Flower Fountain Afghan Pattern

Size: 52 x 72 inches without fringe
Materials Required:
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY
"DAWN" KNITTING WORSTED
18 - 4 ounce skeins Black
2 - 4 ounce skeins White
1 - 4 ounce skein Amber, Orange, Golf Green, Tangerine, Dk. Violet and Violet
2 - 1 ounce skeins each Watermelon and Magic Blue
or
If you desire to make afghan back-ground of DAWN "MOHSPUN" you will need
13 - 2 ounce skeins Black MOHSPUN
4 yds. Lining Material if made of MOHSPUN
Plastic Crochet Hooks Size J for background; Size H for flowers OR ANY SIZE HOOK WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE
BE-LOW.
GAUGE FOR SIZE J HOOK:
KNITTING WORSTED background: 4 shells = 3 inches
MOHSPUN background: 3 shells = 2 inches
Directions are given in paren-theses for MOHSPUN.
BACKGROUND
CENTER PANEL: With Black and size J hook ch 114 (129), s c in 3rd st from hook, 1 d c in same space, * skip 2 sts of ch, 1 s c, 1
d c in next ch (shell), repeat from * across ch ending with s c in last ch, 37 (42) shells, ch 2, turn. Work should measure 28 inches.
2nd ROW: 1 s c, 1 d c in 1st s c, * shell in next s c, repeat from * across row ending with s c in last s c, ch 2, turn. Repeat 2nd row
until panel measures 72 inches, cut yarn.
SIDE PANEL (Work 2). With Black ch 51 (57), and work 16 (18) shells same as center panel. Work should measure 12 inches
wide. Continue until same number of rows as center panel, cut yarn. Block sections lightly. Diagram shows arrangement and
quantities of flowers. For best re-sults, run a basting thread as in-dicated by inch lines.
STEMS: With Golf Green work a ch slightly longer than necessary, work 1 sl st in each ch. Tack in position as illustrated.
LARGE FLOWER: Work 19 of flow-ers #1 through #6 in colors as shown on diagram. With main color and size H hook, ch 8, join,
sl st in ring, * 1 d c, 1 tr c, 1 d tr c, 1 tr tr c (4 times over hook), 1 d tr c, 1 tr c, 1 d c, sl st in ring, repeat from * 4 times (5 petals).
2nd ROUND: * Ch 1, skip sl st, 1 s c in each of next 3 sts, ch 1, 1 s d c (s d c: y o hook, insert in st, pull through, y o and work off
all loops at one time), ch 1, 1 s d c in center st, ch 1, 1 s c in each of remaining 3 sts of petal, repeat from * all around, join.
3rd ROUND: * Ch 2, sl st between petals, repeat from * all around, cut yarn. 4th ROUND: Attach any contrasting color in any ch 2
loop for center, work 2 s c, ch 3, 2 s c over each ch 2 loop, join, cut yarn.
LEAVES (#12 on Diagram): Work 11. With Golf Green ch 3, join to form a ring, work 1 petal same as large flower, cut yarn. Attach
as indicated on diagram.
SMALL FLOWERS: Work 15 same as large flower omitting 3rd and 4th rounds working centers and colors as indicated on
diagram. With Golf Green applique large flower and small flower in posi-tion with a lazy daisy st at top of each petal.
LILY CENTER: With color indi-cated on diagram * ch 10, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, sl st in each ch, repeat from * 3 times, cut yarn
leaving a length to pull through center of flower.
BUD CENTER: With color indi-cated on diagram ch 6, 4 d c in 4th st from hook, 4 d c in each ch, cut yarn leaving a length.
BUD GROUPS: Work 8 Tangerine, 3 Orange, 5 Amber same as bud center to be placed among bud groups at lower portion of
panel as shown in photograph.
SMALL BUDS: Work 8 Tangerine, 3 Orange, 6 Amber. Ch 5, 4 s c in 2nd ch from hook, 5 s c in each remaining ch, cut yarn, pull
end through to wrong side and arrange according to photograph.
CALA LILY (#10 on Diagram): Work 13. With White ch 9, 1 s c in 2nd ch from hook and in each re-maining ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd
ROW: 1 s c in each s c, ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row 6 times. Fold sec-tion in half to form triangle, work-ing through both thicknesses
sl st through last row and 1st ch, * sl st through next row and next ch, repeat from * to end, cut yarn.
CALA LILY CENTER: With Orange ch 11, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch, cut yarn and pull end through center
of lily. Fasten at base and attach to center panel as illustrated.
LILY OF THE VALLEY (#11 on Diagram): (Work 6). With White * ch 6, 2 s c in 2nd st from hook and in each remaining ch, repeat
from * 4 times, cut yarn. Attach Golf Green in 1st st, work 1 sl st in each st at base of flowers, ch 8 for stem. Attach as illustrated.
BLEEDING HEARTS: Work 6 large and 15 small. Changes for large are given in parentheses. With Watermelon ch 3, 2 (3) d c in
1st ch, ch 1, 2 (3) d c in same space, ch 2, sl st in same space. 2nd ROW: Sl st in back of each st to ch 1 space at center, 1 sl st,
ch 1, 1 sl st in same ch 1 space, sl st in each remaining st, cut yarn. With Golf Green applique in position to curved stems as shown
in photograph with a lazy daisy st at top of each heart.
#13 and #13A FLOWER: Work 5 Magic Blue for #13, and 3 Water-melon for #13A. * Ch 6, 4 d c in 2nd st from hook, 4 d c in each
remaining ch, s c in same space with last d c, repeat from * 4 times, join in 1st s c. Attach to afghan with a small bud center in
Amber.
#14 FLOWER: Work 4 Magic Blue. * Ch 5, 4 s c in 2nd ch from hook, 4 s c in each remaining ch, sl st in same space with last s c,
re-peat from * 4 times, join. With Amber applique in position indi-cated.
Work 3 Magic Blue buds same as bud center and attach to lower section as shown in photograph.
FINISHING: Join 1 side panel to center panel as follows: place wrong sides tog, working through both thicknesses and matching
rows attach Black in corner, * ch 1, sl st in next row, repeat from * across panel, cut yarn. Complete other side in same manner.
LINING: Line if desired. Cut lin-ing to fit afghan having seam at center, allowing about 1 inch to turn under on all sides. Sew in
place to wrong side. Quilt lining to afghan at intervals to hold in place.
FRINGE: Cut yarn into 3 inch lengths. * Take 2 strands, double in half and loop through st, repeat from * all around edge. Trim
fringe evenly.
