Chapter One

Kota Amergan left the club. He hadn’t had any luck tracking

down the man Alpha Maverick had sent him here to find. He was
tired and ready to get some shut-eye. The club had been too loud, too
crowded, and the women kept groping him at every turn. It would
have been nice, if he swung that way, but Kota never preferred
women.

There were a few prospects in there, but none of the men had had

even given him a hard on. He was a forever kinda guy, and they were
all one night stands. No thanks. He’d had his share of those, and he
wanted more than meaningless sex. He wanted his mate, if he was
ever lucky enough to find him.

Kota decided to head back to his hotel and unwind with some

television and his hand. Jacking off was lonely, but it had its uses. If
that was his only choice at the moment, he would take it.

He pulled the collar of his coat up as he made his way down the

seedy street. This was one fucked-up ass neighborhood. Drug dealers
littered every corner and hookers came out of the woodwork like
roaches when you turned the lights on. They were everywhere.

He stepped over a homeless drunk begging for change. The only

reason he didn’t give it was because he wasn’t contributing to the

disease. Having seen the destruction alcohol and drugs did to
someone’s life, and he would rather buy the guy a hot meal and a cup
of coffee. Kota shoved his hands in his coat pockets, moving further
up the street.

Kota wasn’t afraid to be out here. He was a Timber wolf, the

baddest of all wolf breeds. At six eight, and two hundred forty pounds
of pure muscle, no one fucked with him. At three hundred and sixty-
six years, he was too mature to get tangled up with all the bullshit.
Besides, being his Alpha’s Beta, Maverick would kick his ass.

A gust of wind blew his waist length blond hair up in a whirlwind,

Kota cut around another corner, getting out of the cold draft. He
looked around at the drab buildings that surrounded him, wishing he
were back home in the small town he lived in where the sound of the
forest caressed his fur as he ran through the woods. Not hookers
yelling for him to pay for pleasure. The exhaust fumes alone were
choking his lungs.

What the hell had Maverick been thinking sending him out here?
Kota ducked into one of the many corner stores that crowded the

city streets. Cheap beer and cigarettes advertisements littered the
storefront windows.

“Can I help you?”
Kota stood at the counter. Thick Plexiglas separated him from the

cashier. The man picked at a scab before rearranging the chicken in
the tray under the heated lamps. He shuddered to think of anyone
eating anything those fingers had touched with no gloves on.

“Do you have any shaving cream?” He didn’t want to think of the

man touching the canister as he pulled it off of the shelf. Once he was
back in his hotel room, he would dump the bag into the sink and rinse
it before handling it.

“We have condoms. You need condom? We have Steel Reserve

beer, ninety-nine cents a can. We also have cigarettes at state
minimum prices.” The foreign cashier beamed a mouthful of missing
and discolored teeth at him proudly.

background image

“No, just the shaving cream.” Kota knew he could get it at the

hotel, but since he was here he might as well take care of it.

“Five thirty-two.”
Kota tossed a twenty down into the Plexiglas covered tray.
“Four sixty-eight is your change. Have a nice night.”
Kota stared at the change in the scratched chrome tray. “I gave

you a twenty.”

“No, sir. I received a ten dollar bill. If you cause me trouble, I will

call the police.”

Kota growled. He wasn’t pressed for the money. It was the

principle of it. His hand reached into the tray, grabbing the Plexiglas
and giving a tug. The thick barrier groaned under his strength.

The man gaped at Kota, hurriedly opening his register and tossing

a ten dollar bill with the rest of the shifter’s change. “Now, go.” The
man waved his hands at Kota to shoo him. “I don’t want any trouble.”

“Then stop ripping people off.” Kota fisted the change from the

tray, shoving it into his slacks as the man wheeled the turnstile
around. Grabbing the brown paper bag, Kota shoved it into the pocket
of his coat then rubbed his hand on the tweed. He would spray his
hand down with disinfectant when he got to his room.

“Have a good night.” The cashier waved at him as he exited the

store. What a crackpot.

His gaze drifted around him, noticing the bar across the street was

one of the names on his list of places to check. Aggravated, Kota
stepped off of the curb as he made his way over.

Dodging around traffic, Kota trotted to the other side of the street.

The bar was one of many, nothing special about it. Neon lights
flickered in the windows with the different alcohol logos.

As he entered the place, cigarette smoke assaulted him. The new

law should have stopped these people from smoking inside, but
apparently the owner turned his head. Kota waved his hand in front of
him as he made his way over to the bar.

He turned for a moment, watching the stripper dancing on stage.

background image

11

The guy had a nice body, one Kota could appreciate.

“You like?”
He turned to see a stocky man with his arms crossed over his chest

staring at him. The man’s head nodded toward the stage. “You can
rent him out.”

Kota turned his head once more to stare at the jiggling ass

swinging from side to side as the young man danced for the lust filled
men cheering him on. He had to admit the guy was nice looking
enough, and he did have a hotel room.

“No, not my thing.” Although it was tempting—he was a guy after

all—the thought of purchasing a human being didn’t sit right with
him. Some did it for the thrill. Most had no other choice. He wouldn’t
take advantage of someone else’s misfortune.

The bartender laughed deeply. “Then what the hell are you doing

in here?”

“Looking for someone.” Kota pulled the paper from his inside

pocket, handing it over. The guy took it, scanned it over, then handed
it back.

“Sorry, can’t help you.”
It was the same story Kota had heard for the past two days.
“Drinks are on the house. Enjoy the show.” The man winked at

him before walking off to help others customers.

Kota leaned his back against the bar. The man on stage was

watching him, licking his lips in a suggestive manner toward him.

Kota reached around for the drink that was given to him, taking a

seat closer to the stage as the dancer seemed to target him. He bent
over backwards, grabbing his ankles as he jutted his ass out.

The shifter swallowed his drink down as he felt his erection

pressing into the zipper of his slacks. Once the show was over, Kota
made a hasty departure. The dancer seemed very interested,
something Kota wasn’t going to get into.

The streets seemed a little more deserted when he stepped back

out into the night.

He tucked his hands into his pockets as he sighed. His feet carried

him down an alley, knowing it was a short cut to his hotel from the
previous night.

“Hey, big boy, looking for a good time?”
Kota rolled his eyes. Fuck off. He kept going, not even wanting to

deal with a rent boy. If that’s what he wanted, he would have taken
the one in that bar.

“Come on, baby. I can make you feel real good.” The guy got in

Kota’s face, rubbing his hands up and down his chest.

Kota growled, pissed that someone invaded his personal space

uninvited.

“Chill, dude. I meant no harm. Just trying to make some money to

eat.” The guy backed off. Tucking his hair behind his ear, he dropped
his gaze to the ground. “Sorry.”

Kota froze, sniffing the air around him. He moved closer to the

guy and inhaled deeply. His jaw dropped in shock then quickly
recovered to clench it.

Mine!
“Hey, stop sniffing me. You’re weirding me out.” The prostitute

took a step back. Kota noticed him looking up and down the alley.
The knowledge that they were alone widened the young man’s eyes.
Kota needed to get his mate back to his room. Take care of him.

“How much for the night?” Kota cursed himself for the question,

but he wasn’t about to have his mate out here another second and
doubted he would leave of his own free will.

His mate’s eyes grew wide. “Uh, two hundred?” It was a question,

not a quote.

“Done, come on.” Kota kept the young man next to his side as

they walked back to his room.

The guy was fidgety. His eyes stayed glued to the ground. Kota

pressed his lips together. Now was not the time for questions. Once
his mate had a hot bath and a good night’s sleep, he would find out
how he ended up on the streets selling his body.

background image

13

The hotel came into sight. Kota placed his hand on the small of

his mate’s back, guiding him through the glass and gold front doors.
They rode the elevator to the twelfth floor, stepping off as Kota dug
for his key card. His hand hit the brown paper bag he had in his
pocket. Kota shuddered.

Once the door was open, allowing his mate to walk in, Kota

turned to close and lock it.

“No. I’m paying for the night, correct?” Kota grabbed his mate’s

wrists, stopping him from unzipping his slacks. This was not how he
wanted to be with him, bought and paid for.

His mate’s head tilted back, the most erotic sight Kota had ever

witnessed, and it took nerves of steel not to crumble and give in at the
sight of his mate on his knees.

“W–what do you want?”
He could see the wariness in his mate’s eyes, the way his body

tensed. This would not do. His mate should be relaxed around him.
The claiming could wait. His mate needed healing of the soul first.

Kota bent down, sliding his hand under his mate’s arm, lifting him

to his feet. “I want you to bathe then come to bed.”

“I’m clean. I showered before I left home. You’re the first person

tonight.”

And the last. The words brought home the fact that Kota had his

work cut out for him. He watched as his mate walked off into the
bathroom, closing the door behind him.

Kota turned the bed down, stripping down into his boxer briefs

before sliding under the blankets. He could hear the tub filling and his
mate getting undressed. Being a Timber wolf, his hearing was keen.
Timber wolves can hear a leaf falling to the ground in autumn.

The door opened twenty minutes later, and his mate looked

pruned, his pale skin pinked. Kota lifted the blanket for his mate to
join him.

The young man crawled onto the bed, sliding down. Kota stopped

him, pulling him up to his chest. “No.”

“You’re paying me to sleep with you? Actually sleep?”
Kota chuckled at the look his mate had. It was a cross between

unbelievable and thinking Kota a nut. “Yes.”

Something flashed across his mate’s face, his mouth rounding into

an O. “Your plumbing doesn’t work. Its, uh, it’s cool.”

Kota fell onto his back, laughing. The young man was comical.

“Get some sleep.”

Chapter Two

Blair stretched, relishing the feel of a soft bed. For the first time in

a long while, he hadn’t had to go to sleep with feelings of disgust for
selling himself to survive. Well, he had, but sex hadn’t been involved.
He thought about the apocalyptic dude he followed to the hotel room.
There was something ancient and old-world about him. Something
commanding. He had felt relaxed enough to actually fall asleep,
which was a big no-no in Blair’s book. Too many bad things could
happen while in dreamland. He should know.

Opening his eyes, Blair looked around. The room was empty.

Fuck! Did he stiff him? If he did, Blair missed a whole night of
making money. He would be behind now, having to work harder to
catch up.

The door opened, and the man walked through with a tray and a

large shopping bag. Blair was curious to know what was in the bag,
but the aroma of food overpowered that thought.

“Morning, sunshine. Hungry?”
“Starved, as a matter of fact.” He pushed himself up into a sitting

position, wondering if he had to get up and get his own food. The guy
set the bag down and brought the tray over to him. Guess not. The
dome was lifted from the plate, and the wafting steam revealed
scrambled eggs, toast, bacon, and home fries. Oh, yeah. He tucked his
hair behind his ear and smiled. It really did look delicious.

“Let me know if you want more, and I’ll order it up.” The man

walked over to the small, round hotel room table that he had set the
bag on, rifling through it and pulling clothes out. He set a toothbrush
down, and a comb, deodorant and mouthwash. Blair shrugged and

background image

dug into his food. His eyes rolled at the heavenly taste. Everything
was just the way he liked it. The eggs were fluffy, bacon tender, and
the home fries browned just right. The toast was even perfect.

Blair kept an eye on his paying host as he ate, watching for any

sudden moves. He still didn’t trust that someone paid another person
to just sleep then gave them breakfast in bed. This shit wasn’t Pretty
Woman
, and he wasn’t Julia Roberts. Fairy tale crap didn’t happen,
especially not to people like him. The only knight in shining armor he
was going to see was in a museum.

The fierce looking dude sat in one of two chairs that occupied the

room, steepling his fingers under his bottom lip and watching Blair
eat.

Awkward.
That’s what he felt like having someone watch him chew his food.

Blair suddenly became aware of how he ate, chewed, and swallowed.
It sounded like a booming echo now that attention was being paid to
it. He sipped his juice, which had the acoustic effect of a bullhorn in
front of it, then set his glass and fork down.

He dropped his gaze to the tray, tucking his hair behind his ear.

Why wouldn’t the guy stop staring at him? Was he, like, voyeuristic?
He knew it was time to go. This was becoming too bizarre. Setting the
tray aside and sliding from the bed, Blair walked into the bathroom
only to find his clothes were not where he had laid them. He checked
the little cabinet under the sink, but nothing. Shit, was the guy going
to try and hold him there? He would walk out naked if he had to.
Nobody was holding him hostage.

Blair walked back into the room, walking straight up to the still

sitting man. “Could I please have my clothes back?” The man stood.
Holy shit, he was altitude privileged. Blair was six one. This guy had
to be close to seven feet. He hadn’t paid attention last night, too busy
trying to get the job done.

“Those clothes on the table over there are for you. I also took the

liberty of getting you some personal hygiene items.” The man

background image

Sunshine’s Savior

17

leisurely raised his hand, tucking his index finger under Blair’s chin.
Blair stopped himself from flinching. He didn’t want to piss the man
off because knew he for a fact that he wouldn’t be able to take him in
a fight. It didn’t look like anybody could. The guy slanted his lips and
kissed Blair feather light on the lips. Blair stood there momentarily in
a trance, leaning in for another. He shook his head and stepped back.

Kissing johns was against his rules. It was way too personal, too

intimate. Blair grabbed the clothes from the table and shoved his legs
in the jeans, pulling the sweater over his head. Where did he put his
shoes? There. Grabbing the tennis shoes on the floor by the dresser,
he laced them up and stood. The socks, they were just lost.

“Um, can I have my money now?” Blair tucked his hair back,

twisting his fingers together as he waited.

The guy pulled his wallet out and handed Blair two crisp one

hundred dollar bills. Shoving the notes in his front pocket, he sighed.
“Well. It’s, uh, been fun. Come find me if you want someone to sleep
with you again.” He headed to the door, feeling a sadness pull at him.
Why would he be sad to leave a trick? Well, technically the dude
wasn’t. He didn’t qualify as one since no sex was exchanged. That’s
how Blair looked at it anyway.

He took a deep breath to rid those crazy feelings and reached for

the doorknob.

“Wait.”

* * * *

Kota couldn’t let his mate just walk out the door. He had seen the

way the guy hesitated, and he knew he didn’t want to go back out
there on the streets. He had to think fast. “How much would it cost me
to keep you off the streets, not selling yourself?”

His mate’s head snapped back. “Dude, you should seriously get

back on the meds.”

“Okay, since that’s not a reasonable request to you, how much

background image

18

Lynn Hagen

would it cost me to have you by my side while I’m in town?” Kota
waited for his next quick witted remark.

“Okay, Richard Gere, why don’t you put the pipe down and come

back to reality.”

“Who?”
“Haven’t you seen…never mind. I’m going to go along with the

story line and tell you cash. Up front. Two grand.”

Two grand was a drop in the bucket to Kota. His mate’s life was

priceless. He would take as long as he had to convince him to go
home with him, convince Blair that they were mates. “Done. I’ll have
to stop at my bank. Is that reasonable?”

The young man stood there with his jaw on his chest and his eyes

as wide as saucers. Wasn’t it enough? Kota would pay more.

