THE GREAT DRIKUNG PHOWA
THROUGH WHICH ONE CAN ATTAIN ENLIGHTENMENT
WITHOUT MEDITATION.
TERMA REVELATION OF NYIDA SANGYE.
Refuge Visualization: Visualize Buddha Amitabha as one with your Root Master seated in front of
you in full lotus posture on a moon, sun and five-coloured lotus cushion upon a precious jewel throne which
is supported by eight splendid peacocks. His body is ruby-red, radiating as if a thousand suns were shining
at once. He is dressed in the three Dharma robes, his hands are resting in the mudra of meditative equipoise,
holding a begging bowl filled with primordial wisdom-nectar. Surrounding him are all the Lineage Masters
floating on rainbow clouds. With this visualization recite the following prayers with fervent devotion
requesting their blessings.
Phowa Visualization: Instantly arise as Vajrayogini in Dewa Chen, her body is red in colour with
two faces: one red and graceful looking with hair loosely knotted on top and adorned by a crown of five
dried skulls, with three eyes embracing the three times’ boundless expanse; and one black above the right
ear of the former, being of a grunting sow, symbolizing Dharmakaya. Her right hand is holding a hooked
knife up to the sky and her left hand is holding a kapala filled with intoxicating red wisdom-nectar at the
level of her heart. In her left arm-bent leans a khatvanga, symbolizing Buddha Chakrasamvara. Her right
leg is bent in the dancing-yogini posture and her left leg is standing upon a yellow corpse of ignorance.
Her body is naked and adorned with a necklace of freshly cut heads and many skillfully carved bone
ornaments. Clearly visible yet without substance like a rainbow, her body is empty yet radiant. Inside runs
the central channel straight like an arrow with the thickness of a small finger and inside empty, open at the
Brahma-apperture and closed at the secret place. It is outside blue and inside red like coloured glass. At
heart level rests a four-petalled red lotus flower on which anthers sits the essence of one’s consciousness in
the form of a light-red bindu, the size of a pea, brightly radiating and vibrating, almost jumping up. Upon
the opening at the crown rest Buddha Amitabha’s two big toes, closing the central channel there. Buddha
Amitabha is inseparably one with your Root Lama. He sits in the Buddha Maitreya-posture and above him
are all the Phowa-Lineage Masters seated one above the other on multicoloured lotus cushions.– Keep this
visualization clear while reciting the phowa-lineage prayers.
Do long phowa-lineage prayer once and then three par-chogs with each seven HIK’s and one
descending GA. Then do the short phowa-lineage prayer two times and in between and after again three
par-chogs with each seven HIK’s and one descending GA.
After the third par-chog dissolve the visualization by all the Lineage Masters melting into light and
dissolving into Buddha Amitabha who himself melts into light and dissolves into yourself as Vajrayogini
who instantly becomes Buddha Amitayus. In his heart-center stands the red syllable HRIH surrounded by
the red mantra syllables. The HRIH stands on a sun-disc and on its top rests a fullmoon-disc (the size of a
flattened mustard seed). Buddha Amitayus is adorned with all the thirteen Sambhogakaya-ornaments, and
he is holding a golden vase filled with longlife-nectar. Thus radiate with vajra pride. (Recite: Jig Ten Dren
Pai Tso Wo Tshe Pag Med...)
Then do long and short mantras many times while five-coloured light rays from the red heart-center-
syllable HRIH and the clockwise circling mantra syllables (they are readable from the outside) invite with
auspicious offerings the Buddhas’ and Bodhisattvas’ blessing from the ten directions of their pure Buddha-
Fields. In return come countless radiant Buddha Amitayus bodies, some as big as mountains and some as
small as dust-particles, gently falling upon you like snowflakes melting into yourself as Buddha Amitayus.
Thus blessed, radiate even stronger out into the six samsaric realms, melting all the beings’ ignorance and
thereby transforming their ordinary gross conceptions of their realms and of their bodies into the subtle
perception of their realm being the perfectly pure land of Dewa Chen and their bodies being Buddha
Amitayus. Thus liberated into wisdom-joy they are all reciting with you, praising the unborn suchness of
immortality.
Then dissolve the six realms’ place as Dewa Chen into its beings as Amitayus, these melting into
yourself as Amitayus. Then the upper and lower part of the body (including lotus and fullmoon seat) dissolve
gradually into its center, into the red syllable HRIH which also gradually dissolves up to the tip of the nanda
as small as a hundredth horsetail-hair, dissolving into primordial awareness, boundless dimension. Rest
some time in this state.
Then again arising as Buddha Amitayus in Dewa Chen (while reciting Ge Wa Di Yi Nyur Du Dag...)
with all the six realms’ beings as Buddha Amitayus. One cubit above your head is seated Buddha Amitabha
in full lotus posture with all the Phowa-Lineage Masters surrounding him. With this visualization conclude
the session by dedicating all the merit accumulated through this practice to all sentient beings to thereby be
released into joyous awareness.
