quella incentrata sulle bambole-giocattolo assemblate in maniera innaturale) è talmente ricca e originale

On exhibit some 70 small format vintage photographs created by Hans Bellmer (1902-1975) during his

early photographic period in 1934 as well as some of his contact prints taken between 1934 and 1938. His

influence on new artistic trends remains significant, even if rarely spoken of. Bellmerʼs output was small (no

more than 150 different images) and sporadic, but his work (especially that focused on toy dolls put together

in an unnatural manner) is so rich and original that it is unmatched within Surrealism. His photographs

hearken back to German Expressionist cinema, are explicitly fetishistic and use the play of light and

shadow found in Renaissance religious paintings. This exhibition coincides with the traveling retrospective

organized by the Centre Georges Pompidou entitled “Hans Bellmer: Anatomy of Desire” and the exhibition

hosted by the Miguel Abreu Gallery in New York through 2 July.