“Uh, yeah. Okay. Um, what are we going to do while you’re

here?”

“I have to track someone down. Since you are a native here,

maybe you could assist me?” Kota gently tugged his mate further
back into the room, and the guy looked too dazed to argue. He had at
least a few days before Alpha Maverick started calling and
questioning him about his delay. Kota would take that time to get to
know this young man, find out what made him tick.

“Uh, sure, I can take you around. It would probably help if I were

there anyway because, no offense, but you’re one big ass scary dude.
People would piss themselves and run away before you even got to
ask them anything.”

Kota smiled. His mate was charming, in a hallucinatory sort of

way. “My name is Dakota, but everyone calls me Kota.”

“Everyone calls me Raven. I don’t give my real name to anyone.”
Kota frowned. This wouldn’t do. He wanted—no, needed—to

know his mate’s name. He didn’t want the street one. “I think I am
paying enough to at least get your real name. That isn’t
unreasonable.”

The young man sighed, tucking his hair behind his ear. He did that

background image

Sunshine’s Savior

19

a lot. Was it nerves or just habit? Kota guided him to the edge of the
bed and sat him down, squatting down in front of his mate. The guy
dropped his eyes again. Kota suppressed a growl. “Lowering your
eyes is a sign of submission. Do not give anyone that part of you…not
even to me.” The man brought his gaze back up to meet his. Better.

“It’s, uh, Blair.”
“Blair. I like that. It’s nice to meet you, Blair.”
His mate smiled shyly, “Nice to meet you, too, Dakota.”
His name sounded like a symphony coming from his mate,

wanting to hear it over and over again. Kota noticed the guy didn’t
have a coat. He would rectify that. It was too chilly out not to have
one. “Please excuse me.” Kota went out into the hallway, extracting
his cell phone and calling the clothing store downstairs, requesting a
coat in the young man’s size, in white. His mate’s hair would contrast
with it beautifully. He walked back in to find Blair stripping his
clothes off.

“What are you doing, young man?”
“I figured, for two grand, you wanted your money’s worth.”

Again, his eyes dropped. He stood there naked, hands clasped in front
of him, looking nervous as hell.

“No. I am not renting you. You’re my assistant. You’ll help me in

my task. Nothing more. If sex is to happen, it will be natural, not
because you feel it has been paid for. Now, raise your eyes.”

Blair raised his head, tears welling up in them.

* * * *

Blair was humiliated. Wiping his eyes, he grabbed his jeans,

punching his legs in and yanking the sweater back over his head. He
stood there with his back to Dakota, unable to face him. That had
been the most embarrassing moment he had had in a long time, and
considering how he made a living, that spoke volumes. Why should
he care what the man thought of him? No one took their time to get to

background image

20

Lynn Hagen

know him, to actually want to spend more than a quickie with him.

Dakota did. The giant hadn’t made one move sexually toward

Blair. Well, except for that kiss. Was it a kiss if their lips barely
touched? Maybe the guy was dysfunctional down there and just
wanted company. Hey, stranger shit happened. The guy never did
confirm or deny it. Fine. If Dakota didn’t want sex, Blair would back
off. He did want to earn that money, though. He wasn’t a scam artist.
Blair squared his shoulders. He would help him find whoever the guy
was looking for.

“Turn around, sunshine.”
Blair slowly turned, keeping his eyes glued to the floor. He

couldn’t look Dakota in the eyes. He felt dirty, like low class trash.
Instead, Blair grabbed a tissue from the box on the nightstand and
blew his nose, sitting on the edge of the bed. He tucked his hair
behind his ear, picking at a fingernail.

Blair raised his eyes to look into that handsome face. Why

couldn’t he be worthy enough for a man like Dakota? The deity
deserved a clean man, free of the baggage Blair carried. Someone
wholesome and sweet. Something he hadn’t been in a very long time.
His innocence had been forcibly taken a long time ago.

“Tell me why you keep lowering your eyes.”
“Embarrassment. Shame. Humiliation. Do you want the list in

alphabetical order?” Blair gave a nervous chuckle.

“Never be any of those things with me. There is no shame or

embarrassment, or even humiliation between us. Understood?” He
pulled Blair to his feet. “Come, we have a bank to visit and a person
to find. Time to get some work done.”

Blair smiled, pulling his shoes on. He really was getting to like

this guy. He didn’t seem so scary now. It would be a shame when he
was gone and Blair had to return to reality. He felt good about earning
money in an honest way, helping Dakota without sex involved. Pride
was a new feeling for him.

There was a knock at the door. Blair looked over curiously as

background image

Sunshine’s Savior

21

Dakota answered it. He pulled in a bag then closed it.

“Here, now you’ll stay warm. Let’s go.” Dakota handed Blair the

bag.

Blair wondered what could be inside. He reached in and felt soft

fabric, pulling out a white coat with fake mink fur around the hood.
At least he thought it was fake. “Why? Why would you care if I was
warm or not?”

“I take care of my employees. Now can we go?” Dakota left the

door open as he headed to the bank of elevators.

Blair followed him, feeling giddy over his new coat. He pulled it

on over his arms, feeling the warmth of the material already.
“Thanks.”

“Blair, what have we been talking about all morning?” Dakota put

his hand on the small of Blair’s back.

Blair raised his eyes, tucking his hair behind his ear. He looked

Dakota right in his beautiful crystal blue eyes, “Thank you.”

“Wasn’t so hard, was it?” Dakota kissed him on the tip of his nose

as the elevator descended to the first floor.

Kota held the glass door open for Blair as they entered the bank.

He filled out his withdrawal slip and handed it to the teller. She
completed the transaction and put the two grand in a secured billfold
for him. “Can I help you with anything else, Mr. Amergan?” The
teller was winking at him and trying to hand him her business card.
He was so damn tired of it. He declined, laying his hand on the small
of Blair’s back, staking his claim in front of her and leading his mate
out.

“Put this somewhere it won’t get lost or stolen.” Kota handed him

the billfold. Blair shoved it in the inside pocket of his coat, zipping it
back up.

“Where to now?”
“It’s your neighborhood. Lead the way.”
They spent the better part of the morning visiting the

establishments on Kota’s list. Maverick had given him hang-out spots

to check. By lunch, Kota was frustrated. Other than a few offers from
some cheap hookers and an irate drug dealer screaming about Kota
scaring away his customers, they had nothing.

“Come on, sunshine, let’s get some lunch.” Kota let Blair pick the

place since this was his neighborhood.

They entered a greasy hamburger joint, the smell of cooking

onions and browning meat filled the air. Kota looked around. The
place had seen better days. They sat in one of the booths by the
window. Kota had to push the bench back to fit. Thank goodness they
weren’t anchored in. There was a green linoleum floor that had faded
into a puke color with grease and traffic stains. It was perfect. The
place reminded Kota of an old-time mom-and-pop place. It had a
homey, welcoming feel to it. He could see why Blair liked it.

Kota grabbed the menu from the metal holder and browsed his

selection. The chili with cheese and onions sounded real good right
about now. He set the menu down, watching his mate furrow his brow
in concentration, his finger scanning up and down the menu while his
lips moved. Kota paid closer attention, listening. Although Blair was
speaking so softly, he could hear him. Timber wolves had unrivaled
auditory, night vision, and tracking skills. He could hear any
whispered words from twenty feet away, his hearing was that good.
Kota heard Blair sounding the words out, struggling to pronounce
them. It surprised him that a man as quick-witted as his mate was
illiterate.

“You know, I got the chili with cheese and onions. It sounds

pretty good. It was really a hard decision between that and the country
fried steak. Maybe I should have gotten the house salad with grilled
chicken. Comes with a baked potato, after all. What do you think?”

Blair sat his menu down, and a look of relief washed over his face.

Kota knew his illiteracy was a huge hurdle for him to get over. There
was no shame in it. He just had to find a way around it, over it, or
through it. Whatever got him to his goal. If he wanted Kota to help, he
would be more than happy to.

“I think the country fried steak sounds good. What would you

have ordered with it?”

“The mashed potatoes and gravy sound good. The vegetable

medley, as well, would have been a good choice had the chili not
caught my eye.”

“I think I’ll steal your idea and get that.” Blair laughed for the first

time, and Kota watched as the deep dimples lit across his face, his
brownish orange eyes sparkling. How had he gotten so lucky? He
caught the waitress’s attention and placed their orders, taking his
mind and libido off of Blair.

They ate in relative silence. When they were finished, Blair was

trying to dig some money out of the billfold without anyone seeing it
to pay for his meal. Kota would never allow his mate to pay for it, he
was old-fashioned. He insisted on taking care of his mate. He laid his
hand on Blair’s, telling him to put it away before someone saw it.
Kota paid, leaving a nice tip, and then stepped out into bright, crisp
afternoon.

Chapter Three

“What else is on your list, boss?”
“Top Cats. Do you know where that’s at?”
Blair’s face fell as his eyes shot down. He blinked then hesitated

before nodding his head. “Sure, I know where it’s at. Follow me.”

The club was quiet this time of day. A few people littered the

tables, but the dance floor was dormant.

“Hey, T. What’s cookin’, doll?” Blair asked as he straddled a

stool.

“Nothing, sweetie pie.” T looked Dakota up and down twice.

“Hmm, what do we have here? You get you a pimp or a body guard,
Raven?” Blair had to bite back a laugh. Dakota looked like he wanted
to run as fast as he could from T.

“Behave, T. He isn’t either of those. He’s just my friend. I’m

kinda helping him out. He’s looking for his little brother who ran
away. Can you help him out? His name is Warrior.” Blair flipped his
hair over his shoulder, crossing his legs at the knees.

T purred at Dakota. “Well, maybe we can exchange

favors…’cause you are one fine looking piece of meat.” The guy ran
his tongue over his bottom lip, staring Dakota up and down.

“Sorry, T. He’s not gay. Believe me, I’ve tried. So, what do ya

say? Can you help?” Blair reached over the bar and grabbed a bottled
water, untwisting the cap and taking a large swallow.

T finally agreed, after asking Dakota two more times if he was

sure he wouldn’t switch teams.

“Hey, Raven, baby. Thought you were going to come by last

night?”

Oh, shit. It was Tony. This wasn’t good at all. He was an easy

buck as long as he liked you. If Blair offended him by turning him
down, he may lose it. The two grand wouldn’t last forever. He had to
think of his future. Crap, crap, crap.

“Hey, Tony. Sorry, got a little tied up.” Blair winked at him.

“Literally.”

“You kinky bastard. Come here and give ’ole Tony a kiss.”
It happened so fast Blair would need a replay to see how Tony

ended up on his back, on the bar, with an angry Dakota choking the
shit out of him.

“Warrior, let him go now!” Blair yanked at the beefy arm. He

might as well have been a fly. Dammit. He climbed on Kota’s back,
slapping his shoulders and trying to wrap his arm around his neck, but
his arm wasn’t long enough. Switching tactics, he said, “Stop it now.
Let him go, Dakota.” Blair whispered in his ear, caressing his hair,
and kissing the side of his face. Dakota relaxed his hold, and the
purple-faced Tony sputtered as he rolled off the bar, clutching his
throat. He took off across the room and out the door, shooting daggers
at Blair.

He jumped down and stormed out, Dakota hot on his heels.
“Blair, wait.”
Blair whirled around, jamming his finger up toward Dakota’s

face. “I told you I don’t use my real name out here, so stop using it!”
Blair stomped across the street, barely missing cars and heading
around a corner.

“Stop!”
Blair threw his hand up in a whatever gesture and kept going.
He cut around to Fifth Street, pissed off beyond belief. How could

Dakota mess with his money like that? Money seemed to mean
nothing to the guy. Well, it meant a hell of a lot to Blair. He had to
survive. He wasn’t sleeping in an abandoned warehouse or under a
bridge. Regulars were hard to come by around here, and he just ruined
one of Blair’s best. Yeah, the guy was slimy, but poor folk can’t be

choosers.

Blair heard whistling, he turned his head to see some guy slowly

rolling next to him in his car.

“Hey, you available?”
“What for?”
“A good time. What else?”
Blair looked over his shoulder to see Dakota gaining on him fast.

Tucking his hair behind his ear, he climbed into the car.

* * * *

The guy unbuttoned his jeans and pulled his zipper down,

releasing his cock. His hand slowly pumped it up and down. “Why
don’t you lean over here and suck it for me?”

Blair looked down at the guy’s hand. He felt nauseated. An image

of Dakota came to mind, his waist-length blonde hair and his crystal
blue eyes. The way he had treated Blair and even the way he helped
him out this morning in the dinner. He may be illiterate, but he wasn’t
stupid. He knew what Dakota was doing, and he had felt warmth for
him in a heart that has been cold for so long. The guy just called to
him. He felt safe, wanted, and special. Dakota treated him like he
mattered. Blair couldn’t do this. He didn’t want to be here. He wanted
out of the car, now.

“Pull over.”
“Why? I can still drive while you suck me off.” The guy reached

up, trying to pull Blair’s head down to his crotch, Blair smacked his
hand away.

“What the fuck? You’re a rent boy, aren’t you?”
“Pull over to the curb now.”
“Oh, I get it. You’re playing shy. Will this cost me extra? I like

shy boys. Show Daddy how good his little boy is.”

Blair was triggered into a flashback. Those words. He thought he

would never hear them again. No, this guy wasn’t him. He was safe

background image

Sunshine’s Savior

27

from him. Safe from the betrayal and agony. He shook his head,
trying to rid the images shooting to the forefront that had been locked
away.

Blair looked over at the man. Did he do that to little boys, too?

Blair’s lip snarled, and he lost control, smacking the guy all over and
screaming, “Pull the damn car over now, you sick fuck! You sick
fucking bastard!”

The car picked up speed as Blair rolled the window down, feeling

the bite of the cold air on his face. The asshole sped up even more, as
if daring him to jump. He pushed himself through and out, covering
his head as he hit the ground rolling.

Blair lay there for a moment, dizzy, shaking his head. After a

minute he got up and started running, not knowing where to go. He
didn’t want to go back to his efficiency. It felt lonely and cold there.
He wanted Dakota. What had he done?

He ran. His mind was racing between the past and the present. A

numb awareness let him know people were bumping into him, but he
was too far gone to care. His chest was tight. He needed air. Blair
stopped. Tears stained his face as he realized he had run right to
Dakota’s hotel.

He slowed his pace, trying to act nonchalant, drying his tears on

the sleeve of his coat. Blair walked casually through the lobby, over
to the elevators and pushed the button, waiting. He saw a few people
looking down their noses at him standing there in his dirty and torn
white coat. Fuck ’em. He wasn’t in the mood. He watched the digital
numbers descend as it reached his floor. The bell dinged, and he
stepped on, pushing the button he needed, waiting again. The elevator
opened, and he stepped off.

Blair stood in front of Dakota’s door, afraid to knock. He was

terrified the man would send him away with harsh words and maybe a
few good punches for good luck.

Blair would deserve them for the way he acted. He was exactly

what his father said he was. A worthless whore. The ice machine

kicked on down the hall and laughter from the next room brought his
mind back to the present. Why couldn’t he have had a normal life?

