adaptation noun [count]
a film or TV programme made from a book or play
banker noun [count]
someone who has an important position in a bank
baroness noun [count]
a woman who is a member of the nobility (highest
social class)
blind adjective
unable to see. Some people think that this word is
offensive and prefer to use the expression visually
impaired - opposite SIGHTED:
Blind and sighted children attend the same school.
break out [phrasal verb]
if something bad such as a war, fire, or disease
breaks out, it starts
colon noun [count]
the lower part of your bowels
custody noun [uncount]
the protection or care of someone or something,
especially given by a court:
The father was given custody of the children.
devote verb
devote something to something
to spend a lot of time or effort doing something:
He's devoted most of his time to his painting.
diagnose verb [transitive]
to find out what physical or mental problem
someone has by examining them:
Eva's been diagnosed with cancer.
dignity noun [uncount]
calm behaviour that makes people respect you:
She faced her death with dignity.
epic noun [count]
a long book, poem, or film that contains a lot of
exciting events
famine noun [count or uncount]
a serious lack of food that causes many people to
become ill or to die
graceful adjective
a graceful shape or object is attractive
icon noun [count]
someone who is very famous and who people think
represents a particular idea
lifelong adjective
continuing all through your life:
a lifelong friendship
mourn verb [intransitive or transitive]
to feel extremely sad because someone has died
nominate verb [transitive]
to officially suggest that someone should be given
a job, or that someone or something should receive
a prize
ravage verb [transitive]
to destroy something, or to damage it very badly
reputation noun [count or uncount]
the opinion people have about how good or bad
someone or something is:
Our university has an international reputation as a
centre of excellence.
role noun [count]
the character that is played by a particular actor in
a film or play:
Who is playing the role of Hamlet?
scholarship noun [count]
an amount of money that an organization gives to
someone so that they can study at a particular
school or university:
Sophie was awarded a scholarship to attend
Boston University.
terrorize verb [transitive]
to frighten someone by threatening them or by
using violence
