringing the card to the bottom.
Lay the deck face down ON TOP OF THE TAPE AND BLACK
PIECE OF CARD. As soon as this is done, your assistant pulls
the thread slowly and it will draw the SELECTED CARD AND
THE BLACK CARD SLOWLY BACKWARD AND INTO
THE WELL.... NOW ISN'T IT A MIRACLE IF YOU TELL
your audience that the card was selected freely.... put back in the
deck, and you have told them to watch every move you made.
You showed them the card was in the center of the deck
somewhere, and now without doing a thing you are going to
make the card disappear. AND THEN WHEN YOU ARE
READY ALLOW ANY SPECTATOR TO PICK UP THE
DECK HIMSELF AND RUN THRU IT AND THE CARD IS
REALLY GONE.

You can have a small piece tied, OR STUCK, RATHER to the
ends of a handkerchief and then by simply pressing lightly
another handkerchief against the tape, it will appear when you
lift them up, the handkerchiefs are tied. together. If you do this,
make a small knot in the ends of silk first, so they'll really look as
if they're tied.

PUT A SMALL PIECE INSIDE YOUR BILLIARD BALL
SHELL and then when you vanish a ball by inserting it in the
shell YOU'LL BE ABLE TO TOSS THE SHELL AND BALL
IN THE AIR, and they'll stick together, and look LIKE ONLY
ONE BALL, fooling the ones who know about the shell.

You can put a small strip against the side of your trousers and
then stick cigarettes on the strip. To get them off when you wish
to produce them, ROLL THEM OFF, and they won't break.

If you stick a small piece as explained in the first idea on the
callous of right hand palm, IT IS REMARKABLE HOW EASY
IT IS TO PALM OFF THE TOP CARD FROM THE DECK
AND KEEP THE FINGERS WIDE OPEN. I use this one a lot.

If you want to vanish a coin QUICKLY, stick a piece in the
center of your white pocket handkerchief, and then when you

borrow the coin, drape the hank over left fist, and with right
hand, put the coin underneath and stick it to the tape.... When
ready, shake handkerchief and coin apparently has gone.

A Card Trick for Your Club Show

The reason I named it that, was because I put it in my own
show.... the effect of the trick is that a card is taken, and replaced
and the deck shuffled.... the deck is then fanned so spectators can
see the cards, and attention is called to the fact that you might
GUESS at the card selected, but you would only have 1 chance
out of 52 in guessing RIGHT. You then turn to some TOTAL
STRANGER and have him look over the cards and without
undue influence on the stranger, you tell him to settle his mind
on one card and HE TELLS THE OTHER SPECTATOR THE
NAME OF THE CARD HE SELECTED. Of course there are no
confederates.

You use anyone's deck for this, if you wish, or your own, the
idea and effect is the real thing.... the method.... I'm sure you'll
like, as it is subtle.... The principle is that when you fan the deck
WITH ONE HAND, and it is the right hand, with faces up that
all the cards will show, that is the pips will show.... but if you
take the deck in the LEFT HAND, with the faces UP and fan it
with that left hand, THERE WILL BE NO PIPS SHOWING,
except the last card.

Now for the routine.... have a card selected, and replaced and
brought to the top.... by the pass or any method.... now with right
hand, fan the deck with THAT ONE HAND, and show them the
cards.... explaining as stated above that you would have a mighty
slim chance of getting the card if you GUESSED. But now you
turn to someone at your left and some one seated in a spot where
no one could see the cards but that person if you fanned them in
front of her.... you remark that this man or lady doesn't know
magic, and that they never DID do tricks, but you are to fan the
deck in front of them and ask them to concentrate on some ONE
CARD that they see, and then after taking plenty of time they
will announce the name of the Card that was selected without
any help whatsoever from you.... you take the deck and overhand
shuffle it, leaving the top or selected card on the bottom of the
deck. Now take the cards in left hand, face up and toward you,
and fan them with left hand.... and then hold them in front of the
spectator....

Naturally that being the only card they can see, they will name
it.... but tell them to take their time.... they will enter the spirit of

the thing and do as you request. After they name the card, say
slyly, "Don't tell how it's done will you?" They'll know what you
mean but the other spectators will think you are KIDDING