Finally, tired and dirty, he knocked.

* * * *

Kota paced his hotel room, praying his mate came back to him.

How could he have lost it like that? He should have let Blair handle it.
Instead, he acted just like the hothead he was. He just may have lost
his mate because of it. No. The possibility was unthinkable.

Kota howled, thinking about what his mate was doing right now,

who he was with. Someone was soiling him, using him. He punched
the wall and howled again. The cracks spidered out around the huge
dent he made. This couldn’t be happening. He wanted to find that guy
and rip his throat out. The images assaulted his brain. His mate on his
knees in front of a stranger. His mate on all fours getting fucked by a
stranger.

Stop, stop, stop.
He squeezed his eyes shut, wanting to gouge them out.
How had things gone so wrong? His mate was smiling around

him, relaxing his guard, and Kota had to go and lose his temper. The
thought of that Tony guy putting his lips anywhere near Blair sent
him back into a rage. It brought home exactly what Blair had to do to
survive. Knowing it was one thing. Seeing it made him want to kill
everyone who had ever taken advantage of his mate’s predicament.

Kota stopped pacing, cocking his head. He heard rustling at his

door, a faint inhale then a sigh. His heart quickened at the thought of
it being his mate. If it was, he couldn’t lose his temper. He had to stay
in control. He stepped closer to the door, listening.

A whisper of a knock echoed. That was all he needed. Kota

grabbed the handle and swung the door open. He growled when he
saw the tattered state Blair was in. His mate took a step back, tucking
his hair behind his ear and lowering his head. He didn’t make a sound.

“Are you hurt?” he asked quietly.
Control. Control. Control. This was going to be his new mantra.
Blair shrugged his shoulders but remained still.
Kota held his hand up, waiting for his mate to take it. Blair’s hand

came up but then fell back to his side, his hands fisting. Taking a deep
breath, he placed his fingertips on Kota’s palm.

He led Blair into the room, closing the door. Stepping behind him,

Kota removed the now ruined coat.

Kota inhaled the musky fragrance of his mate, letting it flow

through his nostrils and into his lungs. He wanted to breathe Blair. He
set the coat down, bending to one knee. Kota palmed the shoe and slid
it off, doing the same with its mate. Standing, he led Blair to the
bathroom and sat him on the closed toilet seat.

“Take your shirt off so I can see what damage you have.”
Blair’s hands were shaking so badly he couldn’t get the sweater

over his head. Kota helped him pull it the rest of the way off, tossing
it to the floor. He ran his hand over Blair’s back then down his chest.
Admiring and examining.

“Remove your pants.”
Blair stood, unfastening them, and then slid them down and

stepped out, tossing them to the floor. He sat back down, his head
never lifting once. Kota ran him a warm bath, adding Epsom salt. He
gently lifted Blair by the waist, helping him step in.

Kota kneeled by the tub as he bathed his mate. He held his neck

and dipped him back to wet his hair. The ends had already fanned out,
floating in the water. He washed and rinsed the silken strands. Kota
lifted him out then wrapped him in a heated towel. The second towel
was twisted onto his hair.

Kota picked him up, carrying him to bed and crawling in behind

him. He pulled the covers up and pulled Blair close. Kissing his
temple, Kota turned the light off.

Blair lay snuggled in Dakota’s arms. He had been awake for a

while now but couldn’t bring himself to move. Strong arms were
wrapped around him, cocooning him in and keeping him safe. Blair
snuggled deeper into his warrior. His? Whoa, since when did he start
thinking the guy was his? In a few days this guy would leave him
behind, and Blair would go back to a life that held no appeal in the
first place. His chest tightened at the thought of Dakota leaving him.
He didn’t want to be alone anymore. Blair wrapped his hands around
the chiseled arms, running his finger up and down, memorizing the
dips and curves of tendons.

“Good morning, sunshine.” Dakota kissed the back of his neck,

pulling Blair tighter in his arms. He closed his eyes at the tenderness,
not wanting to let him go.

“Hungry?” A strong hand rubbed his shoulder as his neck was

kissed once more.

Blair shook his head. If he said yes, they would have to get up. He

wanted more time. He wanted forever. Life made him a realist, and he
wasn’t a fool to wish for things he couldn’t have, didn’t deserve. A
few more minutes would do. “I was molested as a boy.” Oh, my
fucking god.
Did he really just say that out loud? What the hell was
wrong with him? Why was he so relaxed with Dakota that he was
ready to tell him his whole life history? Guys didn’t want confessions.
They wanted a good time. Then it was “I’ll call you”. Blair mentally
slapped himself. He had just messed up a perfectly good cuddle
session.

Dakota shifted, pulling Blair tighter into his arms. “You’re safe,

sunshine.” He kissed Blair’s hair, gently rocking him. Blair took a
deep breath to steel his nerves as he told Dakota all the sordid details.

His warrior just lay there listening, petting him. He told him of his

dad sneaking into his room and forcing himself on a much younger
Blair. Talked of all the years it had gone on. How his father had called
him his “dirty little whore” or asked him to “show Daddy how good

background image

his little boy is.” He relived how his father had said he was too old
now and kicked him out onto the streets.

“I have a little brother. I tried to tell someone. I tried to get him

out. No one listened to me. No one cares. He’s seventeen. I don’t
know what to do. I’ve been out here for three months now.” Blair
wiped at his eyes with the palm of his hands. “I kept him safe, kept
my father’s attention on me so he would leave Oliver alone. I don’t
know what’s happened since I haven’t been there.” Blair felt as
though part of him was cleansed. Even if nothing came of his
confession, a weight had been lifted.

“Do you trust me, Blair?”
“More than anyone else. Why?”
Dakota turned him over, staring into Blair’s eyes. “There’s

something you need to know. I’ve been struggling with how to tell
you and feared you would freak out. But since you have honored me
with your trust, I feel I owe you the same.”

Blair searched his face, trying to guess what it might be. Was he

married? Wanted by the FBI? Did he have a house full of screaming
kids running around? What? “Please. Tell me. I’ll try not to freak
out.”

Blair gasped as Dakota’s eyes turned crimson red, like the devil.

“What are you? Are you going to hurt me?

Chapter Four

“Never. I would never hurt you. I am a three hundred and sixty-

six-year-old Timber wolf. And you are my mate.”

Blair scrambled out of the bed, slamming his back into the wall. It

tore at Kota’s heart to see such fear in his mate.

“Stay away from me. D–don’t come near me.”
Kota rose from the bed, stalking toward Blair. The shock in his

mate’s eyes pained him, but now that the smaller man knew he
couldn’t be allowed to go.

Blair skated along the wall trying to make it to the door. Kota

slammed a hand on either side of Blair’s head, trapping him. “You are
my mate. I have waited over three centuries to find you. I will not
allow you to leave me.”

Blair was shaking spastically. His mate was whimpering and

cowering. This was unacceptable. Kota pulled Blair’s naked body into
his arms. “Do you not feel safe with me? Do you not feel the pull to
be near me? A blanket of sadness covers you at the thought of us
separating?”

Blair nodded into Kota’s chest.
“That is because fate has chosen you for me. For me to cherish

and love you. Your happiness and health come before even my own.
Do not fear me, sunshine. I will never harm you.”

“You’re a

─a wolf?”

“Yes, my love. I am.” Kota picked him up and carried him back to

bed. He lay his mate down and crawled over him, looking down at the
man he was going to spend the next six centuries with. “Now that you
know, do you still trust me?”

background image

Sunshine’s Savior

33

Kota held his breath. If his mate didn’t trust him, wouldn’t accept

his wolf, then how would he convince him to bond with him?
Convince him to come home to safety and love?

Blair nodded.
“Good. There is something among my kind called a claiming. It

happens when a wolf finds his mate. I haven’t done this with you
because you’re not ready. When you are, I will know.” Kota leaned
down, claiming the lips he had been dying to taste. All his senses
came alive at that moment of contact.

Blair broke the kiss. “What do you have to do in this claiming?”
“When you’re ready, I will make love to you. I will ask you if you

accept me.” Kota nibbled further down his neck. “If you say yes, I
will bite your shoulder.” He nipped gently to show his mate what he
meant. “Binding our souls and hearts for eternity. If you tell me that
you accept me and use my name at any time, the binding begins. So
think carefully before those words leave your lips. The process cannot
be stopped once started. Or reversed, sunshine.”

“Will you ever hurt me? Even if I make you really angry?”
“Never. A wolf waits too long to find its mate. Some never do.

You will be cherished and loved. Do not take that as a sign of
weakness though. I won’t have you trying to run over me. I can’t and
won’t tolerate that.”

Blair cupped his face and pulled him down, stealing another

heated kiss. He stared into Kota’s eyes as if searching for something.
His mate had the most mesmerizing eyes. Blair gave a slight nod and
smiled, those deep dimples carving into his face. Angelic.

“I didn’t, Dakota.” Blair kissed him again
“Didn’t what, sunshine?” Kota asked as he licked and kissed

Blair’s jaw and neck. His mate’s skin was smooth, tempting him to
toss away his patience and claim what was his and damn the
consequences. Pulling back to break away from the temptation, Kota
stared down into forever.

“Didn’t do anything with that guy. I couldn’t. All I kept thinking

background image

34

Lynn Hagen

about was you. He wouldn’t let me go. I had to jump out of his
window. That’s how I messed up the new coat you bought me. I’m
sorry.” Kota leaned down and kissed his mate again, nuzzling his
neck. He could get used to this real fast.

“Thank you.” Kota ran his fingers through soft black silk. His

mate hadn’t done it, hadn’t been soiled. He didn’t care about anything
before he found him. Blair did what he had to do to survive. He only
cared about what happened now. The thought of—

“I want to be your mate, Dakota.”
Huh? “No. What have you done, little one? You’re not ready.”

Kota had wanted to wait, didn’t want Blair feeling bought. He had
hated paying him and having his mate feeling degraded. It had been
the only way to get him to stay. Kota would have given his whole
portfolio for Blair. Man, he just kept jumping from one mess into
another.

His plan was to coax his mate to accept a life with him, take him

home to get used to the idea of mating a were-creature. Not claim him
in a hotel room under the idea of his time and body being paid for.
Kota knew it was too late now. The claiming had started, and any idea
of putting it off slipped from his hand when his mate uttered those
words.

“Only I can say when I’m ready. I’m ready.” Blair’s grin stretched

his whole face. If Dakota spoke the truth, he got to keep him.

“I’m going to have a hell of a time keeping you out of trouble,

aren’t I?” Kota chuckled as his mate gave a mischievous nod.

“Fine. Let the claiming begin.”

* * * *

Kota stripped down, watching his mate lick his lips. “Is my mate

pleased?” Kota splayed his hands to indicate his body.

“Does a bear shit in the woods? Hell, yeah. Dude, you’re a god.”

Kota laughed as he crawled back in bed. He pulled Blair under him,

background image

Sunshine’s Savior

35

letting his eyes take in the smaller man’s naked form.

“You’re the god. You’re beautiful, mate.” Kota dipped down and

captured his lips, nipping and licking the sweet taste. Blair wrapped
his legs around Kota’s waist, running his hands through his hair. “I
want you to remember something, love.” Kota kissed and licked his
gorgeous man’s neck.

“Anything, Dakota.” Blair moaned.
“Whatever we do together is between two mates. There is no

shame.” Kota sucked his skin until he reached a pink little nipple. He
lapped and bit, raising it to a peak. His tongue trailed across to reach
the other, rolling the flesh in his teeth.

“I’ll try. I promise. Fuck, you’re a biter.” Blair pushed his nipple

against Kota’s mouth, wanting the pain.

“Do you mind?” Kota bit the skin under his arm, lapping at the

sting.

“Hell, no. Chomp away my big, bad wolf.”
Kota chuckled as he did just that. He nipped his way down Blair’s

side, lapping a trail back up. Kota leaned back down and bit Blair’s
hip, sucking up a mark on it. He trailed his tongue across his mate’s
abdomen as he bit the other, raising a matching mark on it as well.

Kota lapped at Blair’s cock, nipping his way down the shaft. It

was a beautiful cock, thick and long. He was definitely well-endowed.
Kota grabbed the prick, nipping his way back up to the head.

Kota stretched the eye open, licking at all the pre-come dripping

out. He took it in, sucking in a quick, bursting motion. Blair grabbed
his hair, pulling it rough as he snapped his hips, shoving his cock
further down Kota’s mouth. “Suck it, Dakota.”

Kota pulled at his balls, rolling them roughly in his hand. His

mate seemed to like a bit of pain, Kota would deliver. Running his
finger alongside the large cock, he moistened his finger, spearing it
quick and deep into his ass.

“Yes! More. Do it again.”
Kota pulled his finger all the way out, ramming two this time.

background image

Blair was going wild. He shoved his ass down hard on Kota’s hand,
begging him to make it pinch. Kota opened his fingers in a scissor-
like motion, stretching it hard and fast.

Kota pulled off his mate’s cock, pushing his legs into his chest.

He rimmed Blair’s hole once more with his fingers then thrust three
fingers in, fucking his pink rosette hard. Kota jetted them in and out,
giving no allowance. Blair was mewling and rocking his head back
and forth, yanking Kota’s hair in his grasp.

“I’m going to fuck you now, Blair. Are you ready?”
Blair nodded, still impaling himself on Kota’s fingers. Blair

whimpered when Kota snatched them out, reaching for the lube he
stashed in the side drawer. A little hope had never hurt.

Kota squirted the gel down Blair’s crack but didn’t lube his cock.

If his mate was into pain, he was going to be spoiled. Fate matched up
the right pair with this.

Kota slapped his ass. “Hold still. Don’t move until I slam into

you.” His mate began to shake with anticipation. If looks were
anything to go by, Blair was in his element, relishing what Kota was
offering.

Kota lined his cock up and rammed into him. Blair shouted his

name. Kota’s canines extended with the rough sex. He leaned his head
back, allowing full showing of his teeth.

“They’re beautiful. Bite me, Dakota.” Blair was pulling Dakota’s

by his hair, trying his best to bring those sharp canines closer.

Kota leaned down, running the tips along Blair’s nipples, nipping

at them. He broke skin in his play then lapped over the wounds,
sealing them closed. Next he nipped and broke skin on both upper
arms, licking at the tiny drops of crimson blood that swelled to the
surface then sealed them as well. Blair watched in fascination.

“Does it always seal shut when you lick it?”
“Yes, I have healing compounds in my saliva.” Kota bit again

then sealed the wound as his hips drove into Blair’s ass.

“Don’t. Let it bleed for a moment, please.”

background image

Sunshine’s Savior

37

Kota stared into Blair’s eyes, feeling the erotic wave wash over

his mate. Although they weren’t bonded yet, his mate was easy to
read at the moment.

Kota could feel how the bloodletting made Blair feel closer to

him. Giving a slight nod, Kota bit into his skin right above the nipple,
allowing the blood to well up. A tiny amount ran down the side of
Blair’s chest. He didn’t seal the wound, and instead he duplicated it
on the other side. Kota only allowed two open bites at a time, not
wanting harm to come to Blair.

