Chapter One
“Welcome, Mr. Hawkins,” Director Oblinski said with a broad grin
as he offered his hand to Derek. “I trust you had no difficulties finding
us?”
“None, thank you. Your directions were excellent,” Derek replied
as he rose from the sofa in the waiting area.
“Won’t you come into my office? I’m sure you’ve got lots of
questions for me.”
“A few,” Derek answered with a nod. The director gestured with
one hand toward the long hallway leading to his office.
A variety of three‐dimensional holographic portraits lined the walls
of the hallway. One showed a pair of racehorses charging for the finish
line before a packed grandstand, while another displayed a young lady
seated on a bench, her long gown arranged artfully around her. She
smiled invitingly as she lifted a single rose toward the viewer. A third was
of the interior of a vast cathedral, lit by dozens of candles in elegant
candelabras. A nun crossed before the altar, pausing to genuflect in
devotion.
The fourth portrait, one of a schooner ship sailing on emerald green
seas, was so realistic that Derek thought he could almost smell a tang of
salt in the air. He paused to study the picture. The ship bobbed up and
down, riding the gentle swells of the ocean as it undulated rhythmically.
The bowsprit, as it broke the waves, bore the name Eugenia.
“This ship,” Derek murmured.

“It’s from our pirate scenario. Quite popular, that one, especially
for the young fellows like you.”
Derek glanced over at the older gentleman with a chuckle as the
pair continued on to the director’s office. “Thanks. It’s been a while since
anyone’s called me a young fellow.”
“Pshaw,” Oblinski disregarded him. “You can’t be more than
thirty‐two, at best.”
“Thirty‐four, actually, next Tuesday.”
“Well, then, happy birthday in advance,” Oblinski said as he
stepped aside to allow his guest to precede him through the doorway. “I
take it your visit to Virtual Suites is part of your celebration?”
“Perhaps,” Derek said.
“I’m sure you’ll be quite impressed with our product, Mr.
Hawkins,” the director said as he ushered Derek into his private office.
In sharp contrast to the sleek and stylized office building, this room
was an homage to the past. Oak paneling lined the walls, and great
bookshelves were filled with books of various shapes and sizes. There was
the smell of paper and old leather in the room. Oblinski led Derek to a
pair of wingback chairs that flanked a fireplace. A cheerful blaze cast its
warmth and light on the scene, a welcome relief from the blustery day
outside.
“I imagine you’re quite chilled. We’ve been having an unusually
cold winter this year. May I offer you a cup of coffee?” Oblinski swept his
hand toward a silver service.
“Please.” Derek nodded as he took the chair to the left of the
fireplace.
“Cream? Sugar?”
“Both, if you don’t mind.” Derek grinned. “I like a little coffee with
my cream and sugar.”
Oblinski chuckled as he poured a generous dollop of cream into the
cup, added a splash of coffee and dropped three cubes of sugar into the
mixture. He passed it to Derek, along with a spoon. Derek stirred his
coffee as Oblinski prepared a cup for himself and took the seat opposite
him. Oblinksi crossed his legs as he blew into his cup, then took a cautious

sip. “So, have you decided which package you’d like to have?”
“I’m definitely interested in the pirate scenario,” Derek said and
tasted his drink. The coffee was rich and warm, and it drew an
appreciative sigh from him. Holding up his cup, he said, “This is
delicious.”
“My personal blend. I’m glad you like it. As I told you, the pirate
scenario is a particular favorite amongst our clientele. All that raping and
pillaging,” Oblinski said with a lascivious chuckle.
“Not quite what I had in mind,” Derek answered as he set his cup
on the table beside him. “I’m thinking more along the lines of a privateer.
The challenges of battle, you know?”
Oblinski nodded, a thoughtful expression coming into his eyes. “So
it’s not so much the lawbreaking for you, then? Well, that’s certainly a
change. Most of our pirate customers are in it strictly to explore those
darker fantasies that we all have. Still, with your build and the way you
wear your hair, you’ll fit right in with the crew. Do you have much sailing
experience?”
“Some. My grandfather had a boat. I spent a couple of summers
learning how to perform all the different functions. But I’ve always
wanted to experience sailing on a great ship.”
“And so you shall! Now, there are a few things I’d like to go over
with you.” Oblinski pulled a data pad from his coat pocket and consulted
it briefly. “We’ve found that the best way to transition into the scenario is
under a light sedation. Here’s your pill, Mr. Hawkins. Please take it at
eight a.m. tomorrow. Our costumers will have your clothes ready for you
when you arrive. We’ll just have you change into your costume before we
begin your E and A session at nine.”
“The E and A?” Derek prompted.
“Sorry, evaluation and analysis. It’s how our computer learns to
tailor a scenario to your precise needs. Everything from the ambient
temperature of the scenario to the flavors of food served is determined
through a genetic analysis. Most of our guests do not mind that we take
some liberties with cuisine and historical accuracy. Our primary concern
is that you have an enjoyable vacation, so we make sure the food will be to
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
7
your taste. More importantly, the E and A is crucial for the development
of your companion element.”
“Companion element? What is that?”
“It is one of our more select features, one that we do not publicly
advertise,” Oblinski said with a conspiratorial smile. “I’m sure you can
appreciate the need for discretion. The system designs the perfect
companion for you. For some, it is a sexual partner; for others it is a friend
with whom one shares the experience. The computer evaluates your
companionship needs and programs a companion accordingly.”
Derek leaned forward and propped his elbows on his knees, his
fingertips steepled together. “Is it my choice?”
“Of course!” Oblinski picked up his mug and took a long drink.
Setting the cup aside, he continued. “If you are attracted to your
companion element, then sex will be an option that is available for you.
Keep in mind that the computer will be constantly monitoring your
scenario and will make adjustments as they become necessary.”
“Just the computer?” Derek asked as he felt a faint blush stain his
cheekbones.
“Yes. Should the need arise for human intervention, the computer
will immediately notify one of our staff. However, there are security
protocols in place for your physical safety. You cannot be harmed in your
scenario.”
“Suppose my crew and I raid another ship? What happens if I
engage someone in a sword fight?”
“The scenario will be as real as you want it to be in all respects. You
are considered the primary character in the scene. All secondary
characters are vulnerable to injury or death. Only you are protected by the
safety protocols.” Oblinski checked his watch briefly. “Do you have any
more questions? I’m afraid we’re running a bit behind schedule this
morning.”
“Not right now,” Derek said, rising from his chair, one hand
extended toward the director.
Oblinski rose and shook his hand, then gestured toward the door.
“Then we will see you at nine a.m. tomorrow.”

