I. READING

Amy Johnson was born on 1 July 1903 in Hull, in the north-east of
England.
Three months after her eighteenth birthday she went to university
to study Economics. When she left university three years later she
moved to London and decided to work as a secretary. Her job was
very boring, so she wanted an exciting hobby and joined the
London Aeroplane Club. In 1929 she got her pilot's licence.
Amy wanted to show people that women could do the same things
as men and she decided to become a great pilot. In 1930 she flew
11,000 miles from England to Australia on her own in nineteen and
a half days. Two years later she broke the world record for a solo
flight from London to Cape Town in South Africa. Amy Johnson died
a few months before her thirty-eighth birthday when her plane
crashed into the River Thames. Her death was a tragedy and a
mystery. Even today people don't know what happened to her. She