It took a deep bond of trust for one person to allow another this

much control over their body. He repeated the biting and eventual
sealing all over his mate’s upper torso. Blair’s cock was so hard it
pulsed at his lower abdomen.

Kota sealed the last two wounds that had been dripping down his

chest, licking the crimson wine.

Leaning back, Kota grabbed Blair’s ankles and pulled his legs

apart, he rammed his cock harder into the tight, puckered hole,
gaining a shout from his mate. “Is it painful enough?”

“Yes!” Blair hissed out, pushing his hands into the wall above his

head.

“Do you accept me as your mate, Blair?” Kota thrust harder,

knocking him further up the bed.

“Yes, Dakota. Yes.”
Kota released his ankles and fell forward, striking. His canines

were embedded in the soft flesh between neck and shoulder. Blair
shouted, and his seed erupted, hitting his stomach, chest, and even
under his chin. He wrapped his legs back around Kota’s waist and
pushed his head harder into his neck.

Kota drew deep on the wound, tasting the exquisite wine going

down his throat. He could feel the ribbons of his soul unwinding and
wrapping around Blair’s, binding them. The two separate heartbeats
synchronized as one. The claiming was complete.

Kota pulled back to seal the wound, but Blair locked his hands on

background image

the back of Kota’s head, keeping him in place. He knew he had to let
go, or he would take too much. The bloodletting already had taken
place. Much more and his mate would be in danger.

“Not yet, it feels too good.”
Kota forced his head up, sealing the wound and exploding his

seed in his mate’s sheath. He howled his release, slamming Blair’s ass
so hard he knocked him up to the head of the bed and almost through
the wall. The bed groaned in protest with the combination of Kota’s
weight and the rough play. Blair shouted and came again, shoving
down hard on Kota’s steel shaft.

Kota slowed to a rocking rhythm, his lungs burning and his legs

shaking. He pulled Blair up in his arms, holding him tight. “Did I hurt
you?” He kissed the wound at his mate’s neck.

“No.” Blair panted. “It was perfect. I won’t be able to sit for a

while, and my body is all marked up, but it was perfect.” Blair rained
kisses all over Kota’s face.

Kota pulled him around his chest as he stood, carrying him to the

bathroom. He regulated the shower and stepped in, washing Blair
from head to toe. Once completed, his mate got out while Kota
finished his shower.

Kota stepped out of the shower. He watched from his peripheral

as Blair examined the bite wounds in the mirror, his face screwed up
in concentration.

“I can smell you thinking too hard, mate.” Kota chuckled while

walking across the room.

“Can you really?”
“No, but I can feel what you’re feeling if you’re close enough.

And you’re feeling shame. Why?” Kota pulled a pair of jeans on,
leaving the top button undone.

Blair shrugged at Kota’s question. He tucked his hair behind his

ear and lowered his eyes.

“Blair, what aren’t you supposed to do?” Kota gave him a gentle

scolding.

background image

39

Blair immediately raised his eyes. “I was just wondering what you

thought about me liking pain.”

“If you hadn’t noticed, I was enjoying giving it to you. We’re a

perfect match, sunshine. I think it’s sexy as hell. And you look
beautiful wearing my marks.” Dakota kissed the bite mark on his
neck. “Now, we need to get you some clothes. You’ll have to put the
other ones back on. Going downstairs naked isn’t an option. I would
have to rip a lot of eyes out.”

Blair laughed.
“Better. You have a gorgeous smile that I want to see a lot of.”

Kota swatted his mate’s ass then finished dressing.

Chapter Five

Blair’s got a boyfriend, Blair’s got a boyfriend. He felt giddy

inside. This hunk of a man was his.

They went to the clothing store downstairs, Dakota insisting he

get everything he needed for now. His mate even tossed another coat
up on the counter. Blair got a chance to see the price tag this time. He
wanted to kill that guy for making him ruin his first coat. Damn thing
wasn’t cheap. Blair remembered his money in the other one, feeling
uneasy about leaving it in the hotel room unprotected.

Blair stood there watching the woman behind the register batting

her eyes at his mate. She flirted and giggled, trying her best to snag
him. Bitch. There was about to be a cat fight in here because no one
messed with his wolf.

“Excuse me. Could you please stop flirting with my husband right

in front of me? It’s very rude and disrespectful.” Blair added a flip to
his hair for the queen bitch effect.

“I don’t see any rings.” She shot daggers at him. So, the poacher

had her claws out? Blair had a set of his own. And they were sharp.

“Oh, honey, we have rings. They’re called cock rings, something

you won’t get a chance to see.” He reached up, pulling Dakota down
to him, and deep throated his tongue right there in the store.

Dakota pulled Blair up against his body, deepening the kiss. He

better go along with this if he wants some more ass.

Breaking the kiss, Dakota handed over his credit card, never

looking away from Blair. Oh, he was good.

They exited the store with a pissy-ass clerk left standing behind

the register as they walked to the elevators.

background image

“Thanks.” Dakota pecked him on the lips.
“No problem. That cock belongs to me—and the hunk attached to

it.” Blair chuckled as the ding of the elevator sounded.

Blair changed into a clean outfit. He reached into the tattered

white coat and pulled the billfold out, handing it to Dakota.

“Why are you returning this, sunshine?” Dakota looked puzzled
“Because it would make me feel better, make me feel like my time

with you wasn’t bought. I don’t want to feel like a whore with you.”
Blair shoved it at Dakota, but his mate refused to take it. Blair tossed
it on the round table next to them, and a heavy thud sounded with its
landing.

“I don’t want to hear that word or any other degradation

referenced to you, even if it’s you saying them.” Dakota growled.
“You earned this by helping me in my search. It’s yours.”

“Please, Dakota. I don’t want it.” Blair begged softly. Was he

crazy? That was two grand he was tossing away. No. Giving the
money back made his time with Dakota seem like they were really a
couple, not a paid transaction. He reached in the nightstand drawer
and pulled the two one hundred dollar bills out, laying them on top of
the billfold.

Dakota pulled Blair in his arms, cupping his face, “If that’s what

you really want. I think no less of you for keeping it. Just so you
know.”

Blair wrapped his arms around his neck and held him, finally

feeling a sense of worth.

“If I’m going home with you, I need to stop at my apartment for a

few things. Are you sure it’s okay for me to live with you?”

Kota had called Alpha Maverick, telling him of his failed attempt

at his task. He had never failed in three centuries, and it pissed him
off. If he didn’t know any better, he would think Maverick sent him

on a dummy mission. Why? Why would he send him four states away
to find a person who didn’t exist?

“It’s fine, Blair. We can go over there now. Our flight leaves in

two hours. And, yes, it’s okay for you to live with me. My mate goes
where I go. Now gather your things so we can check out.” Kota
finished packing his duffle bag and zipped up his garment bag. He
tossed his toiletry bag inside then looked around to make sure he
didn’t miss anything.

They checked out and took a cab over to Blair’s apartment. Kota

was shocked, to say the least, when they walked in. His mate’s place
was clean, but sparse. He had one tiny mattress on the floor over in a
corner and a piece of cloth resembling a blanket folded neatly on top.
There were two crates filled with what looked to be memorabilia
items and a small radio sitting close to the door. That was it.

“Don’t mind the place. I haven’t been here to clean.” Blair

laughed nervously.

Kota kissed him softly on the lips, biting the lower one. “Get what

you need, sunshine. We have to catch our flight.” He watched as Blair
emptied the contents of the two crates and put them in a plastic bag.

“Just some junk from home. I’m ready.”
They returned the keys to the landlord and climbed back in the

waiting cab.

“Stop clawing your nail off. It’ll be fine. It’s just a house full of

wolves.” Kota chuckled, trying to ease his mate’s discomfort. They
had landed on time, and Kota had retrieved his truck from the airport
parking garage. It felt good to be going home, especially now that he
had his mate. He wouldn’t tell Blair, but he was nervous as well. Kota
worried about how his mate would feel living in a loud, chaotic home
with a bunch of grown pups running amuck. He also worried about
how the wolves would react to his mate. He knew they wouldn’t

disrespect him, but he wanted Blair to feel at home, comfortable.

They pulled into the gravel drive. Kota told Blair to leave his

things. He would have someone take it to their room. He took his
mate through a side entrance so Blair wouldn’t be overwhelmed by
his pack. There would be time for introductions, but right now he
wanted to see Maverick.

Kota led his mate down the hall and knocked on the office door.
“Come in,” Maverick yelled through the door.
“Wait right here for just a moment, sunshine.” Kota ran his

knuckles down his cheek. Blair nodded. Kota could tell his mate was
a nervous wreck.

“Hey, Maverick.” Kota didn’t go any farther than inside the door.

He didn’t want to leave his mate outside by himself.

“Good. A welcome face. Come in, my friend. Have a seat.” Kota

smiled at his longtime friend. He and Maverick had known each other
since they were pups. He thought of the six foot nine Alpha as more
of his best friend than anything else.

“Um, I have someone to introduce you to. Is that okay?” Kota

opened the door, waving for Blair to come in.

“Sure, you know it is.” Maverick stood, watching Kota.
Blair stepped in, coming right to his side. His mate fell back into

his habit of lowering his eyes and tucking his hair behind his ear as he
twisted his fingers together. Kota saw a look of shock on Maverick’s
face for a split second before it was masked.

“Alpha, this is Blair, my mate.” Kota touched the small of Blair’s

back, encouraging him to go to Maverick. His mate stepped forward.

Maverick extended his hand. “Nice to meet you, Blair. I’m

Maverick.”

His sunshine shook Maverick’s hand then quickly stepped back to

him. “Can I fill you in on everything in a little while? I want to
introduce him to the men.” Kota felt Blair shaking slightly. He took
his hand and twined their fingers together.

“Of course, Kota. Take your time.”

Kota led him to the den. Since Cecil’s arrival, everyone hung over

here. They stopped calling the place their Alpha’s house and renamed
it “The Den” for the room that saw the most action.

There was a huge flat panel television hanging on the wall to the

left with two brown suede sofas that sat in an L formation with a
poker table situated behind them, and a state of the art stereo system
and surround sound sitting on a glass stand under the television. Cecil
had added his touch with an Xbox 360 with all the accessories and
games imaginable. There was a pool table and a bar set up to the right
of the room with a dart board on the farthest wall. It felt just like
being in a tavern, only more comfortable.

“Well, look what the cat dragged in. A dog.” Great. Just who Kota

needed to see right about now, loudmouthed Remi. The guy had a
comment about everything. He was definitely outspoken, which was
something Kota didn’t want his mate to deal with right now.

“Hey to you, too, Remington.” Kota inclined his head. “This is my

mate, Blair.” Kota reached behind him and placed his hand on the
small of his mate’s back, bringing him forward.

“Hey, Blair, I’m Remi. Nice to meet you.”
Blair waved. “Hi.” He tucked his hair behind his ear, staring at the

floor. Kota whispered in his ear, “Remember what we talked about,
sunshine?” Blair nodded and raised his head, staring everyone in the
eye.

“Hey, handsome. I’m Jasper.”
Blair took a step back, giving Kota a nervous glance.
“He’s the queen around here. He means nothing by it, love.”

Dakota softly spoke to him.

Blair nodded and looked over at Jasper. “Hi, Jasper.”
“I’ll give you queen. Bite me, Kota.” Jasper stuck his tongue out.
Kota laughed. He knew wolves had exceptional hearing. He didn’t

care, as long as his mate was comfortable. Everyone else introduced
themselves. Blair took an instant liking to Cecil and Johnny. Kota had
to actually be introduced to Johnny. He had been gone while Hawk

played patty-cake. “Where is that big brute anyway?”

“Right here, old friend.” Hawk slapped his back as he shook his

hand.

“Congrats on your mate.”
“Same to you it seems. Hi. I’m Hawk.” Hawk extended his hand

to Blair, who hesitantly took it.

Hawk was an intimidating man. Blair thought Kota was, but

Hawk took the cake hands down. He tucked his hair behind his ear
and lowered his eyes. He felt Kota tap the small of his back, he raised
his head again.

“Cecil, Johnny, can you show Blair around? I need to talk to

Maverick.” Kota kissed his mate, running his finger along his jaw.

“Sure, Dakota. No prob.” Cecil was conspiring with Remi.
“Little shit.” Kota kissed Blair again then walked to Maverick’s

office.

He stretched out in the leather chair in front of the mahogany

desk, finally taking a deep breath. Part of his mind was worrying
about his mate. Was he doing okay? Was he scared? He knew he was
in good hands with the two pint-size mates, but he still worried
though. Kota was missing him already.

“So, you wanna tell me about this wild goose chase you sent me

on?”

Maverick chuckled.
So the bastard did send him on one. Why? Kota sat forward,

pissed.

“Figured me out, huh?” Maverick sat back, pulling on his soul

patch, watching Kota.

“Might I ask why I was sent on a dummy mission?”
“Still trying to figure it out myself. All I know is I had a dream

that you needed to go there. And before you ask, I started having them

background image

46

after I mated Cecil, and I don’t have a clue why.” Maverick stood and
walked over to the window, clasping his hands behind his back as he
stared out into the back garden.

“I had a dream that showed me you searching for someone. I saw

your mate, although I didn’t know who he was at the time. I knew the
dream was real just now when I met Blair. It was the strangest thing,
Kota. I saw exit signs telling me the city you were in, the hotel where
you stayed, and even the places you were searching. Somehow the
dream conveyed to me to not tell you and find a way to get you there.
I’m sorry, old friend. I never meant to deceive you.” Maverick was
still staring out of the window, as if the answer lay outside. He had a
faraway look.

How could Kota be mad? He had found his mate on this ghost

mission. He only wished Maverick had told him about the dream.
Searching all those dives had frustrated the shit out of him. Made him
think he was losing his touch. A thought occurred to him. He didn’t
know if he wanted to know the answer though.

“What else did this dream show you?” Did it show him how Blair

made a living? He wasn’t ashamed of his mate, but he didn’t want his
mate to become self-conscious that others knew. The guy already had
a rough road ahead of him with his self-esteem issues at the top of his
list.

“Anything else I was shown is no one else’s business but yours

and your mate’s.”

Well, hell. That answered his question now, didn’t it? He wanted

to ask Maverick another reason he had sought him out on his arrival
home. “He has a brother. I feel it best to bring him here…where it’s
safer for him. I can’t tell you why without breaking Blair’s
confidence, which I’m not willing to do. Will you help?”

Maverick turned from the window, a smile quirked his lip.
“About that—”
“Let me guess. You had a dream?”
Maverick gave him a full smile this time. Smug bastard.

“Do what you have to. Take two Sentries with you. You’ll need

them. Micah and Storm to be exact.” Kota gave Maverick a nod as a
knock sounded on the door.

“I swear I’m going to install a revolving door.” Maverick

mumbled then bellowed, “Come in.”

Hawk came in and sat on the leather sofa. “Glad to see you found

your mate, Kota. Maverick here tells me he dreamt it.”