Chapter Two
Things had been tough at the Whitley & Logan Agency of late.
Times being what they were, Joshua’s clients had, almost without
exception, made drastic cuts in their advertising budgets The pressure
was on to provide top quality advertising choices for a minimal cash pool.
Joshua had taken to working all hours of the day and night. He
kept a toothbrush in his desk drawer; his dry cleaning was delivered to
the company’s receptionist every morning, and he was on a first name
basis with the delivery boys from all the local eateries.
A soft rap on the doorframe drew Joshua’s attention away from the
layouts spread on his slanted desk. He glanced over his shoulder and then
nodded to the other man. “Hey,Tom. You’re here late, aren’t you?”
“What are you working on?” Tom asked as he stepped up beside
Joshua to study the designs. “The Riperston campaign?”
“Yeah,” Joshua said with a sigh, swiping one hand over his tired
eyes before he loosened his necktie a bit more.
“How’s it coming?”
Joshua snorted his frustration. “Not good. I’ve got Jamie and Alicia
working on it full time, and this is the best that they’ve managed to bring
me.”
Tom picked up one of the mockups and studied it for a long
moment. He laid it aside and then took up another. “Hate to tell you this,
buddy, but these are crap.”
“I know.”
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
10
“Maybe I should have my team look at it. You know, fresh eyes and
all.”
“Thanks,” Joshua said as he crossed his arms over his chest. “But I
don’t think—“
“You look beat. I think you may even be getting some gray hairs.”
“Oh, fuck you!” Joshua said with a tired chuckle.
Tom chuckled as well and then said, “Look, buddy, why don’t you
take a few days off.”
“You have no idea how tempting that sounds right now,” Joshua
replied as he leaned one hip against the edge of the desk.
“All work and no play, Josh, you know what they say. You’ve been
busting your ass around here, I can see that, but sometimes you push your
people too hard. You need to learn how to relax.”
“I can relax when I’m dead.”
Tom put one hand on Joshua’s shoulder and squeezed it
comfortingly. “I want you to take a few days off.”
“But the Riperston campaign isn’t even close to ready! I’ve got
three accounts that are pressuring me for results on a shoestring budget,
and rumor has it the Myers are looking at moving their account over to
Denton & George. It’s just not a good time right now, Tom.”
“And when these emergencies are over, there’ll be another five on
the horizon. I’m serious, Joshua. You need to unwind. Look, go spend
some time with your family, take a vacation, do something. But I don’t
want to see you in this office until next Monday. Understood?”
“But…”
Tom clenched his jaw and shook his head. “No. You’re done until
Monday. End of discussion.”
“Okay,” he said reluctantly. Tom slapped his friend’s bicep
companionably and headed for the door.
“Oh, and Joshua?” Tom said as he paused in the doorway. “Have a
good time!”

“Joshua!” Director Oblinski crossed the waiting area, one hand
extending in greeting. “I’m so glad you could join us. Will you be able to
stay for long?”
“I have a couple days off,” Joshua replied as he shook Oblinski’s
hand. “I thought I’d take you up on your offer. So what’s on special this
month?”
The director gestured toward his office, a silent invitation for
Joshua to accompany him. The pair moved down the long hallway
together. “Well, there is that yacht scenario we’ve been saving for you.
The one on Lake Como?”
Joshua considered it for a moment and then said, “Sounds like just
the thing for me. I’ve been under a lot of stress at work and have orders
from my business partner to relax.”
“That won’t be difficult in the Lake Como scenario.” Oblinski
opened the door for Joshua and allowed him to enter the paneled office.
“Can I fix you a drink? Vodka tonic is your drink of choice, if I remember
correctly from the casino scenario.”
“You have an excellent memory. That would be a kindness, yes,”
Joshua said as he sat in a wing chair before the fire. He leaned his head on
the tall back of the chair and propped one elbow on the armrest as he
waited for the director. Even now, he could feel the tight muscles in his
neck and shoulders starting to loosen as he relaxed.
“Here you are,” Oblinski said as he offered Joshua a glass. “Sorry I
don’t have any lime, but the vodka is of the finest quality, I assure you.”
Joshua tasted his drink and sighed with pleasure. “It’s perfect.
Thanks, I needed this.”
“Tough time at work?”
“Yeah, and with the economy going in the toilet, things are just
getting tougher.”
“I’m quite sure I know what you mean,” Oblinski said with a nod.
“When money gets tight, people take fewer vacations. It’s affecting even
our revenues, I’m afraid. And virtual vacations are much less costly than
your traditional vacation.”
“I hadn’t thought about that, but yeah, I could see where it would
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
12
be impacting your company pretty hard.”
Oblinski took a sip of his drink, some fruity looking concoction that
glistened red in the cocktail glass. “Well, we’re not here to talk about my
problems. Let’s hash out what you’re looking for on this vacation, shall
we?”
“I’ve been ordered to ‘relax,’” he said, making quote marks with his
hands. “However that happens is fine by me.”
“Well, then I’m sure the Lake Como scenario will be agreeable to
you.”
“Can I request a companion this time?”
“Certainly! Your evaluation is on file, and the companion will be
created soon after you enter your scenario.”
“And it will feel real, right? I mean, that’s what you were telling me
before.”
Director Oblinski nodded. “It’s as real as you want it to be.”
“Sounds perfect.”
“Glad to hear it! I’ll have Juliana show you to your room.” The pair
rose and shook hands once more.

Joshua climbed the ladder and scooped up a towel. He swiped it
over his face and tossed it aside as he moved to the rear deck. An
assortment of cushions was spread out on the deck, and a bottle of wine
was chilling in a bucket. He poured himself a generous glass and took a
deep swig. Plopping down on the cushion, Joshua picked up his
sunglasses and slipped them on. With a deep sigh, he lay back on the
cushions, threaded his fingers together and cupped the back of his head.
Vacationing at Virtual Suites definitely had its benefits. The light
warming his bare skin was a great facsimile of true sunlight, but without
the risk of cancer causing agents, so he didn’t have to wear sunscreen. The
ebb and flow of the tides were perfectly calibrated to Joshua’s internal
rhythms, so no worries of seasickness. In a little while, one of the crew
would be along to give him a much needed massage, and at some point
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
13
the companion element would be introduced.
All of it well worth the cost, Joshua mused. It wasn’t long before
the gentle up and down motion of the boat lulled him into sleep.

