Origin
ventral surfaces of the transverse
processes of lumbar vertebrae, sides of
the bodies and corresponding
intervertebral discs of the last thoracic and
all lumbar vertebrae
Insertion
Lessor trochanter of the femur with the
iliacus combined to form the iliopsoas
muscle group
Actions
With the origin (proximal attachment)
fixed: iliopsoas flexes the hip joint by
flexing the femur as in a supine straight
leg raise; may assist in lateral rotation and
abduction of the hip joint.
With the insertion fixed and acting
bilaterally: iliopsoas flexes the hip joint by
flexing the trunk on the femur as in the sit-
up exercise.
With the insrtion fixed and acting
bilaterally: psoas major will increase the
lumbar lordosis; acting unilaterally, assists
in lateral flexion of the trunk toward the
same side.
Nerve
Lumbar plexus (L1-4 with primary L2, L3)