Kota raised a brow at Maverick, pissed that he had lied to him

about confidentiality.

Maverick held up a hand, “Before you get all bent out of shape,

Kota, I only told him about the dreams, not the contents of it. It’s
nobody’s business why I sent you. Just like it’s nobody’s business
about your mission ahead of you and what that boy’s future is. Not
even yours. Just get him here.”

A knock sounded, and Maverick rolled his eyes. Before he could

yell for them to come in, Cecil opened the door and led Johnny over
to Hawk.

“Hawk, you need to calm Johnny down. Kota, go get your mate

from the kitchen. He needs you.”

Chapter Six

Kota shot out of Maverick’s office and down the hall to the

kitchen. Blair was sitting at the table with his hands balled into fists,
tears running down his face. Kota grabbed him from the chair and
pulled him in his arms.

“What’s wrong, sunshine? What happened?”
“If I ask you something, will you tell me the truth?” Blair wiped at

the tears in his eyes.

“Always. I will never lie to you. Now tell me what’s wrong?”

Kota had left his mate with Cecil and Johnny. Two harmless humans.
What could possibly have happened in a half hour while he was with
Maverick?

“Are those two little boys being forced to stay here? Is someone

hurting them?” Blair looked on the verge of crying again. What had
given his mate that idea? He knew for a fact that Maverick adored
Cecil and Cecil adored Maverick. He didn’t know anything about
Hawk and Johnny, but he was sure the same applied to them as well.

He sat down, pulling Blair onto his lap. “They aren’t little boys.

They’re grown men, sunshine, and I can tell you right now that those
two men and you are the safest people in this house. These wolves,
every last one of them, would not tolerate anyone of you three being
hurt, even by their own mate. They’re happy, baby. I promise.” Kota
kissed Blair while running his fingers through his silken hair.

“I just can’t imagine those two being with such powerful men.

They’re so little. Johnny seems so…innocent. Please tell me they’re
okay.” Blair cuddled into Kota’s lap, picking lint off of his shirt that
wasn’t there.

“I promise, sunshine. They’re okay.”

Dakota took Blair to their bedroom. As promised, his things were

sitting inside the door. He took a look around his new bedroom. It was
huge, unlike the closet he had lived in. The bed was centered in the
middle of the room, and sat high off the floor. A beautiful, thick black
and burgundy duvet spanned across the top with what looked to be a
thousand pillows. The guy liked his comfort.

Two large floor-to-ceiling windows adorned either side of the bed,

their thick drapery pulled to one side. There was a door to the left.
Must be the bathroom. Thick, plush carpeting lay under his feet. He
wanted to take his shoes off and squish his toes in it. Dakota took his
bag and set it on one of two dressers, opening a large hutch for his
clothes.

“I can get that.” Blair pulled his clothes out that Dakota had

bought him and hung them in the oak cabinet. This room was truly
beautiful, majestic. Blair noticed two overstuffed chairs sitting to the
right, inviting him to kick his feet up and snuggle down in its
welcoming comfort. He walked over and sank back. It was heaven.

Dakota chuckled. “Comfy?” He knelt at Blair’s feet, pulling his

legs up one at a time and removing his sneakers. His feet began to
tickle as his mate massaged them, stripping the socks off in the
process. Blair sat in awe of the apocalyptic warrior kneeling at his
feet. How had he gotten so lucky in his unlucky life? He was afraid to
go to sleep. Closing his eyes may end this hallucination, and Blair
wasn’t ready to give it up. Ever.

“Come try the bed. It’s quite comfy as well.”
Blair blushed, knowing full well Dakota had more in mind than

bouncing on the mattress. Well, that could be part of it. Blair giggled
to himself. He had to lift his leg high to even get into the damn thing.
Maybe he could get a step stool to tuck under the bed. It was a

thought.

“No, sunshine, you have to try it naked. Trust me. The experience

is well worth it.” His mate had a devilish gleam in his eye. Right.

With his clothes neatly folded on the dresser, he climbed back into

Dakota’s bed. It was comfortable as hell. “Oh, man. I don’t think I’ve
ever felt anything so awesome.” Blair rolled around the bed, enjoying
the way the mattress conformed to his body.

“Dakota, can you like, shape-shift or anything?” Blair sat on his

knees, excitement radiating through him.

“Yes. I become my Timber wolf form.”
“Can I see?”
Dakota stepped back, disrobing before swiftly changing into a

wolf.

“Holy shit!” Blair scrambled back. He hadn’t been prepared for a

creature the size of a fucking pony. He thought he would resemble a
grey wolf, like he had seen at the zoo. This…were-creature, was
incredible.

He watched the wolf pad away from the bed, sitting on his

haunches by the door.

Blair crawled back to the foot of the bed, scared as hell. “Is that

really you, Dakota?” The wolf nodded its massive head. “I

─I’m

scared, but I want to touch you.”

The wolf slowly rose, walking carefully back to him, his head

lowering. Blair reached a shaky hand out, running his fingertips
across soft fur. “Wow, your fur feels like a mink coat.” He hesitantly
slid from the bed, kneeling on the floor. The wolf lay at his feet,
sniffing his balls. “Hey, cut that out. I may like painful and weird sex,
but animals aren’t on my list of things to try.” The wolf licked them
then laid his head down on his paws. “Kinky bastard.”

He ran his hands down the spine and over the long tail, the wolf

lying still and allowing him to explore. Blair rubbed his belly, feeling
that the pelt was softest in that area. He picked one of the large paws
up, weighing it in his palm. “I’d hate to get swiped at by one of

background image

these.” He stood as he laid the paw down. “Thank you, Dakota, for
sharing that with me.”

His mate reappeared before his eyes. He didn’t think he would

ever get used to that. One minute he was lying on the carpet as a huge
wolf. The next he was just standing there naked. How’d he do it?
Who cares? Look at that drool-worthy body. Yum.

Blair dropped to his knees, taking the head directly into his mouth.

He had been dying to taste Dakota. The salty tang splashed on his
tongue, drawing a moan from Blair. There was nothing better than the
taste of man. The musky scent, strong firm body, and commanding
tone of his mate drove him to take him deeper. Blair swirled his
tongue around the head, dipping the tip into the slit and pulling the
honey out.

His free hand cupped Dakota’s balls, feeling the weight and

rolling them around like Chinese stress balls.

“Later.” Dakota pulled Blair up and tossed him onto the bed.

Dakota cupped his cheek and kissed him. “On your knees, pup.”

Blair complied, scooting back toward the edge.
Blair moaned as Dakota spread his ass cheeks, licking one long

line from balls to puckered hole. Blair whimpered when Dakota
nipped each butt cheek.

“Oh, fuck.” Blair tilted his other ass cheek to Dakota to be bitten

as well. When Dakota obliged, Blair lowered his head to the blanket
and rocked forward and back. The sensations running through him
were like an out of control fire, racing and licking at his nerve
endings, engulfing him in the inferno.

His cock was throbbing as the blood raced to fill it. It was

engorged and heavy. Dakota sealed the wounds, opening others as he
marked his back and ass. He dipped between Blair’s thighs and
punctured the flesh on both sides, lapping at his balls.

“Turn over, lie on your back and spread your legs.”
Blair scrambled to comply. He felt bad they were turning the

pretty duvet crimson but not bad enough to stop.

background image

52

Dakota sealed the wounds on his thighs and licked the heavy vein

on Blair’s cock, biting down on it.

“Fuck!” Blair screamed as hot ropes of seed shot out, hitting him

on his chest and under his chin, and his head thrashed from side to
side as he drew his knees up, legs falling to the side.

“That’s it, baby. Let it go. Feel.”
“Fuck me, Dakota.” Blair begged breathlessly. He felt slicked

fingers enter him, his mind a foggy mess. Dakota threw Blair’s legs
over his arms then sunk in deep. Blair had an urge to babble. Pulses of
eroticism coursed through him when Dakota began to bite him then
seal the wounds. His body became Dakota’s playground. Blair began
begging his wolf to make him come.

Dakota snapped his hips harder, pounding into Blair’s hole. Blair

came again, and Dakota joined him. His wolf fell over Blair and sank
his teeth in.

* * * *

“Do you think we should go see if he’s okay? Maybe he’s not mad

anymore.” Johnny sipped on his orange soda as he and Cecil climbed
the stairs.

Before Cecil could stop him, Johnny opened the bedroom door

and ran in.

“I’m, uh, I’m—”
“Get out!” Blair grabbed for a shirt, but it was too late. Cecil and

Johnny had seen all of Kota’s marks covering his entire upper torso.

“What the fuck?” Cecil ignored Blair’s outburst and stepped

further in, watching Blair put on his shirt, covering his patchwork of
bite marks. “Is he hurting you, Blair?”

“Mates aren’t supposed to hurt each other, Cecil.” Johnny

whimpered.

“He’s not hurting me. Please, leave.” Blair stormed into the

bathroom and slammed the door.

background image

53

“Come on, buddy. I think Blair wants to be alone.” Cecil pulled

Johnny from the room, taking him straight to Maverick’s office. He
walked in to see Hawk and Kota talking with his mate.

“Maverick, can I please speak to you in private?” Cecil shot Kota

a stare, nervous to be in the same room with him. The wolf was huge.
How could he use that strength against his mate?

“Sure, baby. If you guys will excuse me. I won’t be but a

moment.” Maverick ushered everyone out, and Cecil held Johnny’s
hand to keep him there. Hawk tilted his head at Cecil but left with
Kota.

“What’s up, love?” Maverick took a seat behind his desk as Cecil

walked over with Johnny.

“Kota’s hurting Blair!” Johnny shouted before Cecil could

approach the subject delicately.

“Calm down, Johnny. Why would you say that?”
“’Cause we walked into his room, and he had a bunch of bites all

over his body. He tried to cover it and yelled at us to get out. He
locked himself in the bathroom. You have to do something,
Maverick.” Johnny was twisting his hands and rocking from foot to
foot.

Maverick looked over to his mate. Cecil nodded his agreement.
“Okay, I want you two to go in the kitchen and make yourselves

something to eat while I talk to Kota. Okay?”

They nodded in unison and left.
Kota and Hawk came back in, taking a seat.
“Hawk, would you mind giving me a moment with Kota?”
Hawk inclined his head and went in search of his mate.

* * * *

“What’s going on, Maverick?” Kota didn’t like the feeling he was

getting from everyone. Something was going on, and it wasn’t good.
Had Blair freaked out again? He didn’t think so. The little guys would

background image

have told him. Kota leaned forward on the couch, placing his elbows
on his knees, waiting for his Alpha to spill it.

“I need you to answer me honestly, Kota. Are you being rough

with your mate? Hurting him?” Maverick asked with a look of fury on
his face.

“Why would you even ask me something like that? Do you

honestly think I would harm my mate?” Kota couldn’t believe he was
having this conversation. He couldn’t understand why Maverick, his
best friend, would accuse him of something like that. He knew the
Alpha would kill anyone who abused a mate—all the warriors
would—but this wasn’t the case.

“He has multiple bite wounds covering him. So, I will ask you

again, are you hurting Blair?”

“It’s none of your damn business what goes on between me and

my mate.” Kota stood, matching his Alpha’s stance, anger etched on
his face.

“Don’t force my hand, Kota. I’m only looking out for his well-

being. Sit. Talk to me.” Maverick and Kota sat back down, Kota
sighing heavily.

“He has a…thing for pain. Biting in particular. It’s something my

mate wants and craves.” Kota was cursing himself for betraying
Blair’s trust. If his mate knew he was blabbing their intimate business,
he would be mortified.

“Really? Uh, okay. I wasn’t expecting that.” Maverick rubbed the

back of his neck, looking at Kota uneasily. “Is it safe for him?”

“It’s safe. I monitor him. I know what I’m doing. I would

appreciate you having a talk with your mate about keeping it quiet. I
don’t want Blair to feel embarrassed.” Kota stood, turning to
Maverick for an answer. Maverick inclined his head.

“Thanks.”
Kota ran into Hawk on his way to find Blair.
“Kota, wait.” Kota turned, placing his hand on the banister and

taking a deep breath. He really didn’t want to have this conversation.

background image

55

“Hawk, can this wait?”
“No. Johnny told me what happened. I had a talk with him about

not mentioning it to anyone.” Kota wasn’t expecting the
Commander’s discretion. He eyed him warily.

“What’s up with the understanding? Aren’t you going to ask me if

I’m hurting him? Everyone else seems to think so,” Kota bit out.

“When my mate told me what he saw, I knew. I know you’re not

hurting him. Just…be careful. It can get out of hand pretty fast when
sex is involved.” His Commander talked as if he had experience with
this. Maybe he did.

Kota nodded then headed upstairs.

Chapter Seven

Blair looked at the bite marks in the mirror. He traced a fingertip

over one of the healing wounds, his cock becoming half hard thinking
about the way Dakota had sank his teeth into him. Why did he like
this? Was he sick?

He had to be to enjoy pain the way he did. Blair remembered the

first time he had cut himself. It felt as though the pain was leaving
through the wound. The pressure relieved. He never let anyone else
know and never let a john do it. It was too personal, too intimate.

Blair shrugged his shirt up onto his shoulders and buttoned it.

Would Cecil and Johnny tell everyone? Would they stay away from
him now?

“Hey, stop thinking so hard.” Dakota came into the bathroom,

wrapping his arms around Blair from behind. “Heard you had
visitors.” His mate leaned in and whispered a kiss across the back of
Blair’s neck.

“Great, now everyone is going to know Blair is a sick freak.” He

tucked his hair behind his ear and ran his fingertips across the counter,
refusing to look up.

Dakota turned him around, tucking a knuckle under Blair’s chin to

make him look up, “Look at me, sunshine. You are not a freak. Let
me clue you in on something if you haven’t figured it out yet. I’m a
biter, have always been a biter, will always be a biter. What do you
think I would do with a timid mate in bed?”

Blair wanted to object, but he curled his lips in to silence himself.
“My cock is hard enough to pound nails right now just thinking

about sinking my teeth into you. I need a mate who can take the pain.

background image

Sunshine’s Savior

57

You’re that mate. Never be ashamed of what we share together.”
Dakota pointed to the bathroom door. “Do you think any those
Sentries downstairs are straitlaced in bed? Hell no. I’ve heard the
stories. What you like is mild compared to some of them kinky
bastards.”

Blair’s eyes dropped to the bulge in Dakota’s jeans, licking his

lips, looking back up at his mate from under his eyelashes. “You
know, I could help you with that.” Blair tried his best to smile
seductively.

“I bet you could.” Dakota’s voice dipped into a husky reply.
A knock sounded. “Fuck. Hold that thought.” Dakota leaned his

torso back so his upper half was sticking out of the bathroom door,
“Come in,” he yelled out.

“Uh, Maverick and I are taking our mates to the mall, and I

wanted to invite you and Blair.”

Blair waved his hands and shaking his head.
“Maybe some other time. Thanks for thinking of us.”
“Sure. Later.”
“What was that about, sunshine? Don’t you want to get to know

the people you’re living with?” His wolf placed him on the counter,
cupping his face, and leaning in for a kiss.

