Origin
Clavicular portion: anterior surface of the
sternal one half of the clavicle
Sternocostal portion: anterior surface of
the sternum, sternocostal cartilage of ribs
1-7, aponeurosis of the external oblique
muscle
Insertion
Crest of the greater tubercle of the
humerus
The clavicular fibers are more anterior and
caudal on the crest than the sternocostal
fibers which twist on themselves and are
more posterior and cranial
Actions
With the origin fixed, the entire muscle
adducts and medially rotates the humerus.
With the insertion fixed, elevates the
thorax as in forced inspiration; supports
the body during parallel bar work or
walking with crutches
