How to prepare for 問題 3

In 問題 3, you need to choose the appropriate conjunction or phrase that fits the passage.

Please review the commonly used conjunctions that come between sentences, such as

そして, それから, そのうえ, さらに, しかし, また, ところが, じつは and so on.

To pass JLPT N3 and above, knowing how to use auxiliary verbs and suffixes is essential.

Knowing how these auxiliary verbs and suffixes work not only helps you to prepare for the

test, but also helps you sound natural in Japanese.

In this lesson, weʼll focus on reviewing auxiliary verbs, suffixes or nouns that attach to other

verbs, nouns and adjectives.

Expressions that come after the masu stem of a verb

■ [Verb; masu stem]＋ぬく

"to manage to do something to the end enduring hardship"

- 寒い冬を生きぬくために、動物は秋にたくさん食べ物をとる。

"Animals eat a lot during autumn in order to survive the cold winter."

■ [Verb; masu stem]＋きる

"to finish doing something completely"

- 一日に、マンガを１０冊読みきった。

(= 一日に、マンガを10冊読み終えた。)

I completed (finished reading) 10 volumes of manga in one day.

■ [Verb; masu stem]＋かける

"とちゅうまで---した", "partially", "half"

- 犯人は、何かを言いかけたが、とつぜんたおれた。

(= 犯人は、何かをとちゅうまで言ったが、とつぜんたおれた。)

The criminal started to say something, but then suddenly fainted.

■ [Verb; masu form stem]＋っぱなし

”---たまま”, "keep ---ing"

- ゆうべは、電気をつけっぱなしで、ねた。

(= ゆうべは、でんきをつけたままでねた。)

Last night, I went to sleep with the lights left on.

■ [Verb; masu form stem]＋たて

"今---たばかり", "freshly done", "have just done"

- 焼きたてのクッキーです。どうぞ食べてください。

(= 今、焼き終わったばかりのクッキーです。どうぞ食べてください。)

These are freshly baked cookies. Please have some.

■ [Verb; masu form stem]＋がたい

"---するのは難しい", "かんたんに---できない", "hard to---"

This is similar to "--にくい." However, --- にくい means "itʼs hard to do because of oneʼs lack

of ability", whereas がたい means that something is emotionally difficult or impossible to do.

- そんな話は、信じがたい。

(＝そんな話は、かんたんに信じられない)

I find that story hard to believe.

Expressions that follow nouns

■ [Noun]＋だらけ

"---ばかり", "---がたくさん" "full of---"

This is usually used to refer to something that the speaker does not favor.

- 難しい漢字だらけで、ぜんぜん読めません。

(＝難しい漢字がたくさんあって、ぜんぜん読めません。)

It's full of hard kanji - I can't read it.

■ [Noun]＋向き（むき）

"---にむいている", "suitable for---", "facing"

- 南向きの部屋に住みたい。

I want to live in a room that has windows facing south.

- このケーキはあまり甘くないから、僕向きだよ。

This cake isn't that sweet, so it's suitable for me.

■ [Noun]＋向け（むけ）

"---のために特別に作った", "to be aimed at", "directed towards"

- 私は、男の子向けのマンガを読むのが好きだった。

I liked reading manga that were geared towards boys.

Expressions that follow verbs or nouns

■ [Verb; masu form stem/Noun]＋ぎみ

"すこし---だ", "feels or seems like ----"

- かぜぎみなので、会社を休んだ。

I felt a cold coming on, so I stayed home from work.

■ [Verb; masu form stem/Noun]＋がち

"よく----する", "----がおおい", "be apt to---" "tend to---"

- 最近、会社を休みがちだけれど、どうしたの。

You've been missing work a lot lately... what's going on?

Expressions that follow adjectives

■ [I-Adj; stem-without the final "i"]＋げ

■ [Na-Adj; dictionary form]＋げ

"---そう", "seeming"

---げ is similar to ---そう. However, げ is exclusively used to describe a personʼs state.

- 悲しげな顔をして、どうしたの？

You look so sad... what happened?

- 彼は、何か言いたげだった。

He looked like he wanted to say something.

Expressions follows a noun or an adjective

■ [I-Adj; stem-without the final "i"] ＋っぽい

■ [Na-Adj./Noun]＋っぽい

"〜のようだ", "-ish", "---like"

- あの子はまだ12才だが、大人っぽい。

That child is only 12, but is very mature.

■ [Verb; Dictionary form]＋べき

"---なければならない", "should", "ought to"

■ [Verb; Dictionary form]＋べきではない

"---てはいけない", "shouldnʼt"

According to the grammar book, べきだ is weaker than なければならないand stronger than

たほうがいい.

- それは言うべきではない。

You should not say that.

■ [Verb; Nai form stem ] ＋ざるを得ない（ざるをえない）

"---なければならない", "cannot help---ing", "have no choice but to---"

- お金も仕事もなくなったので、国に帰らざるをえなかった。

I lost all my money and my job, so I had no choice but to return to my home country.

*Please note that for する, itʼs not しざるをえない but せざるをえない: "can not help doing

something".