Chapter Three
The bus was approaching his stop. Derek closed his laptop,
gathered his papers and packed them carelessly into his tote. Then he rose
from his seat and reached for the leather loop that dangled from the
ceiling of the bus. Around him was an odd assortment of people, some
shabbily dressed while others looked like they could’ve stepped off the
pages of a fashion magazine. Derek noted, with a glance in the reflective
windowpane, that his own sense of style fell somewhere in the middle. He
wore a pair of navy wool trousers, a button‐down shirt, and a red tie,
currently loosened. His sandy hair hung in disorderly locks around his
face, and the stubble on his jaw line added to his air of rebellion.
The bus screeched to a halt, and its passengers began to disembark.
Derek waited patiently behind a plump older lady who was gathering her
many shopping bags.
“May I help you?” he asked after a few moments.
The old woman paused to give him a glare, silently challenging
him to try something.
“I just figured we were getting off at the same stop, so I thought I’d
help you, if you needed it.”
“You just keep your hands to yourself, mister.”
Derek held his hands out to either side, his gesture meaning no
harm intended, chuckling to himself.
“I can take care of myself, thank you very much! I’m not that old,
I’ll have you know!”
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
15
“Yes, ma’am, I imagine you take very good care of yourself.”
“Now don’t you get smart with me, mister.”
“No ma’am,” Derek said, assuming a properly chastened look.
“Here,” she said as she shoved a bag at him. “Might as well make
yourself useful. After all, we’re getting off at the same stop.”
“Yes ma’am.” Derek grinned as he took the proffered bag.
At last the crowded line began to move in slow, shuffling steps
down the aisle of the bus. “Mrs. Margaret Perkins,” the woman said as an
aside over her shoulder.
“Derek Hawkins. Pleased to make your acquaintance.”
“Where are you heading for, Mr. Hawkins?”
“Just to work. I’m at McGibbons, McGarrity and Boon, in the
Shiltmire building.”
“What do you do there?” Mrs. Perkins asked once they made it to
the sidewalk. She began sorting through her many bags to make sure she
had them all. “Damn it, where’s the bag with the tea in it?”
“Right here,” Derek said as he held out the bag. “I’m a tax
accountant.”
Mrs. Perkins stopped cold to stare up at him for a long moment,
then said, “Nawww. You’re not one of them bleeding accountants. You
don’t fit the type, young man.”
“No, really, it’s true.” He smiled. “I’m a tax accountant.”
“Well, you’re much too handsome to be wasting yourself in
accounting. You should be acting or modeling or some such.” Mrs.
Perkins shook a finger in Derek’s face.
“I’ll…uh… keep that in mind. Here’s your bag. I’ve got to run or I’ll
be late. It was nice meeting you, Mrs. Perkins.”
“And you, Mr. Hawkins,” she called after him as Derek sprinted
down the walkway toward the Shiltmire building.

Agency, one of his firm’s new clients this year. Now he took a break from
the complicated income tax returns and dove into the property tax returns
as a way to rest his brain. He was having trouble concentrating, anyway.
Just a few more hours and he’d be off on his Virtual Suites vacation.
Derek had been planning this trip for quite some time, saving up
his spare cash and religiously stashing it away in an old tin box that had
belonged to his grandfather. Once a month, like clockwork, he would dig
the box out of its hiding place—under a pile of old running shoes in the
hall closet—and count its contents.
Tomorrow, he was going to take the money to the bank to purchase
a spending card for his vacation with Virtual Suites. Tomorrow, he was
going to live out one of his fantasies.

