Cat in the Hat Modifications

Materials Needed

Black Worsted

White Worsted

Red Worsted

White Pipsqueak

Two 1/2” black buttons for eyes

J Hook (for stocking)

H Hook (for features)

Hung By The Fire With Care Stocking Pattern

Abbreviations

Sc- single crochet

Hdc- half double crochet

Hdc2tog- hdc decrease over 2 stitches

Hdc3tog- hdc decrease over 3 stitches

Dc- double crochet

St- stitch

Ch- chain

Sk- skip

Ss- slip stitch

To start, work the toe, heel and body of stocking in all black. Fasten off with black and continue on to
the following cuff instructions.

Cuff

Turn you work so that the right side is on the inside of your stocking. With J hook, attach red to any
stitch in the back of your stocking and ch 1

Round 1 sc in each st around, join, ch 1

Round 2 hdc in each st until you reach where the stitch aligned with the heel, ch 20, ss in same st and
continue to hdc around, join (ch 20 will for your look to hang you stocking. Keep this on the INSIDE of
your stocking)

Round 3-4 hdc in each st around, join, ch 1

Change to White

Round 4-7 hdc in each st around, join, ch 1

Change to Red

Round 8-10 hdc in each st around, join, ch 1

Change to White

Round 11-13 hdc in each st around, join, ch 1

Change to Red

Round 14-16 hdc in each st around, join, ch 1

Fasten off and fold cuff down so the first red stripe worked is showing on top. Join white in the FRONT
LOOP ONLY of the last st worked with an H HOOK, ch 1 and continue to the following instructions

Round 1 in FRONT LOOP ONLY, *sc 4, 2 sc in next st* around, join, ch 1

Round 2-3 *sc 4, 2 sc in next st* around, join, ch 1

Round 4-5 sc in each st around, join, ch 1

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Bowtie (make 2)

With H Hook and Red (double stranded) ch 4

Row 2 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn

Row 3 sc, 2 sc in next, sc, ch 1, turn

Row 4 2 sc in 1

Row 5-7 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn

Row 8 sc 2, 2 sc in next 2 st, sc last 2, ch 1, turn

Row 9 sk 1

fasten off, weave in ends

Whipstitch the 2 short ends together of both pieces to for a “bow”

Bowtie Centerpiece

With H Hook and Red (double stranded) ch 4

Row 1 sc in 2

ch from hook and next 2, ch 1, turn

Row 2-14 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn

Row 15 sc, 2 sc in next, sc, ch 1, turn

Row 16 2 sc in 1

st, sc next 2, 2 sc in last, ch 1, turn

Row 17-18 sc in each st across, ch 1, turn

Row 19 sc 2, 2 sc in next 2 st, sc last 2, ch 1, turn

Row 20 sk 1

st, work 4 dc in next, sk next st, ss in next, sk next st, work 4 dc in next, sk next st, ss in last,

fasten off, weave in ends

Wrap the skinny end of piece around the center of the bow you made previously and sew into place.
This makes the 3

rd

section of the bowtie. Leave a tail for sewing to stocking.

Muzzle

With H hook and Pipsqueak, ch 5

Round 1 sc in 2

nd

ch from hook and next 2, work 3 sc in last, working other side of ch, sc next 2, work 2

sc in last, join to starting sc, ch 1

Round 2 sc 4, 2sc in next 2, sc next 4, 2 sc in last, join, ch 1

Round 3 sc 6, work 3 sc in next, sc next 6, 3 sc in last, join, ch 1

Round 4 hdc in each st around, fasten off, leaving tail for sewing to stocking

Nose

With Black and H hook, make a magic circle

In magic circle, work sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, pull ring tight, join to starting sc, fasten off leaving
tail for sewing to muzzle.

Eyes (make 2)

With H hook and white, ch 5

Round 1 sc in 2

nd

ch from hook and next 2, work 5 sc in last ch, working other side of ch, sc next 2, work

4 sc in last ch and join to starting sc, ch 1

Round 2 sc, hdc next 2, sc next 2, ss next, sc next 2, hdc next 2, sc next 2, ss, sc in last, join, fasten off
leaving tail for sewing to stocking. Sew one ¼” black button onto each one for pupils.

Ears (make 2 with pipsqueak and 2 with black worsted)

Make pipsqueak pieces first.

With J hook, ch 5

Row 1 hdc in 2

nd

ch from hook and next 3, ch 1, turn

Row 2 hdc, hdc2tog, hdc, ch 1, turn

Row 3 hdc3tog, (pipsqueak, fasten off, black continue on)

Holding black piece and pipsqueak piece with wrong sides together, sc around thru both thicknesses
working 3 sc in tip of ear twice, fasten off leaving long tail for sewing to stocking.

Using photo as a guide, sew all pieces into place. Embroider a smile on the muzzle using black worsted
and yarn needle and deck the halls!