“I’m not ready to face those two little guys. I will, just not right

now.” Seems every time he got around them, something happened. He
would be happier right now just enjoying his mate.

“Whatever you want, sunshine.”
Blair’s wrapped his arms around as his mate lifted him from the

counter and set him on his feet. He remained quiet as Dakota
undressed him. They stepped into the shower. Dakota leaned him
back to wash his hair. Blair’s skin pimpled at the feelings of his
mate’s hands running through his long hair.

They weren’t even having sex, and Blair was about to come.

Kota had just finished toweling Blair off when someone was

banging on his door and shouting his name. He wrapped his waist and
crossed the room.

“What, Murdock?” Kota bit out.
The Sentry apologized for interrupting, “Maverick has called all

Sentries to the food court at the mall. Johnny’s missing.

“On my way.” Kota and Blair threw some clothes on and took off

down the steps. When they got outside, almost every truck was
missing. The gravel drive was always full. It was a sobering sight.

They got to the mall thirty minutes later, having broken a few

traffic laws to get there so quickly. Kota found Hawk and Maverick
standing off to the side, eyes searching the crowd. Hawk looked like
he was going to kill every person in the place. He could tell the
commander was fighting the change.

“We’ll find him. Don’t give up hope. He’s smart, Hawk.” Kota

asked Blair to stay with Cecil while they combed the mall and
surrounding area. They turned up nothing.

He heard Maverick shout, “Let’s go.” The warriors all headed for

the entrance.

They pulled in front of a house that Jasper had told him belonged

to Johnny’s brother, the kidnapper. This shit seemed to be getting
better and better. They stormed the place but found it empty. After
tearing it apart, they still found no clues. It was messed up
considering the wolves were superior trackers, but you can’t track
when not one clue was left to find.

The Commander was literally biting everyone’s heads off. What

could his men do? They all made themselves scarce while Hawk tore
the house apart screaming about his pretty baby. Hawk’s cell phone
rang.

Kota watched as the Commander fell to his knees, crying.

Blair followed as fourteen pissed off wolves stalked into the

hospital with a predatory gait. He and Cecil were in the middle. No
one was letting them out of their sight. The Sentries had gone into
lockdown mode as far as mates were concerned.

Maverick took care of talking with the nurse to find out where

Johnny was. Blair could see Hawk was a mess. The fierce warrior
walked in something resembling a zombie state. The nurse pointed
over to the elevator. They had to take all three of them to get upstairs.
Cecil surprised him by holding his hand, squeezing it tight.

Once again, Maverick handled the talking. When the nurse asked

if they were all Johnny’s family, Maverick confirmed that all of them
were. It made Blair feel like he actually belonged to this hodgepodge
of men. A warm feeling crept in.

Hawk was led to the back while everyone else had a seat. Dakota

pulled Blair into his lap, cuddling and rocking him. Blair knew Kota
was relieved that he was okay and with him. He couldn’t even begin
to imagine what Hawk was going through.

* * * *

Blair sat with Cecil in the den, trying to figure out how to play this

damn game. Frustrated, he tossed the controller to the floor. “I
officially suck at this.”

“Just gotta practice. At least you didn’t throw it at the television

like Maverick did when he got pissed.” Cecil was chuckling.

“Believe me, thought crossed my mind. I need a fat, greasy

burger. Is there a place in town?” Man, he could use some fries, too.
The thought had his mouth watering. A shake would hit the spot as
well.

“Yeah, let me see who can take us.”
Cecil came back frustrated, telling Blair that most of the Sentries

were either out on patrol or at the hospital, and those that were here

were, well, lazy bastards.

“Hey, Blair? How against grand theft auto are you?” Cecil

checked around him to see who was listening. It made Blair do the
same.

Blair quirked a brow up. “Uh, very? Why?”
“’Cause I was thinking about ‘borrowing’ someone’s auto to get

those burgers.” Cecil stood, creeping around the sofa, looking around
the corner and down the hall.

“Not really wanting it that bad, dude.” Was the little guy trying to

put him in jail? Or worse, deal with an irate wolf.

“Well, dude, I am. Let’s go.” He scooped a set of keys out of the

glass bowl as they crept out the front door. They had no clue whose
keys they snagged. Cecil hit the fob, and the truck at the end of the
row lit up.

* * * *

“Uh, Maverick, I think we need to move.” Storm walked into his

Alpha’s office, confused.

“Why would we have to do that, Storm?’”
“Because someone stole my truck.”

* * * *

“Hey, Blair, what’s that guy doing?” They had to pull ahead of the

drive thru window to wait on their order. Fresh fries were cooking.
Cecil watched as a Jamaican looking dude with the Rastafarian hat on
got out of his Hummer across the street and went into the restaurant.

Two cock diesel females soon followed. They wandered in for a

moment then came back out. Cecil watched as the three crossed the
street. Coming their way. They passed the driver’s window and
walked into the fast food place they were sitting at. The guy stayed
outside as the females went in.

background image

61

“Don’t know, but the guy seems to be staring at you.” Blair

watched with suspicion as the guy fiddled with his MP3 player,
cutting a glance at Cecil every few seconds.

“Just chill and don’t make eye contact.” Blair sat back, wishing

the damn food was brought out to them already. He had a feeling he
knew what the guy was, but he didn’t want to worry Cecil.

“Why’s he staring at me?” Cecil hissed out in a whisper. Both of

their windows were down.

The two females came back out. “Ain’t nothing happening in

there.” One of them told the Jamaican. They watched as the trio
crossed back across the street, the guy getting in the Hummer and the
chicks walking down the street, sashaying and waving at passing cars.

“Uh, Blair, are those hookers?”
“I think so, Cecil. Didn’t know your sleepy town had them.” Blair

shifted in his seat, extremely uncomfortable. This situation was
bringing back too many bad memories.

He knew Cecil knew nothing about his past, but he still felt shame

sitting next to the little guy. It felt as though he had a big neon sign
over his head pointing down at him blinking whore.

The Jamaican started the Hummer then backed up, pulling it from

the drive across the street to theirs. He parked to the right of their
truck, getting out. He leaned against the back of his vehicle, again
watching Cecil.

Shit. They had to get out of there. Just as the man stood straight,

heading right for them, a black Navigator pulled right in front of
them. The doors opened and two very pissed off looking men stepped
out. Oh, fuck. Cecil was about to get them killed.

Dakota and Maverick approached their windows.
“Get out,” the Alpha commanded Blair.
Blair slid out as Maverick took his place. Shooting a glance at the

Hummer, the guy was nowhere to be seen. Blair climbed into the
passenger side of the Navigator as Dakota climbed into the driver’s
seat.

Not a word was spoken as they drove home.

* * * *

Well, damn. He didn’t even get his burger and fries. Dakota

silently marched him straight upstairs.

“Take your clothes off.” Dakota directed. “Everything.”
“Man,” Blair bit out under his breath as he did what he was told.

Cecil owed him big time for this. Dakota looked like he could chew
nails. Wasn’t good at all. He’d take a horny wolf over a pissed off one
any day, but it looked like he was getting both right now.

“Lie on your back and put your hands above your head.” As Blair

did exactly that, Dakota went to his closet, coming back with two
belts. Oh, shit! Was he about to be beaten?

Dakota secured his wrists to the bed then pulled on them to make

sure they were tight. “Do they hurt?”

“Yes.”
“Good.”
Dakota reached down and pulled up one of Blair’s legs, his

canines extended, Blair’s cock slapped his lower stomach as it came
to life. Dakota grazed his calf, skating his teeth from ankle to knee,
sending goose bumps racing up to his cock.

“Bite me, please.” Blair whined in a sex-induced voice.
“If my mate wants to be a felon, he takes the punishment. No

biting.” Dakota nipped but didn’t break skin. Blair was going crazy,
he wanted his mate to sink his teeth in. No biting?

“Then I want a lawyer. I plead not guilty. Now bite me, dammit!”
Dakota just chuckled, continuing his nonaggressive assault. Blair

tried to push his leg into Dakota’s mouth and force him to break skin,
but Dakota was way ahead of him.

“Behave.”
“Where’s the fun in that? Please, mate, bite me.”
“No.”

background image

63

“Then untie me, tease. I can’t take this.”
“No.”
Blair began to struggle, pulling his arms down, trying to pull the

belts free, but Dakota had secured them firmly. They weren’t
budging. Dakota slapped his thigh hard, and Blair keened. It sounded
so needy.

“I said behave.” Dakota crossed his arms over his chest. “You do

understand what you did today put yourself and the Alpha’s mate at
risk not only for kidnapping, but any other potential threat?”

“No.” Blair’s voice was all innocent.
“Ah, my mate adds another charge. Lying.” Dakota reached for

the nightstand, grabbing a thin piece of twine and began to tie precise
knots around Blair’s cock and balls. “Now, you will not come until I
allow it.”

Dakota bit down hard into Blair’s thigh muscle, Blair screamed.

He could feel his balls swelling, and his cock was throbbing. Dakota
raised his head, reached across and bit into the other thigh.

“Please, oh, please. Let me come. I’ll promise anything you

want.” Blair knew he would give Dakota the moon if he would rip
that damn rope off of his cock. The pain sent him to new heights, but
he couldn’t find release. He would have to remember to steal another
car.

Dakota sealed the wounds and kissed his way up to Blair’s ass

crack then thrust Blair’s legs back and nipped his ass cheeks. Blair
was still begging.

Blair watched as Dakota stripped his clothes off and grabbed two

more belts. He tied them around Blair’s ankles and secured them to
the headboard as well. Blair felt like a human contortionist.

He watched as Dakota grabbed something pink out of the drawer

and the bottle of lube. He craned his neck to see, but with his legs
pulled over his head, it was impossible. Dakota climbed off the bed,
standing at his shoulder.

Dakota reached his right hand down and shoved something hard

background image

into Blair’s ass as he sank his teeth into Blair’s shoulder. Dakota
slammed the hard object in and out of his ass as he sucked at the
broken skin. Blair’s shouts bounced off the walls and rang with lust,
pain and pleasure seizing his body in a tight hold.

“Do you want to come?” Dakota pulled off of the flesh he had

been feasting on.

“Please,” Blair begged in a whispered croak.
Dakota pulled the object from his ass, tossing it aside. Blair

looked over to see a dildo. Dakota climbed to the end of the bed and
sank his cock in, placing his hands on the back of Blair’s thighs.
Dakota pounded into him at full throttle. Just when Blair thought he
would lose his mind from the all consuming lust, Dakota untied the
string. “Come.”

Blair erupted in a wail of screams, his hips slamming down on

Dakota’s cock.

Blair was in a daze. He shuddered as the last of his seed shot into

out. Dakota reached up and released the bondage. His wolf fell to his
side in exhaustion. Blair was too sore to move.

Chapter Eight

Blair walked into the kitchen to see Cecil standing by the fridge.

He grabbed the juice and walked to the cupboard. Blair watched as
Cecil walked strangely to the table. He smiled

“I see your mate punished you, too.”
“It was so worth it.” Cecil chuckled. “When do we go back out?”

* * * *

“I need you to promise me that you won’t go anywhere without a

wolf escort.” Kota pulled Blair in his arms, kissing him on his neck
and nipping his skin.

“I promise. You be careful. My dad is a one of a kind asshole.

Don’t expect him to just hand Oliver over to you. Do you have his
picture I gave you?”

“Yes.” Kota kissed the tip of his nose before he pulled away. He

reached into his leather and pulled out the small school photo Blair
had provided. Kota felt a protectiveness grip him at the sight of the
youthful smile in the picture. The boy had trust in his eyes and a
charming little grin on his face. To think his father may be molesting
him enraged Kota.

“I can handle anything your father tries. Behave. Love you.” Kota

left to retrieve a hurting young boy.

Blair and Cecil asked Evan to take them to the coffeehouse. Blair

needed to get his mind off of Dakota’s absence and seeing his brother
again. They had tried to talk Johnny into coming with them, but the
little guy hadn’t left his room since he got home from the hospital. To
top it all off, Remi was MIA.

“I’m not going to have to keep both eyes on you two, am I?” Evan

pulled the Navigator into the parking space in front of the café. Blair
noticed Evan scanning their surroundings before even allowing the
two to leave the interior of the vehicle. When he deemed it safe, Evan
hit the unlock button.

“We promise to behave.” Blair crossed his heart and held up a

scout’s honor hand. He didn’t want to piss off this massive wolf. The
guy looked like he breathed pain. Evan was six five with a chip on his
shoulder.

No, thanks.
As Evan escorted them in, Blair remembered his wallet in the

backseat. He promised Evan that he would run straight to the truck
and right back inside. With hesitation in his eyes, Evan nodded.

Just as Blair was closing the back door and turning to run into the

café, the Jamaican appeared at the back of the Navigator.

“So, rent boy, how about coming to work for me? Name’s

Jackson. I’m the Alpha of the Eastern Pack.” He gave Blair an evil
smile. Blair’s skin crawled at the thought of going anywhere near the
scumbag.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Blair was backing away

as Jackson stepped closer.

“I can spot a whore a mile away. I pay very well. Come on, you’re

a pro. I won’t have to teach you anything.” Jackson reached out for
Blair just as Evan came around the other side of the truck.

Cecil wrapped his arm around Blair’s waist as he pulled him back.

Blair was standing there stunned as the scene unfolded before him.
Why couldn’t he escape his past? Why was it following him when all
he wanted was a fresh start? It seemed running four states away to a
small, sleepy town wasn’t far enough. What would he have to do,

background image

Sunshine’s Savior

67

leave the planet? The hollow feeling that he’d carried for so long
began to creep back inside of him. No! He wouldn’t allow this jerk to
destroy what Dakota had worked so hard toward rebuilding inside of
Blair.

The mates watched as Evan wrapped his massive hand around the

wolf’s neck. “If we weren’t surrounded by human witnesses right
now, I would tear your fucking throat out. Get the hell out of here,
Jackson. Now.” Evan released the wolf. Blair watched as Jackson
adjusted his shirt, sneering at Blair before he sauntered off.

Even though Blair knew he no longer lived in that life, Jackson’s

words made him feel like a dirty whore all over again. He walked into
the café with his eyes on the floor, feeling worthless and degraded.

Cecil squeezed him around the waist. “Hey, Kota would kick your

butt if he saw you this way. Lift your head up. Be proud. Someone’s
opinion of you should only matter if you care about that person. Do
you care what that Jackson guy thinks?”

“Hell, no.” Blair pulled his head up and took a deep breath.

“Thanks, Cecil.”

“That’s what I’m here for. And you should know that no one in

our home cares about your past. Trust me.”

* * * *

Kota stared up at the house that had caused his mate years of pain.

It looked like any other ranch style home on the block. But looks were
deceiving. He sat there wondering how Blair looked as a young child
playing in the front yard. How he learned to ride his bike or came
home after school. His mate had grown up in this home.

Blair had told him of how his mother had run off with her boss.

Would his mate’s life have been different if she had stayed? Would
she have protected her little boys?

