Problem 

Service is aware of an issue, identified from the field, on the GSM V188 and V220. 
Some units, returned with customer complaints of “No Turn On” or “No/Intermittent Main 
Display” were found to be caused by poor connection between the Display Flex and the 
PCB Display connector. Analysis revealed, this issue is caused by residue left on 
Display Flex connector during brushing process. See Figures 1 and 2 below for

Solution                        

MFS, the Flex supplier implemented the following corrective actions from March 28, 
2005 and confirmed 0 DPPM after the implementation date. 

1.  Stop brushing process to remove flex residue from March 28, 2005 
2.  Change the cleaning solution on an hourly basis instead every shift. 
3.  Inspect 100% connector pin after post clean under magnifying scope.

Field Service Action 

Customer Returns: 
When servicing any “No Turn On” or “No/Intermittent Main Display” GSM V188 or V220 
customer returns, with a Month of Manufacturer of April 2005 or earlier: 

1.  Power up the phone and verify the following symptoms: PCB current draw is 

normal but the flip assembly does not power up (No Display). 

a.  If the unit PCB turns on and draws normal current but shows 

no/intermittent Display symptoms then, disassemble the housing 

b.  Detach the Display Flex from the PCB Display connector 
c.  Clean the Display Flex and PCB Display connector using approved 

cleaning procedures 

d.  Re-inspect connector under magnification to ensure pins are free from all 

contaminants.  

2.  Reassemble the unit, and verify that customer complaint is fixed 
3.  If the unit displays the original failure symptom after cleaning the Display Flex 

and PCB Display connector, then follow normal troubleshooting and repair 
techniques to repair the unit per the customer complaint. 

Note: Reseating or disconnecting/reconnecting the connector may temporarily  
recover this failure mode, but failure has the potential to reoccur over-time. 
 

 

Call Center Action: 

When responding to customer inquires on the GSM V188/220 product, with various 
customer complaints including “No Turn On” or “No/Intermittent Main Display”, please 
direct the customer to have their phone serviced per this FSB. 
 

Service Inventory: 

Prior to use, make sure to clean with an approved cleaning method the Display Flex 
connector on the Flex assembly manufactured before month of April 2005
