ARE FRIENDS THE NEW FAMILY?

New research shows that only one in four people in
Britain today live in two-parent families with a mother,
father, and children. One in three people live alone.
However, loneliness does not seem to be a problem for
people who live alone. Recent interviews with people
between the ages of 25 – 60 who do not live in a
traditional family showed that friendship is becoming
more and more important. Many people in their
twenties said their friends were as important to them as
their relatives. They also expected their friendships (but
not their relationships) to last for life.

Surprisingly, the average Briton has fourteen close
friends, although one in six people do not have a best
friend. The majority of people who have best friends see
them once a week or more. Nowadays, people find it
easier to stay in contact with a large group of friends by
e-mail and mobile phone.

Although we spend more time with friends, family is still
important, especially when life is difficult. When people
are ill or need money, most of them call a relative rather
than a friend.

FACTS FOR THE TRAVELLER

Nauru is a tiny island in the South Pacific Ocean. It is
41 kilometres south of the equator and is nearly 4,000
kilometres north-east of Sydney, Australia. It measures
21 square kilometres. When it gained independence in
1968, it became the smallest independent country in the
world. Imagine seven New York City Central Parks and
put them in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and you’ll
have a good idea of its size.

Nauru’s biggest city is Yaren, but there is no capital city.
Industry has destroyed much of the natural beauty of
the island. However, there are some good beaches for
swimming and there is good diving and fishing around
the island. It isn’t a good idea to visit Nauru between
November and February in the rainy season, when
there are often tropical storms.

Around 12,000 people live on the island and the
islanders speak Nauruan, a unique Pacific language.
English is the official language used for government and
business.

A DREAM COME TRUE

Rebecca Harris – art director and Arctic adventurer
A
On May 12, 2003, a dream came true for Rebecca
Harris. After 18 days (and more than 170 miles)
walking across Northern Canada, Rebecca – and her
team of seven explorers – celebrated one of the most
important events in Arctic history.

B In 1845, Sir John Franklin went off to discover the
North West Passage. This was an important trade route
that would join the Atlantic to the Pacific. He started his
journey with two ships and 129 crew. Sir John, his ships,
and every member of the crew disappeared.

C His wife, Lady Jane Franklin, decided to look for
him. She couldn’t go herself, so over the next eleven
years she organized more than 30 expeditions to find
him. These expeditions resulted in the mapping of the
Arctic region. Her love for her husband, and efforts to
bring him back, are in her diaries and letters that she
wrote to Sir John, but he never received.

D It was Lady Jane’s words which made Rebecca
Harris decide to follow Sir John’s last steps. ‘I find this
woman’s love for her husband incredible,’ says Rebecca.
‘Her letters to Sir John are heart-breaking and it was a
dream come true for me to make this journey in their
memory.’

Reading

You are going to read an article. For each question 1–5,
circle the answer (A or B) which you think fits best
according to the text.

Differences in wealth and social status can affect your
health and how long you live, a 25-year British research
programme has discovered. Similar results have been
found in separate research in India, Japan, Russia, and
America. We already know that richer people live longer
and healthier lives than poor people. However, the new
research shows that people with higher social status are
probably healthier too.

Even small differences can affect how long you live. For
example, if you compare two educated people, both in
professional jobs, the person with the better job and
qualifications will probably live longer. The research also
shows that if you own a house with four bedrooms, rather
than one with three bedrooms, and have a large garden,
then you will live a longer life.

The research was done by Sir Michael Marmot, who has
written a book called Status Syndrome. In his book, he
explains that as social status improves, people have more
power over how they work and live. He says that this is
very important for health.

First read through – encourage
students to 'go with the flow'
and write down as much as
they can, leaving spaces
where necessary.

Second read through – guide
students to fill in the words they
missed the first time.

At the end, ask students to go over and
check their work carefully for grammar,
spelling, and overall meaning.

All students will start with 10 marks. For
every mistake, marks are subtracted, i.e. 1
mark is subtracted for every grammar /
wrong word / missing word mistake, and
half a mark for every spelling mistake.
