Charliescribbledthereservationnotesinthedark.Hopefullyit’dbelegibleenoughtoreadoncethe

Shehunguphercellphoneandplaceditnexttothedustylandlinesittingonthedesk.Sixmonthsago,

thanhomey.NowwithonlyHopeandCharlielivinghere,theonce-beautifulpropertyfeltpractically
abandoned.

Charliegritherteeth,butHopeflouncedoffbeforeshecouldlandontherightsassyretort.She’d

Hm.Theswitchwasn’tflipped.Charlieturneditoffandonjustforgoodmeasurebutnothing

happened.Thethoughttakingshapeinhermindmadehersick.HadAndynotpaidtheelectricbill?True,
moneywastightsinceshe’dexpandedintoofferingtrailrides.No,hewouldhavetoldheriftheydidn’t
havethecashon-hand.

Sheslammedherfistagainstthesideofthehouseandcursed.She’dcallthepowercompanyfirst

thing.IfAndyhadforgottentopaythebill,thenthiswasthelaststraw.Thebusinesswasstrugglingtoo
muchtoleaveitinthehandsofsomeonesoirresponsible.

Asuddengustofwindblewopenthestabledoorafewhundredfeetaway.Itwaveredinthebreeze,

periodicallycrashingintothesideofthelargewoodstructure.Oneoftheranchhandsmusthaveleftthe
doorunlocked.Annoying,butnotterriblyodd.She’dhiredsomenewworkersaspartofthebusiness
expansion.Afewmistakeshereandtherewereinevitable.

Charliemarchedovertolatchthedoor.Sheknewherhorsescouldhandlethechill,butitfeltcruelall

thesametoleavetheanimalsexposedtothislevelofcold.

Buttherewerenoanimals.Allfortyhorseshaddisappeared.

Ginawasn’tspeakingtohimdirectly,ofcourse.Theolderwomanhadspentthebestyearsofherlife

inthisexactspot,regularlyannouncingthetown’sgoing-onstoherclientele.Likemostpeopleintown,
RichcametotheSlowPokeDinermorefortheentertainmentvaluethanthefood.

“SawCharliewaitingoutsidetheSheriff’sofficethismorning.Wordhasitthere’sbeenatheft.”

Alowmurmurreverberatedthroughoutthebreakfastcrowd.IfRichrememberedcorrectly,thelast

reportedtheftintownhadbeenastringofChristmaslightstakenoffThomasDurkell’sporchlastyear.In
theend,Thomasadmittedtotakingthelightshimselfinordertotesttheresponsivenessofthenewly-
electedSheriff.

Richkeptquiet.ItsickenedhimtothinksomeonewouldstealfromCharlieBalton.He’dbeensixteen

whenhecametoMercySpringstolivewithhisaunt.Charliehadbeenhisfirsttruefriendhere.He
blamedhimselffornotkeepingintouchwhilehewasinlawschool.Nowthathe’dmovedbacktoopen
hisownpracticeintown,itseemedlikeCharliedidn’thavetimeforanythingotherthantheranch.

Charlieslippedoffherouterwearandbootsintheentryway.Histhroattightened.Anembarrassingbut

intothekitchen.

beenhardthiswinter,andshe’dspentmostofthebusiness’cashtolaunchhertrailridingidea.Boarding
andbreedingdemandwasdown.Withallthelocalresortspoppingup,ithadseemedlikeano-brainerto
setupherownadventureoutfit.Shehadtheguidesandthebookings,butnowshedidn’thavethehorses.
Withoutanimals,therewasnowaytoearnenoughmoneytokeepthebusinessafloat.

MeredithwasgoneandHopewastooyoungtoshoulderallthis.No,itwasherjobtosetthisright

andsavetheranch.Still,sheneededtoenlisthelpifshewantedherschemetowork.SheneededRich.

NeverinamillionyearsdidhethinkCharliewouldneedasafetynet.Growingup,theBaltons

appearedtohaveeverythingapersoncouldwant.Ahealthybusiness,alovingfamily,strongtiestothe
community.NowCharliewaslookingtosellherselfofflikeapieceofmeat.

“Areyouseriousaboutthisweddingthing?”

Shedidn’trespond.Heturnedofftheradioandshookhershoulder.