Joshua scratched lazily at his chin and stretched before he turned
over and pulled a loose pillow to his chest. It was late, or least it felt late.
He sighed deeply as he burrowed into the covers for a few more minutes.
“Are you hungry?”
He sat up quickly, snatching the blanket to him. The room was
unfamiliar; he’d fallen asleep sunbathing on the padded foredeck of a
small yacht sailing in the Lake Como. How then had he come to be in the
bunk of this cabin?
“There’s plenty of food here, if you’re hungry.” The man seated at
the table pushed a lock of his sandy blond hair off of his forehead. He
focused on Joshua with his deep hazel eyes as he took a sip of wine from a
crystal goblet he held delicately by the stem.
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
18
“Where am I?” Joshua asked.
“You’re aboard my ship, the Eugenia,” he said, setting down the
goblet and tearing a hunk of bread from the loaf before him.
“Who are you?”
“Captain Derek Hawkins.” The man slathered a bit of butter on the
bread with an old‐fashioned knife, broad with a discolored steel blade. It
was dwarfed by his hand. “And you?”
“Joshua Logan. How did I get here?”
“Not quite sure. My men fished you out of the drink, brought you
in here.” Derek stabbed a piece of beef with the tip of his knife and
popped it into his mouth. “But as to how you ended up in the water, no
idea.”
“Weird,” Joshua muttered under his breath.
“Are you going to eat any of this or not?” Derek asked, gesturing
toward the pot in the center of the table.
“No, thanks, you take it.” He started to push the covers aside when
he suddenly realized he was naked. Naked in the captain’s very large
bunk onboard the Eugenia. He swallowed thickly. “Um, Captain…
Hawkins, was it? Did we, uh…?”
“Have sex?” Derek looked up from his plate, his hazel eyes roving
over Joshua’s bare chest and shoulders before drifting downward and up
again, a smile playing at one corner of his mouth as he chewed a bite of
bread. “Not yet.”
Joshua felt the other man’s teasing with an intense twinge in his
groin. “W‐where are my clothes?”
Derek pointed his fork at a pair of swimming trunks that were
drying over the back of the chair on the opposite side of the table.
“Would you mind handing them to me?”
The captain leaned back in his chair, hooked one arm over the back
of it and extended his left leg. The smile that had been threatening
manifested itself in a roguish grin, accompanied by a challenging twinkle
of those hazel eyes. “Get them yourself.”
“Yeah, well, uh…”
“It’s not like I haven’t seen what you got, boy.” Derek chuckled at
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
19
Joshua’s discomfort. “I was here when Doc stripped you down to examine
you. And trust me, you’ve got no reason to be ashamed.”
Joshua took a steadying breath and then cast aside the blanket to
rise from the bed. Just a few quick steps and he had his swimming trunks
in his hands, and then jerked up to his hips. Once he was clothed, even if
it was just a pair of swimming shorts, he didn’t feel quite so vulnerable.
Derek grabbed another crystal goblet from the rack on the wall and
poured Joshua a generous portion of the fragrant red wine. He topped off
his own glass and then handed one goblet to Joshua. “So what do you
remember? How did you end up floating in the water off the side of my
ship?”
“I’m not really sure. The last thing I remember, I was lying on a
lounge on the deck of a… friend’s yacht.”
“Friend? As in lover?” Derek asked, one eyebrow raised.
“No, more like a business acquaintance.”
“So what kind of business leads you to sunning yourself on a
yacht?”
“Advertising, mostly,” Joshua said as he took a sip of the wine.
“Mmm, this is delicious! What vintage is it?”
“Picard, 1573,” Derek replied. “What sort of advertising?”
“Electronic media, mostly, but we’re starting to explore other forms
of delivery.”
“And what are you advertising?” Derek asked in a slightly teasing
tone, “How to undress for success?”
Joshua glanced down at his scantily clad form and then gave a
reluctant chuckle. “Yeah, something like that. What about you? What do
you do?”
“Isn’t it obvious?” Derek stood from his chair and gestured around
the cabin, the spread of his arms accentuating his broad chest and muscled
shoulders. “Pirating. It’s quite lucrative these days. You should try it out
some time.”
“Maybe I will,” Joshua said with another chuckle. “How does one
get to be a pirate captain?”
“Well, most of us work our way up through the ranks. I started out
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
20
as a deckhand, became a gunner, then first mate. When Captain Merius
was killed in a battle, I stepped up and took command,” Derek said.
“Sounds dangerous,” Joshua commented as he took a sip of his
wine.
“It’s a living,” Derek said with a shrug. “Speaking of which, there’s
the slight problem of your passage on this ship.”
“Problem?” Joshua echoed, feeling a bit thick.
“You didn’t have any money on you when we pulled you onboard.
I took the liberty of searching your clothes for valuables,” Derek said with
a provocative smile. “Captain’s prerogative, you know.”
“Yeah, well, not much call for pockets in these things,” Joshua said
as he plucked at the hem of his swimming trunks.
Which leads us to the question: how do you propose paying for
your passage?”
“I can work.”
“What can you do? Do you have experience sailing?”
“Only as a passenger, I’m afraid.”
“Well.” Derek frowned slightly. “That’s definitely a problem.”
“Can I pay you when we reach port?”
“What’s to keep you from skipping out?”
“My word, sir,” Joshua said, unable to disguise the slight irritation
he felt. “I am an honorable man.”
“That may well be, but I’m afraid I’m not the trusting sort. Do you
have another solution in mind?” Derek took a sip of wine.
“I suppose I could pay you in another way.” Joshua kept his gaze
directed on the goblet before him.
Derek reached across the table and touched Joshua’s chin, forcing
him to meet his gaze. He traced a line along Joshua’s stubbly jaw with the
flat of his thumb. His voice warm and low, he said, “I think you’d make a
lovely cabin boy.”
“And what all does that entail?” Joshua asked, a twinge of heat
settling in his groin.
“Some tidying up, some laundry, serve a few meals,” Derek
counted off on his fingers, and then leaned back with a cheeky grin. “But
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson

mostly, sex.”
“Sex?”
“Lots of sex.” Derek’s grin was a challenge in itself as he reclined in
his chair and tossed back the last of his wine. “So, want to apply for the
position?”
“Depends,” Joshua said, stalling for time, “What do I get in
return?”
“Your meals, a soft place to sleep, the chance to travel,” Derek
replied.
“And sex,” Joshua prompted.
“Lots of sex,” Derek said with a nod, a lascivious twinkle in his
hazel eyes. “Interested?”
“It’s as real as you want it to be,” Joshua muttered to himself.
“What was that?” The other man looked puzzled, his eyebrows
drawn together.
“Nothing, sir,” Joshua said quickly in a more formal tone. “Will
you be needing anything else tonight, sir?”
Derek laughed aloud, the deep timbre and richness of it filling the
room. “Just sex.”
“Would the captain prefer that I tidy up the cabin first?” Joshua
pushed away from the table and rose, a sultry smile on his face. He moved
to Derek’s side and put his hand on the other man’s shoulder. “When is
the last time you had someone clean up in here? I imagine a cabin boy
would be put to good use.”
Derek chuckled as his gaze roamed over Joshua’s bare chest,
touching briefly on his dusky nipples appreciatively before he looked up
again. “Absolutely.”
Joshua slipped his hands into the waistband of his swimming
trunks and pushed them down around his ankles, then stepped out of
them and kicked them aside. With a careless grace, he swung one leg over
Derek’s legs and settled himself in the other man’s lap. Derek’s hands
came up to grasp Joshua’s naked ass and pull him into closer contact.
“Nice,” Derek murmured as he rocked his hardening cock against
the younger man’s flesh.
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
22
Joshua leaned in and nuzzled Derek’s lips in a teasing movement.
His breath, a warm sensual tease of its own, ghosted over the sensitive
flesh of Derek’s lips before the tip of his tongue stole out to trace the
curve. Derek growled softly as he captured Joshua’s mouth in a hungry
kiss.
Derek thrust his tongue over Joshua’s lips and explored him
hungrily, stroking his tongue over the slick surface of his teeth before
tangling their tongues together. Derek tasted of the rich wine and of
something that was uniquely him. Joshua found it intoxicating. He sighed
into Derek’s mouth as his hands slipped into Derek’s tawny hair, tugging
at it sensuously. At last, the two broke apart. Joshua stared into Derek’s
hazel eyes and panted softly, trying to catch his breath as he massaged the
nape of Derek’s neck. “So, can I be your cabin boy, sir?”
Derek grinned as he slapped Joshua’s right buttock with his hand.
“Get on the bed.”
Joshua stole another kiss, marveling again at the unique flavor that
was Derek, before he rose with a lazy grace, one hand reaching down to
grasp the firm bulge between Derek’s legs and giving it a warm squeeze.
Derek inhaled sharply and rocked his hips upward, pushing into Joshua’s
hand.
“On the bed,” he murmured into Joshua’s mouth. “Now.”
“Yes, sir,” Joshua replied, giving Derek’s lower lip a gentle nip. He
moved across the room and grabbed the blanket that lay tousled on the
bed. He tossed it onto the floor before slipping onto his stomach on the
bed, one leg drawn up slightly. The sun‐kissed flesh of his body and his
dark hair contrasted nicely with the crisp white sheets, he knew.
Derek stood up and reached behind his head, grabbing the collar of
his linen shirt and pulling it over his head. He dropped it on the floor
beside the blanket as he toed out of his boots, then unbuttoned his
trousers. He reached into the opening and gave his hard cock a few slow
strokes before he pushed the fabric down past his hips. Joshua rolled onto
his side, his hand mirroring Derek’s as he watched him with an intimate
smile.
“Come here,” he said, his voice low and inviting.
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
23
Derek leaned down and kissed him again, his mouth slowly going
over and over Joshua’s in a sensual dance. Joshua reached up and pulled
him onto the bed, rolling them over until he was on top of the other man.
He straddled Derek and sat up. He rocked his hips forward until their
cocks came into contact with each other, and then he leaned forward and
braced his hands on either side of Derek’s head.
“Yes,” Derek hissed as he reached down and grabbed both of them.
His large hand stroked the twin columns of flesh with lazy movements.
“Oh, yeah,” Joshua murmured in agreement as he moved his hips
rhythmically. He closed his eyes briefly and bit his lower lip as he savored
the sensation of Derek’s tight grip. Derek released their cocks and reached
for a bottle of oil that stood on a shelf built into the hull of the ship. He
deftly popped the cork, poured some oil onto his hardness, and then
slicked his fingers. Joshua rose up on his knees and reached back to grab
one ass cheek, pulling himself open in invitation. Derek’s finger found
Joshua’s puckered opening and slipped inside. Joshua closed his eyes
again as he focused on the intimate invasion.
“Feel good?” Derek asked softly.
“Oh yeah,” Joshua agreed as he pressed down on the man’s
invading finger. “More. Give me more.”
Derek obliged, slipping a second finger inside for a few moments
before withdrawing. He grabbed Joshua’s hips in silent encouragement,
moving him into place. A moment later, the silky hardness of Derek’s cock
was pressed against Joshua’s opening. He coaxed Joshua down until he
was completely engulfed in his tight grip. Joshua hissed and then panted
softly for a few moments.
“Too fast?” Derek asked.
“Too much,” Joshua replied. “But in a good way.”
“I bet you say that to all the captains.” Derek chuckled as he rubbed
his hand over the small of Joshua’s back, waiting for him to adjust to the
invasion.
“Nope,” Joshua replied a bit breathlessly. “You’re the first.”
At last, Joshua began to rock back and forth, allowing Derek’s cock
to slip in and out in a sensual dance. Derek thrust upward, meeting his

hips. He groaned appreciatively as Joshua rotated his hips.
“Fuck! Do that again!” Derek said hoarsely.
Joshua rotated his hips again and then gasped as Derek’s cock
pressed against his prostate. He rolled his bottom once more, bringing
Derek’s cock into contact with that sweet spot time after time. He grabbed
his cock and began stroking in rhythm to Derek’s thrusts. For long
minutes, he panted and moaned his pleasure. At last he said, “I think I’m
going to come.”
“Do it,” Derek ordered, his voice tense. Joshua stroked himself
rapidly with one hand before spilling on Derek’s broad chest, his seed
stringing out in ropy strands. Derek tightened his grip on Joshua’s hips as
he pounded up into his ass. A few deep thrusts later he came, the pleasure
evident in his dark eyes as he cried out hoarsely.
Joshua leaned over him, bracing his hands on either side of Derek’s
head for a long moment before collapsing and rolling to the side. He
hissed softly as Derek’s softening cock slip out of him with an audible pop.
Derek draped one arm over his face and sighed in deep
contentment, drifting into a light doze.

Derek woke abruptly, his hands casting about for the man who had
been with him just moments before. “What the hell? Where did he go?”
The door of his cabin swung open. “Cap’n?”
“Where did he go?” Derek repeated to the crewman in the
doorway.
“Where did who go, sir?” Jenkins asked, a puzzled frown on his
bearded face.
“Joshua!”
“Begging your pardon, Cap’n, but who’s Joshua?
“The man who was just in my bed, the one I’ve been…” He trailed
off as he looked around.
“Having one of them dreams, sir?” Jasper’s expression changed
from one of puzzlement to one of understanding. “God, I love them
dreams! So, what did this one look like? Was he blond? I’m partial to
blonds, meself.”
Derek scrubbed his hand over his face, closing his eyes for a long

moment. “Damn, that felt real.”
“Doesn’t it always, sir, at least until you wake up?”
“Never mind. What did you want, Jenkins?”
“Oh, right,” the sailor said. “Doc told me to let you know, there’s a
storm coming in. Might want to get ready for it, he said.”
He flopped back on the bed, suddenly exhausted. A storm? He
didn’t recall asking for any storms in his pirate scenario. A few battles,
yes. But not any storms. He sighed deeply. “I’ll be up there in a few
minutes.”
“Yes, sir. Very good, sir. I’ll tell him.” The door swung shut behind
the retreating sailor.
Come to think of it, Derek considered, the ship is swaying more
than it was a while ago. The steady pitch and yaw of the boat had
increased to an almost alarming sharpness, he realized. Best get up on
deck.
* * * * *
By the tenth hour of the storm, Derek was openly cursing the
scenario designers. The wind blew fiercely, driving the sea into deep,
angry waves, and he was struggling with a bout of seasickness.
What happened to this being fun? Derek mused silently as he
fought with the tangle of wet ropes at his feet. Burlington, the crewman
whose duty this post was, had been washed overboard three hours earlier.
An incredibly large wave had swept the deck, knocking three sailors from
their feet and carrying them to the railing. Burlington had had the bad
luck of slipping through the gap in the rail where the ladder would be
lowered when in port. He had never surfaced.
Early on, Derek had ordered the sails to be furled before the heavy
wind snapped one of the ship’s two masts. They were far from port, and
any damage the ship sustained would need to be repaired by the crew.
Even those precautions were not enough; one of the crossbeams, loaded
down with soaking wet sailcloth, had snapped and tumbled into the sea.
The rain seemed to be tapering off, and now and again, Derek
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson

thought he saw a small patch of blue in the gray cloud cover. The waves
were gentling as well. Time to take stock.
“Doc,” Derek called. An older man with salt and pepper hair
looked up from where he was applying a bandage to a crewman’s hand.
“How many?
“Just Burlington,” Doc replied and refocused his attention on his
work. “Jenkins broke two fingers, and McGibbon tripped over a rope and
turned his ankle. I don’t think it’s broken; he gave it a sad wrench.”
Derek looked around for Michael Harris, his second‐in‐command.
Finally, he spotted him climbing out of the hold. Derek quickly joined
him. “Any leaks?”
“No, sir, but our stock of gunpowder got wet. It’s ruined. We’re
going to have to make port and restock before we go after the Diamond.”
“Damn!” Derek muttered in frustration. “This storm has already
put us behind schedule. We’ll be hard pressed to catch them now.”
“I know,” Harris commiserated, sweeping a lock of his auburn hair
off his forehead with one hand. “Maybe we should try to catch them on
their next trip.”
“I don’t have the time to wait.” Derek paused to consider his
options. His vacation would be up in two more days. Sometime between
now and then, he needed to track down the Diamond, engage its crew in
battle and steal the treasure the ship was protecting. He sighed deeply and
then straightened his shoulders. “Have the men check all the sails for
tears. We’ve got to make repairs as quickly as possible. Have Jenkins and
Lewis install the replacement crossbeam we have down in the hold.”
“I hope we don’t encounter another storm like this one,” Harris
said. “That’s our only spare crossbeam. Yeah, we could make it home
without it, but it sure would take longer. And I for one am eager to see my
wife, if you know what I mean.” He finished with a tired but naughty
grin.
Derek chuckled and clapped Harris on his wet shoulder. “I’m
going to my cabin, to change my clothes and get a bite to eat. Call me if
you need me.”
“Aye, Captain,” Harris said. “Perhaps you should take a rest as

well. All the rest of us took time during the storm, but not you. Why don’t
you have a lie down?”
“Stop babying me, Harris, I’m a grown man. I can take care of
myself,” Derek replied with a mock growl, leaving for the temptation that
was dry clothes and a hot meal.
In anticipation of his needs, cook had prepared a succulent meal of
fresh roasted chicken, baked potatoes and fresh bread with sweet butter.
Derek poured himself a goblet of wine before he began stripping off his
soaked clothes, letting them fall to the floor with a sodden thud. He
toweled his sandy hair dry with a rough towel as he flopped down on the
bed. Just for a moment, he promised himself. Only going to rest my eyes.

Chapter Six
Director Oblinski thumbed through his appointment list on his
organizer, checking to see if he could get a massage sometime during the
day. If he rearranged the Davis and Andrews appointments, he just might
be able to squeeze in the time. Lord knows I need it, he mused. His
thoughts were interrupted by a soft tap at his door. “Come in.”
It was Samantha Drake, head of technology, and she wore her
customary worried expression. “I’m sorry to intrude, sir, but we’ve had a
bit of a glitch.”
“What sort of glitch?” Oblinski laid his organizer on the desk and
leaned back in his chair. He clasped his hands together over his generous
belly.
“Well, the best I can figure is that the computer was working on
companion elements for two of our guests at the same time. Evidently, it
decided that the guests would be ideal companion elements for each
other,” Drake explained as she came forward to the desk that dominated
the room. Her expression changed to one of pride. “It’s really quite
extraordinary, if I do say so myself, sir. This takes analysis and decision
making to a whole new level for our systems. Almost a technological
breakthrough, if you will.”
“I have yet to see the problem,” Oblinski said, barely stifling an
impatient sigh.
“Well, the computer took one of the guests and inserted him into
the other guest’s scenario.”
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
30
Oblinski stood up quickly and placed his hands on the desk,
leaning forward. “Which guests? Are both guests okay? Safety protocols
only protect the primary guest.”
“It was Joshua Logan and Derek Hawkins. Logan was the one the
computer imported into Hawkin’s pirate scenario,” Drake hedged. “And
technically, yes, they’re both fine.”
“What do you mean ‘technically’? Are they all right or not?”
“Sir, they had sex. Unprotected sex.”
Oblinski felt a cold hand grab at his guts as he slowly sank back
into his chair. The liability issues that this glitch had exposed them
to…well, the guests could bring down the company if one of them had
gotten infected with some kind of sexually transmitted disease. “Shit!”
“But there is some good news, sir. The tertiary program recognized
that there had been bleedover and implemented the safety protocols. The
errant guest has been extracted and returned to his own scenario.”
“Are there going to be psychological repercussions? You moved
him while he was aware, I take it.”
“No, sir,” Drake smiled, “That’s the beauty of it. He fell asleep after
they… you know. They both did, actually, so we were able to do a
controlled export with no psychological implications.”
“Did the guests recognize that they were interacting with another
human? As opposed to one of the scenario’s characters?” Oblinski asked
hopefully.
“I don’t think so.” Derek shook her head, her smile widening.
“Neither of our guests have utilized a companion element before. And
you know, we always tell our clients that it’s as real as you want it to be.”
“Then perhaps we can still save the situation. Run diagnostics to
determine how the error happened in the first place. We’re going to
prepare for an early extraction from scenario P9524. Let Marisa know that
we may need her assistance in the transition,” Director Oblinski ordered.
“Will we be giving the client a refund? If so, I’ll need to contact
accounting so they can prepare a disbursement check,” Sam said as she
headed for the door.
“Absolutely. A full refund with our apologies. Anything to head off