She had to have known the monster she was leaving them to.

There had to have been signs. Didn’t she care? Mothers were

background image

68

Lynn Hagen

supposed to protect their children from the evil that hid in closets and
under beds, not gift wrap the little tikes and hand them over.

An evil part of him hoped she was getting her just desserts. He

hoped she was living in a perpetual state of hell just as her sons had.
She would deserve no less than the sentence she ultimately handed
her sons.

Storm slapped Kota’s shoulder. “Isn’t that the kid?”
Kota had to look at the photo in his hand again. The teenager

walking up the sidewalk resembled the photo, slightly.

The one in the flesh wore black lipstick and black nail polish. His

ears were pierced from the top all the way to the lobe and a metal bar
pierced his bottom lip. He was wearing a black netted shirt and black
baggy jeans with chains hanging everywhere. Black combat boots
plodded up the walkway.

“I think that’s him.” Holy shit, what had happened to the boy

Blair fondly spoke of? Who was this kid? It didn’t matter. Oliver was
leaving with them today. “Let’s go.”

The three warriors exited the SUV rental. They descend upon the

sidewalk like Lucifer’s soldiers. An air of predatory darkness
surrounded them. All stood well over six four. Kota knocked on the
front door then stood back, his hands clasped in front of him,
shoulders straight back.

The door swung open. An aged man stood there gaping at them.

He had a sturdy build and arrogance about him. Kota disliked him
immediately.

“Can I help you?” he asked as he closed the door slightly.
Kota pushed his way in, knocking the man aside. “Where is

Oliver?”

“What the hell do you think you’re doing? Get out of my house at

once before I call the police.” The father tried to step in Kota’s path,
but Kota was having none of that. He knocked the guy onto the sofa,
growling at him. Micah headed down the hallway as Storm stood at
the door with his arms crossed over his chest.

background image

69

“Call them. I want to see you explain to them how you have been

molesting your son for many, many years. I have been sent by Blair to
rescue his brother from your sick fucking hands.” Kota took a step
toward the couch. “Deny it if you want. I will make sure Blair testifies
to your years of perversion.”

“Who are you?” the father asked in frightened awe.
“Someone who may let you live. Your best bet is to allow us to

walk out of here with Oliver and never contact them again.” Kota
leaned closer, his hair falling forward in a veil of menace as he
sneered. “Ever.”

Micah came back into the living room with a frightened Oliver at

his side. The guy had a backpack slung over his shoulder and was
staring at his father with revulsion. He spat in his father’s face then
walked away, heading out of the front door.

Kota growled one last time at the father. “If I ever see your face

again, I will make sure it’s in a coffin.” With that he turned and
disappeared.

* * * *

Blair looked up as a knock sounded on his bedroom door. Cecil

was standing there with a wide grin on his face.

“Kota called. He’s on his way back with Oliver. They should be

here any minute.”

Blair’s heart began to race. He followed Cecil down the stairs and

joined him in the den to await his brother’s arrival. How would Oliver
act? Would he hate him for not being there? Would he welcome Blair
with open arms? Had his father molested his brother with him not
there to protect him?

His mind was in a whirl of anxiety by the time the front door

opened and the four men walked in.

Blair stood, wiping his hands down the front of his jeans. He

spotted his brother and his jaw dropped. Oliver? No way. That

background image

70

Lynn Hagen

couldn’t be him. Could it? How had his little brother changed so
drastically in four months?

“Oliver.” Blair ran to him and embraced him in his arms. His

brother stood there stiffly, not returning the hug. After a moment,
Oliver pushed Blair away.

“Enough already. You a fag or something? Stop groping me.”
Blair’s face fell. Who the hell was this guy, and where was his

sweet little trusting brother? He stepped back, speechless.

Dakota wrapped Blair in his arms. Why was his brother acting this

way?

“Yeah, I see you are. Just don’t try that homo shit with me.”

Oliver crossed his arms over his chest and glared at Blair.

He felt as though his brother had just verbally slapped him. Blair

guessed he did. He fumbled for something to say, but words evaded
him. Wrapping his arms around his waist, Blair stepped back. This
wasn’t what he expected, not from Oliver. Where was all the hatred
coming from?

“Watch your tongue, young man. That’s my mate you’re speaking

to.” Dakota growled at his brother. He took a step toward Oliver.
Blair thought for sure Dakota was going to strangle him.

Micah stepped closer to his brother. What the—? Blair noticed the

protective way the wolf stood with Oliver. What was going on? A
light went on in his head. Mates.

With the way his brother was spewing venom, Micah didn’t have

a chance in hell of mating Oliver. Besides the fact his brother was
only seventeen, the situation was looking uglier by the moment.

“I hear you were a whore out on the streets. That true?” Oliver

spat out at Blair.

Micah grabbed Oliver out of the way as Dakota lunged for him.

Blair’s past came slamming back into his face at his brother’s words.
All the indecent things he had to do to survive were playing out in
slow motion right in front of his eyes.

“Get him the hell out of here, Micah, before I beat his ass into the

71

floor!” Dakota grabbed Blair, pulling him into his arms as he carried
him upstairs. Blair cried hysterically.

Dakota took him to their room, holding him tightly to his chest.

He couldn’t believe his brother had been so vicious. What was wrong
with that him? He remembered such a carefree young boy. Someone
who looked up to Blair. That guy downstairs was Satan’s spawn.

There was no way he could be around Oliver right now. Not until

he could deal with the belittlement his brother seemed to thrive on.

“I’m so sorry, sunshine.” Dakota rubbed his back. Blair began to

softly cry in his arms, not knowing what to say. He was still upset
about Jackson’s bullshit stunt. Was everyone out to remind him of his
sordid past? He would be damned if he allowed anyone else to hurt
him.

Blair put his arms around Dakota’s neck, “Seems no one will ever

let me forget, huh?”

“You have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. You did what

you had to do to survive. Hold your head up knowing you made it
through and also pulled your brother out as well. Give him time,
baby.” Dakota squeezed him close, letting Blair know how much he
loved him.

“Make love to me, Dakota. Show me I’m worth it.”
Blair stood and disrobed as Dakota unfastened his jeans and

pulled them down to his ankles. Blair grabbed the lube and stroked his
mate’s cock as he lubed it. He tossed the bottle down and climbed
into his wolf’s lap. God, how he loved Dakota.

Dakota held his cock as Blair impaled himself. Tears streamed

down his face as he began a slow rhythm. It wasn’t hard and painful
like he usually wanted. This was different. Sensual. Slow.

Dakota grabbed his hips as he slowly rocked in and out of him.

Dakota pulled back, leaving only the head in as Blair slid back down,
holding onto his neck and kissing him passionately.

“I love you, Dakota.”
“I love you, too, sunshine.” Dakota sank his canines into Blair’s

shoulder as Blair came, his seed erupting onto both their stomachs.

Dakota grunted as he closed the wound and thrust harder, crying

out his release.

Blair lay against him, still impaled. Taking comfort in the

connection, he didn’t want Dakota to pull out. Dakota was his knight
in shining armor. Blair smiled to himself at the cliché.

He knew that, whatever happened, whatever life threw at him,

Dakota would stand by him, love him, and cherish him.

Chapter Nine

“Hawk told me you weren’t hurting Blair,” Johnny stated as he

walked into the kitchen.

“Well, I’m glad that’s cleared up.” Kota didn’t care too much that

everyone knew about his mate now. What he and Blair did was no
one’s business. It just sucked that Blair was so embarrassed now. That
and the fact his brother had killed what little happiness Blair felt
toward seeing Oliver again.

“I’m going to bed. ’Night.” Johnny waved at Kota as he carried

his snacks away.

Little guy was adorable. Kota reminded himself that Johnny and

Cecil were only looking out for his mate. He appreciated the act but
still hated their knowledge.

Grabbing the fruit that Blair had sent him in the kitchen for, Kota

made his way up the steps to their bedroom. It had been one long ass
day.

He stopped halfway up and tilted his head. What was that noise?

Kota looked over his shoulder at the foyer and saw nothing. It was
late night, and most warriors and the three mates were in their rooms.
The six Sentries scheduled to patrol tonight were out in the forest. So
who was roaming around?

Kota sat the bowl on the steps, his eyes scanning the entire area in

front of him. The noise grew louder and, within seconds, wolves came
racing down the hallway from the direction of the kitchen where he
had just been.

These wolves weren’t familiar. Kota knew what all the warriors

looked like in their wolf form, and these beasts weren’t any of them.

background image

74

Lynn Hagen

The aggression they were showing didn’t bode well. The intruders
had their ears tucked back. Their teeth were bared and were snapping
at Kota.

Kota shifted, shredding his lounging pants as he took his Timber

wolf form. He was up against grey wolves. Although he was larger by
far, they had numbers. There seemed to be seven in all.

Kota threw his head back and howled, alerting the others as he

leapt from the stairs. All seven didn’t stick around. Four raced up the
steps. This couldn’t be happening. Kota broke from the fight he was
entangled in and raced after them. He had to get to Blair.

“Dakota!” His mate was screaming at the top of his lungs from the

direction of their bedroom.

Kota landed on all fours as he jumped through the open doorway.

His mate curled in a corner, cowering from the grey wolf snapping
and snarling at him.

The warrior didn’t stop to think. Kota jumped on the intruder’s

back, using his massive weight to bring the grey wolf down.

Blair scrambled for the bathroom, crawling on all fours until he

reached it and slammed the door closed. Kota was thankful his mate
used his brain in a crisis. It relieved him of having to keep an eye on
his mate while fighting.

How these seven got past the Sentries patrolling the estate was a

good question. Were the Sentries in the forest under attack as well?
Just how many had trespassed?

Kota could hear fighting out in the hallway as he clamped his jaw

down on the wolf under him. The grey wolf fought, scratching and
clawing to get free. Kota was not going to allow that. Not with his
mate right behind the bathroom door.

Kota applied pressure as the wolf under him gouged his

underbelly, the claws entering Kota’s skin. His wolf form shook his
head vigorously back and forth, trying to snap the grey wolf’s neck.

background image

Sunshine’s Savior

75

He growled loudly when he saw Blair peeking from the crack he

made in the door. Blair must have heard him because he quickly
closed it.

Kota was tired of playing around. He needed to see what was

going on outside in the hallway. Putting all his strength behind it,
Kota jerked the grey wolf’s neck, a snapping sound making the
intruder grow limp.

Not wanting to leave the carcass in the room with his mate, Kota

dragged it into the hallway with him. After dropping it, he yelped
back into the room. Blair stuck his head out of his hiding place, saw
the room was clear then raced across, slamming their bedroom door
shut.

Satisfied his mate was safe and secure, Kota turned his attention

to the others to see the wolves, Murdock and Ludo, fighting two grey
wolves in the hallway. The intruders seemed a little too determined.
What were they after?

Murdock and Ludo finally took down their opponents, and Kota

joined them as they hunted down the remaining threats.

All stilled when they heard nails clicking up the stairway. A growl

emanated down the hall that resembled booming thunder. Kota knew
that growl. There was only one wolf that sounded like a beast from
hell.

Maverick.
The Alpha slowly walked the hallway toward them. Kota could

actually hear floorboards protesting under the weight. Maverick’s
teeth were bared as he passed them by, never looking their way.

Maverick was on the hunt. Kota followed behind him, glancing

over his shoulder at his bedroom door, checking that it was still
closed.

There was another dead carcass when they cut a right around the

corner. Cody was snarling over it. That made four dead grey wolves.
Where were the other three?

background image

76

Lynn Hagen

Kota’s head snapped up when a grey wolf came flying out of

Commander Hawk’s bedroom, hitting the wall with a loud thud then
falling to the floor. Hawk leapt from his room, barking and snapping
at the lump that wasn’t moving. Kota knew how he felt.

Maverick’s head slowly turned around, staring directly at Kota. Or

he thought the Alpha was until Maverick bounded over him and back
around the corner. Kota and the others quickly followed. Kota came
around the corner in time to see Maverick jump onto a grey wolf, both
spiraling head over tail down the winding staircase.

His bowl of fruit went flying along with the wolves. Maverick

was too large a creature for the intruder, and the bottom post snapped
off as they slammed into it. Maverick opened his jaws, massive as
hell, Kota thought as he watched in a detached kind of awe as
Maverick snapped them down onto the grey wolf’s neck. Nearly
severing head from body with the size of the Alpha’s canines.

Maverick was the largest Timber wolf ever born. From snout to

tip, he was six feet long, and he weighed over three hundred pounds.
The grey wolf never had a chance.

Maverick shifted. “Kota, Hawk, go to your mates. Stay with them.

There’s one left, and he’s mine.”

Kota didn’t need to be told twice. He could hear Maverick telling

the warrior Tank to go to his mate Cecil and protect him with his life.

Maverick wasn’t playing around.
Kota shifted into his human form, banging on their bedroom door.

“Open up, it’s me, sunshine, now.”

The door flew open, and Blair fell into his arms. “What’s

happening? What’s going on? I thought it was you coming at the
door. I thought…” Blair burst out in tears as Kota picked his mate up
and carried him to one of the cushioned chairs.

“I have you, sunshine.” Blair curled into his arms, sobbing.

“You’re safe, baby.” Kota pulled his mate tight to his chest, circling
his arms around him. He laid his cheek on Blair’s head. His eyes
closed at the relief his mate was unharmed.

background image

Sunshine’s Savior

77

All he could see were images of the grey wolf having his helpless

mate cornered. Kota wanted to go back out into the hallway and kill
the son of a bitch again. He never again wanted to see that look of
terror on his mate’s face

Blair slid his arms around Kota’s neck, sniffling as he hugged

Kota tightly. “Is it over now?”

“No, there is one more. Maverick is on the hunt for him now. He

won’t be able to hide. Timber wolves are superior in their hearing and
tracking abilities. It’s only a matter of time before Maverick finds
him.”

“We have to hide, Kota.” His mate tried to squirm from his arms.
“No, we don’t. Sit still, sunshine.” The idea of Kota hiding was

absurd. Never in his life had he hidden from someone, and he wasn’t
starting now. Even with the need to protect his mate, Kota Amergan
was not tucking his tail.

Kota wrapped Blair’s hair in his hand as he tilted his mate’s head

back. Kota took possession of his mate’s mouth, and Blair responded
beautifully. His mate seemed to open up to him.

“Get your pants off.” Kota growled into Blair’s mouth. His mate

pushed up slightly as he tugged the material off. Blair kicked them to
the floor before straddling Kota’s lap, his knees on both sides of
Kota’s hips.

Kota moaned as Blair’s cock tapped his. He reached his large

hand down and circled them both. The pre-come dripping from his
mate’s cock alone was enough to lube them. He began a slow stroke.

“Faster, please. Fast and hard,” Blair begged.
If that’s what his mate wanted. Kota slid his left hand around

Blair, holding him as his mate leaned back. Kota pumped
maddeningly. Blair arched his back as Kota slid the pad of his thumb
over the slit in the crown of Blair’s cock.