Warm hands squeezed and stroked the muscles of his shoulders.
As Derek came awake, he found himself lying face down on a huge
assortment of cushions. Someone was straddling his naked body and
massaging his back. Very skillfully, Derek noted with one part of his
mind. He groaned in appreciation as a particularly knotted area released
and slowly relaxed.
“Just so you know,” a low voice whispered in his ear, “This ship
already has a captain. That makes you a stowaway.”
Derek’s eyes flew open. “Joshua?” He tried to turn over, but strong
hands pressed his chest into the cushions.
“Uh uh, don’t turn over. I’m not done yet.” Joshua’s hands coaxed
his arms and bent them so that he could pillow his head on his forearms.
Then the other man began massaging his shoulders and back more
vigorously. Derek could not stifle the small grunts of pained pleasure. He
hadn’t realized how sore he was; it made sense, though. He’d been
battling the storm for hours and hours. The storm! Derek suddenly

pressed up onto his elbows to look around.
They were no longer aboard the Eugenia—that much was clear. The
sleek white modern lines of the yacht were trimmed out with brightly
polished chrome, and the ship was nothing like Derek’s ancient wooden
one. In the distance, he could just make out a glimpse of the shore line,
with its towering villas and soaring evergreen trees that looked like giant
green fingers against the incredibly blue sky.
“Where are we?” Derek asked, his voice low and curious.
“Lake Como,” was Joshua’s brief reply.
“How did I get here?”
“I have no idea. I came on deck this morning and there you were,
sleeping on the deck pillows. What happened to you anyway? You’ve got
a huge bruise on your right side. Is it tender?” he asked as he probe
carefully at the purple and black marking on Derek’s left side. “Do you
feel like you’ve broken a rib?”
“No, nothing’s broken. Doc already checked me out. I got hit by a
piece of flying debris—a board broke loose or something.”
“So, you don’t remember how you got here, either? Weird.”
“I woke up to you rubbing my shoulders,” Derek said as he twisted
at the waist and looked over his shoulder at his companion. “Very nice, I
might add.”
Joshua rewarded him with a grin as he ran one hand through his
dark hazel bangs, pushing them off to the side. His green eyes twinkled in
amusement. “So, I suppose you’re going to be looking for a way to earn
your passage, aren’t you?”
Derek glanced down at himself. “I’m naked.”
“Yep.”
“Did we…”
“Have sex? Not yet.” Joshua chuckled as he dismounted and
flopped down on the cushion beside Derek. “Do you want to?”
At the younger man’s playfully provocative question, Derek felt a
sudden heat rush into his groin, and his cock began to thicken. Almost
without thought, he reached down and gave himself a couple of firm
squeezes.
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
34
“I take it that’s a yes?” Joshua asked as he watched Derek’s hand
with avid interest.
“Yes,” Derek murmured with a nod.
“Good!” Joshua pounced on him, rolling Derek over onto his back
and kissing him with relish. His tongue traced Derek’s lips, and then
slipped inside when he parted them ever so slightly. Their tongues
tangled in an eager battle for supremacy. Derek elected to lie back and
allow the younger man to take the lead.
“Nice,” Joshua said softly, panting, as he broke the kiss. His mouth
began to trace a path down Derek’s body, pausing for long moments to
torment his nipples with light nips and soothing strokes of the tongue
before he continued downward.
Derek’s cock was hard and pulsing when Joshua gripped him in his
hand and started to stroke him leisurely, pausing time and again to run
his thumb over the plump ruby head of Derek’s cock, coaxing out clear
drops of pre‐cum. Derek lifted his hips and pressed his cock into Joshua’s
hand with hungry grunts. Finally, he could take no more.
“Suck me,” he ordered, his voice rough with arousal.
“Yes, sir.” Joshua chuckled as he settled down onto his stomach
beside Derek’s hips. He steadied Derek’s cock with one hand and toyed
with his foreskin with the other. He coaxed it down to expose the most
sensitive reddened flesh, split by a tiny slit that was seeping pre‐cum.
With the flat of his tongue, Joshua swirled around the head before
drawing it into his mouth and suckling lightly.
Derek laid one hand on the black hair at the nape of Joshua’s neck,
steadying him before he pressed his cock deeper. His moan of
encouragement seemed to stir the younger man. He sucked hard for a few
deep strokes and then gentled his touch. Next, he allowed the flat of his
tongue to toy with the head of Derek’s cock for a moment, before he
fluttered the tip down the long vein along the underside. The quick touch
and retreat was maddening.
“Joshua,” Derek said, his tone a mixture of warning and plea. The
corners of Joshua’s mouth turned up as he swept his tongue upward again
and circled the glans with light touches. At last, he went to work on
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson

Derek’s cock, sucking him strong and hard, wringing cries of pleasure
from Derek’s lips. Now and again, he paused for a quick nibbling taste of
Derek’s scrotum, but his focus was on Derek’s cock. He leaned back for a
moment and stroked him with one hand, squeezing firmly around the
glans and rolling the foreskin over the glistening red head.
“Do you want to come in my mouth?” he asked in throaty
invitation.
“Fuck, yeah!” Derek panted.
“I thought as much,” Joshua said with a naughty grin. He flicked
his tongue over the slit of Derek’s cock and lapped away the pre‐cum
gathered there. He gave his own prick several hard tugs.
Derek brushed aside Joshua’s hand and grabbed himself. He began
stroking rapidly, two fingers rubbing that most sensitive area beneath the
glans. The muscles in his stomach and thighs began to jerk, his balls
tightening pleasurably.
“I’m going to do it,” he warned quietly. Joshua flicked his tongue
over the head, leaving the tip against it, and waited. “Oh, fuck, I’m going
to come.”
The first spasm hit him as a creamy jolt of semen splashed Joshua’s
lips and cheek. His tongue lapped hungrily as spurt after spurt sped forth
from Derek’s aching cock. Derek’s moans of pained pleasure soon tapered
off to breathy sighs of appreciation.

“Damn it!” Samantha cursed loudly. Beside her, Amelia jumped
and knocked over her coffee cup.
“What?” she asked, as she used an old forecast report to wipe up
the mess.
“We’ve had another bleedover!” I can’t believe this. It’s the same
two clients.”
“P9524?”
“And M5866,” Samantha said with a nod.
“That’s damned peculiar! Who’d of thought there’d be two
malfunctions involving the same clients?”
“I’m beginning to think it’s not a malfunction. Have Swensen check
the code for both scenarios, would you? I’m going to go talk to Oblinski,”
she said with a heavy sigh. “He’s not going to be happy about this.”