“Kota.” Blair groaned as he leaned further back, his hair spanning

down to the floor. Kota wanted to eat him for breakfast he looked so
damn good.

Blair cried out as Kota watched his cock shoot up, seed splashing

his mate’s belly. Blair reached for him, digging his nails into Kota’s
arms as he rode out his orgasm.

Kota was there, throwing his head back as he yelled out Blair’s

name. His mate slammed forward, taking Kota’s mouth, kissing him
with fire and desperation.

“Kota,” Cody yelled from the other side of the bedroom door.
“Fuck, can’t have any peace around here.” Kota kept kissing his

mate, not caring about the warrior.

“Kota, you’re needed downstairs,” Cody yelled louder.
“You’re needed right here,” Blair whispered into Kota’s mouth,

running his tongue alone Kota’s lower lip. Blair nipped it, giving Kota
a devilish smile.

Kota yanked Blair’s hair roughly, biting into his shoulder. His

mate screamed, pushing his cock into Kota’s abdomen.

“Dammit, Kota, get out here! You’re Beta. You have to be there.”

Cody pounded his first on the bedroom door.

Blair grumbled something about moving across the country or

something like that. His mate slipped off of his lap, grabbing his
pajama bottoms as he stomped into the bathroom.

Kota wiped his abdomen with a T-shirt from the floor before

grabbing sweatpants from the dresser drawer.

Kota yanked the bedroom door open, pissed as hell. “Your timing

sucks, Cody.”

“You know I don’t mean to interrupt, but Maverick wants us all in

his office ten minutes ago.” Cody turned on his heel and walked off.

Kota looked over his shoulder as Blair emerged, minus the come

shots. They hadn’t even gotten to the good part yet. “Remind me to
harass Maverick the next time he runs into his bedroom with Cecil.”

He kissed Blair quickly, knowing if he stayed any longer the

entire pack would be knocking at his door.

His cock rock hard and his disposition soured, Kota begrudgingly

made his way to his Alpha’s office.

“So glad you could join us.” Maverick chuckled.
Kota didn’t find it funny.
“I want to find out exactly what Jackson is up to.” Maverick

leaned back, pulling at his soul patch, deep in thought.

Kota blew out a breath, resigning the rest of his night to the pack.

“Is it me or were they more determined than ever?”

“No, I was thinking the same thing,” Hawk answered.
“I think they were after the mates,” Cody offered.
“That would be my guess.” Maverick pinched the bridge of his

nose, exhaling loudly. “I need a few of you to go into Eastern pack
territory and find out what that psycho is up to.”

“I’ll go,” the warrior Tank offered. “I don’t much like the little

ones threatened like that. They better be glad my mate wasn’t here.”

“Or what? You’d let them ride you like a jungle gym?” Remi

burst out laughing.

“The kids like it,” Tank mumbled.
“Okay, can we get back on track here?” Maverick sat forward.

“Tank and Cody can go. I know a few trusted people there. Go to
them, find out exactly why Alpha Jackson—and I use the title
loosely—is after the mates.”

Kota got up to leave.
“Not so fast, Beta.”
Dammit. For once Kota thought he could get out of Maverick’s

office quickly. Just wasn’t his night.

Chapter Ten

Blair peeked out of the bedroom door before rushing down the

stairs and into Cecil’s bedroom. He didn’t bother knocking. He was
too frightened to care.

“Well, come on in, Blair.” Cecil was sitting over in the corner

with Johnny. They were playing cards. Blair thought it odd to be
doing that at a time like this, but whatever got you through it.

“You wanna play?” Johnny tossed his cards down. “We’re

playing poker.”

Blair sat down next to them, crossing his legs in front of him, his

eyebrow quirked at the cards on the floor. Johnny said they were
playing poker but from the looks of it, it seemed more like gin
rummy. Maybe the little guy was confused.

He tucked his hair behind his ear, looking down at his lap. The

image of Johnny’s face when he saw Blair’s body still made him
unsure of how these two felt about him. He looked up when Cecil
tapped his knee with his fist.

“It’s cool. We all have our thing. Yours is just…different.” Cecil

grinned widely.

Blair glanced over at the innocents of Johnny. “I’m not a freak,”

he mumbled.

“No one said you were.”
He wasn’t so sure he could believe Cecil. He felt like one. He just

didn’t want these two looking at him like one. The entire house knew
his sordid past. Knew he had been a whore. Blair often wondered if
some of the warriors didn’t look at him with an air of disgust.

At that moment he wished he could have had a normal life like the

two sitting with him. What would it have been like to grow up with a
mom? To be loved unconditionally without being molested? Guess it
wasn’t in the cards for him. Blair chuckled as he picked up a card. It
was the joker. How apropos.

“Gonna play?” Johnny picked all the cards up, trying his best to

shuffle them. More ended up on the floor than in his hands.

“I can do that,” Blair offered as he held his hand out.
“Okay. You have to deal seven cards each. If numbers or letters

match, you lay them down. But it has to be three of them.” Johnny
chatted away. Okay, so they weren’t playing poker.

“Hey, Johnny, tell Blair about your mom.” Cecil tapped Johnny’s

leg, nodding toward Blair.

“I don’t like talking about her.”
“Don’t force him, Cecil.” Blair turned to the blond-haired cutie.

“You don’t have to.”

“I used to be with this guy. His name was Jeremy. His way of

saying I love you was with his fist.”

Blair laid the cards down, giving Cecil his full attention.
“I thought that’s all I would ever know. I didn’t know how to get

out of it. Then Maverick came along. Boy, was that a shocker.” Cecil
laughed. “He pretty much told me I was his and that was that. I was
afraid to trust him, thought he would be just like Jeremy.”

“My momma was a drughead,” Johnny volunteered. “She always

left me and my brother alone. Then my brother got mean and, well…”
Johnny ran his fingertips over his cheek. A nasty scar ran under his
right eye. “I’m going to find Hawk.”

Blair watched him go. The guy seemed so sad. “What happened?”

Blair turned back around to Cecil.

“His brother used him as a punching bag and nearly killed him.

He hasn’t been the same since. The point I was trying to make was
that we all have issues. Yours is different, but not. Understand?”

Blair thought about it. Guess they didn’t have such normal lives

after all. He glanced up to see Dakota standing in the door. Blair
pushed up, making his way to his mate. “I love you, Dakota.”

“You’re everything to me, sunshine. Always remember that

you’re worth more to me than my own life.”

Well, hell. Blair was gonna cry like a blubbering idiot if his wolf

didn’t shut up. He folded himself into Dakota’s arms. “Can we go
upstairs?”

“You read my mind.”
Blair squealed when Dakota picked him up and tossed him over

his shoulder. “Impatient?”

“You think?” Dakota chuckled as he raced up the broken steps.

“Didn’t get your fruit.”

“What fruit?” Blair teased as his mate kicked the bedroom door

open. “Caveman.”

“Me want Blair. Get naked, have sex.”
Blair rolled his eyes at Dakota’s bad impression. His breath left

his lungs as Dakota dropped him on the bed. His pajama pants and T-
shirt were quickly pulled off. Dakota kicked his sweat pants to his
ankles then shook them the rest of the way off. His mate was a god.
That drool-worthy body had Blair’s cock slapping his stomach in zero
point five seconds.

Dakota’s canines emerged. Blair thought that was the sexiest shit

ever. His skin began to tingle with anticipation of being bitten.

Dakota skimmed his hands down Blair’s legs. “So smooth.” He

leaned forward, nipping at Blair’s thigh.

Blair spread his legs apart, his skin pimpling with goose bumps as

Dakota nipped the opposite one next. Blair ran his hands over his
mate’s head, his fingers running through his wolf’s gorgeous hair.
Dakota’s touch was better than anything Blair had ever experienced in
life. Better than chocolate, and it hit his system faster, too.

Blair’s head rolled from side to side as Dakota pushed his legs

back, biting into the backs of his thighs. A sound escaped him, unsure
if it was even human. Dakota had him losing his sanity fast.

He could feel the warm trail running down the backs of his thighs,

Dakota lapping to seal the wounds.

Blair’s hand skimmed down his own abdomen, reaching for his

cock.

“Don’t,” Dakota warned as he ran his tongue up the crease of

Blair’s ass. Hell, he wouldn’t need to pump his cock to get off.
Dakota’s tongue was going to do the job for him.

Blair’s need rose higher as Dakota’s tongue trailed up his cock,

his wolf’s lips suckling at the crown. Blair yanked at Dakota’s hair,
his primal need to come chasing away all thought, all reason.

His back arched when a finger breached him. Blair cried out, the

dual sensation rocking his world. He gasped when something hard
was pushed into him. “What are you doing down there?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know?” Dakota chuckled, leaned back and

stared Blair in his eyes. “Feel, baby.”

Blair’s whole body jumped up as his hole began to vibrate.

“Dakota. Oh, god, what is that?”

“A vibrating egg. You like?”
“Does a duck shit in the air?”
Dakota stilled, looking at Blair with questioning eyes, his wolf’s

expression comical.

“Hey, no one said I made sense when you do things like this to

me.” Blair’s fingers curled into the covers as the vibration sped up.
His mouth hung open, gasping for breath as Dakota bit into an ass
cheek. “Oh, god.” He yelled as come was forced from his balls, his
body jerking around with the sheer pleasure racing through him.

“That’s it, baby. Show me what I do to you.” Dakota slowed the

speed down until the vibrations stopped. Blair panted heavily. He
couldn’t remember his own name right now. Dakota was on a mission

to kill him with toys. He felt a pop then emptiness as the toy was
pulled from his ass.

Dakota’s tongue rimmed him then pushed its way in. At this rate,

Blair was going to be in a coma. He wrapped his long legs around his
mate’s shoulders as he pushed his ass harder onto the wonderful
appendage. “Fuck me, Dakota,” Blair whined.

A growl vibrated his ass as Dakota surfaced. Blair quickly

scrambled to his hands and knees as his mate flipped him over. “Oh,
shit.” Blair’s eyes bugged as Dakota pulled a set of handcuffs from
the side drawer. His mate reached above him, grabbing Blair’s wrists
one at a time and secured them to the headboard.

Blair yanked his arms, the feeling of steel making his very bones

ache for want. Dakota slapped a butt cheek, kneading the stinging
flesh then biting into it. Blair screamed. His blood felt as if it were on
fire. This was too much, too many sensations riding through his
nerves.

He yanked at the cuffs again, desperately wanting to touch Dakota

and craving the feeling of being secured all at once. His brain was
short circuiting.

When Dakota repeated the process on his other cheek, Blair lost it.

He came once again. His body convulsed as Dakota grabbed him
around the waist and blanketed his back.

“I got you, sunshine. I got you.” His mate kissed him down his

spine. Blair whimpered. He had hated sex until the warrior showed up
and showed him it didn’t have to be meaningless. Sex didn’t have to
be cold.

Blair’s body shook as Dakota thrust his lubed fingers into him.

His body was so boneless. All Blair could do was moan. His forehead
hit the mattress as Dakota entered him. If he came one more time, he
would be drained of all fluids. He could feel his skin shriveling
already.

“Can’t my mate handle a little loving?” Dakota teased as he kissed

Blair’s skin between each word.

“Little? If you keep this up, you’ll have to trade me in for a blue

light special.”

Dakota had the sexiest deep chuckle. His hands squeezed Blair’s

hips as he drove in. Blair’s shoulders collapsed when Dakota bit into
him. He could feel his heart racing, and his mouth was bone dry. He
cried out when Dakota grabbed his hair, yanking it back, the bite of
pleasure and pain sending him over the edge yet again as he shot into
the sheets. The only thing holding him up was his wolf.

“Mine.” Dakota growled as he sealed the wound.
“Yeah.” That was all Blair could manage to get out. His body felt

like a useless bag of bones. He was well loved tonight.

Dakota stiffened and howled out his release, wrapping himself

around Blair as spurts of seed bathed his channel.

His wrists were released, but Blair was only vaguely aware of it.
Dakota pulled him to his chest as they both fell fast asleep.

Kota tried hard to hide his smile as he helped his mate down the

stairs. Blair was limping today for some reason.

“No more loving for you, buddy,” his mate grumbled.
“If you say so.” Kota couldn’t hold it in, a laugh bubbled up. His

mate shot him a glare. “Sorry.”

“I just bet you are.”
Kota led Blair to the den. Why his sore-bottomed mate wanted to

come down here was beyond him. Blair had whined the whole time he
soaked in the tub. Kota wouldn’t tell him, but he felt proud. A man
always did. When your mate limped afterward, then you did it right.
That was his story, and he was sticking to it.

“Are you okay, Blair?” Johnny ran up to them, giving Kota the

evil eye.

“Don’t look at me. Blair threw a hip out playing leapfrog.”

background image

Johnny crossed his arms over his small chest, his look telling Kota

he didn’t believe him for one second.

“I’m fine.” Blair waved Kota off, taking a seat on the couch.
“I guess you don’t wanna play the Xbox.” Cecil laughed and

winked at Blair. “Maverick has had me limping before.”

Blair smacked Kota’s hand away when he tried to fluff the small

accent pillow behind him. Kota was really trying his best not to all-
out laugh. Little chuckles kept escaping though.

“Tank and Cody are back. No luck tracking the elusive and

psychotic Jackson down.” Hawk informed Kota.

“He’ll slip up. We’ll get him.” Kota wasn’t sure if he was

reassuring his Commander or himself. All he knew was that no one
was getting near his mate again. It had scared a hundred years off of
him.

“Playing that homo crap, I see.”
Kota’s head snapped around to see Oliver standing in the

doorway.

“Watch your tongue, young man. That’s your own brother you’re

speaking to.” Kota growled at the pup, taking a step toward the young
man. Maybe he could lightly throttle him.

Oliver flipped him off.
Micah grabbed Oliver out of the way as Kota lunged for him. Kid

or not, Kota was going to teach the brat some manners.

The warrior Micah hauled Oliver from his feet, carrying him up

the stairs.

“Are you okay, sunshine?”
His mate sighed. “Yeah, seems some things you can’t run far

enough from.” Blair shook his head. “I know what I did was out of
survival. I have to live with that. What worries me is my brother.
Whatever demons are chasing him, he won’t be able to run far enough
either. He’ll face them. I have faith in him.

* * * *

Micah yanked Oliver’s arm as he pulled him into his bedroom.

The boy had struggled the whole way up the stairs, his defiance
unbelievable. This young man was fighting the very people trying to
help him. Micah tried his best to understand what Oliver was going
through and give him some leeway, but to be so blatantly cruel was
wrong.

“This is where you will be sleeping.” He pointed to the adjoining

bedroom. “I suggest you watch your tongue around here.”

“Screw you. You aren’t my father.” Oliver snatched his arm from

Micah’s grasp.

“You’re in a house full of men who won’t tolerate your attitude

and behavior, so until you can adopt a decent manner, you are to stay
in our room.” Micah growled at him.

He couldn’t believe his mate had attacked his brother like that.

Micah heaved a heavy sigh, thinking of the long road his mate and he
had ahead of them in battling Oliver’s demons.