“Damn it!” Director Oblinski slammed one hand down on the clear
glass surface of the large desk. It curved around him, matching the
rounded line of his well‐padded belly. “I thought you pulled Logan back
into his own scenario.”
“I did, sir. I did it myself. It’s Hawkins this time.”
“Hawkins is in the Lake Como scene?”
“Yes, sir.”

“How did this happen, Drake?”
“I’m not sure. I’ve got Swensen running the code on it right now. I
can look at the history and see if I can determine what was happening
when the transfer took place,” Drake offered with a sweep on her hand.
“But as far as I know, everything is working perfectly.”
“Well, that can’t be. If it were working properly, we wouldn’t be in
this mess, now would we?” Frustration filled the man’s voice and
gestures.

Chapter Nine
Lassitude filled Derek’s body as the aftereffects of his orgasm
tapered off deliciously. He lifted his head from the cushions to glance at
the young man beside him, his gaze following as Joshua stroked himself
leisurely.
“So, can I fuck you now?” Joshua asked. “Or are you strictly a
top?”
“Not strictly. More like usually,” he said, his voice drawling with a
bit of his West Virginia accent, as often happened when he was tired or
under stress. Definitely not stressed now, though. “That was incredible.”
“Thanks!” Joshua said with a cheeky grin. “I am good at it, aren’t
I?”
“Yes, you are.” Derek chuckled at his companion’s cheekiness.
“Had lots of practice, have you?”
“Some,” Joshua replied with a nod. “But let’s just say you inspired
me, shall we?”
Derek snorted and allowed his head to drop back against the
pillows. His eyes drifted closed for a long moment, but Joshua had other
plans.
“Nope, no falling asleep just yet, Captain. Your cabin boy needs a
little attention, if you get my meaning,” Joshua said playfully as he
grabbed a bottle of suntan oil from a small table that stood beside the
cushions. He quickly poured the liquid into the palm of his hand and
slicked himself with it before he leaned over to steal another kiss from
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
39
Derek’s lips.
His breath feathered over Derek’s scruffy whiskered chin in a
subtle tease before he kissed him. Derek parted his lips eagerly, and they
tangled their tongues in a fiery dance, each striving for dominance in the
kiss. When they broke apart at last, Derek was panting, and his cock was
firming again.
Joshua draped his body over Derek’s, his oiled cock rubbing
sensuously against the prone man’s groin and muscled abdomen. Derek
slipped one hand between them and grasped Joshua’s hardness in a firm
grip. Joshua moaned in appreciation as he began to thrust vigorously into
Derek’s hand.
“Feels good,” he murmured throatily. “Keep doing that.”
Derek tightened his grip and then, to be perverse, loosened it so
that his hand barely made contact with the satiny skin of Joshua’s prick.
Joshua hissed a bit, then chuckled at Derek’s teasing.
“Bastard!” he said quietly. “Harder, damn it!”
“Bastard, is it? What do you know about my mother?” Derek
teased him.
“Nothing; now just do it harder.”
“I’ll do you harder, boy,” Derek said as he abruptly rolled the two
of them over so that Joshua lay on his back. He leaned down and kissed
him hungrily, his tongue sweeping into Joshua’s open mouth with a
forceful dominance, one that elicited a groan of pleasure from the younger
man. He pushed Joshua’s legs apart with one knee and settled in between
them. His kisses gentled as he softly nipped Joshua’s lips with his teeth,
and then laved the abused flesh with the tip of his agile tongue.
“So good,” Joshua murmured between kisses as he tangled his
fingers in the long locks of Derek’s hair, tugging it a bit.
“Gets better,” Derek said, promise coloring his voice before he
kissed Joshua again. He placed a hand on either side of Joshua’s head and
levered himself up, breaking off the kiss. As he rocked back on his heels
between Joshua’s spread legs, he retrieved the bottle of suntan oil the
other man had discarded earlier. He poured the liquid into his palm and
liberally coated his cock with it. He snapped the top closed and tossed the
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson

bottle among a stack of cushions, then took himself in hand as he crept
forward on his knees.
Joshua obligingly lifted his legs and separated his knees. Derek
pressed the tip of his hardness against the other man’s opening and
slowly slipped inside. Gradually, inch by inch, he pushed until he was
settled to the base of his cock. Joshua’s sigh of pained pleasure told Derek
the younger man was enjoying this. Derek withdrew and pressed home
again, slowly, gently, letting Joshua’s body acclimate to the invasion.
Again and again, he withdrew slowly, almost allowing the tip of his cock
to pull free of Joshua’s body before pushing back.
“Harder,” Joshua said in a softly encouraging tone. “Do it like you
want to do it.”
Derek withdrew and abruptly slammed home, wrenching a groan
from the other man. He watched as Joshua grasped his own cock in his
hand and began stroking himself vigorously. Derek closed his eyes for a
moment and focused on the intense pleasure Joshua’s tight passage was
giving him. It was so good. He snapped his hips forward, feeling the snug,
velvety heat envelop his prick and clamp down on it. He opened his eyes
when Joshua began to keen softly.
Joshua was close. His cheeks and upper chest were flushing a light
pink as his arousal built. With a sudden cry of pleasure, Joshua erupted,
spilling his seed on his chest and taut abdomen in glistening droplets.
Watching Joshua take his pleasure intensified Derek’s own arousal
to a fever pitch. He slammed into the other man again and again, his
rhythm becoming less even as his orgasm built and built inside him. He
felt his balls tighten deliciously just before he came, deep inside the other
man. He took a few more lazy strokes as he rode out his pleasure; then he
stilled. Soon, all he heard was the sound of some water birds calling as
they flew overhead, and the lap of the waves against the hull of the yacht.
“Definitely worth every cent,” Derek murmured low as he carefully
withdrew from his lover and collapsed bonelessly on the cushions beside
him, one hand on Joshua’s flat belly, where he touched a fingertip to the
seed that glistened under the late afternoon sun.
“What?” Joshua asked, propping himself up on his elbows.
Virtually by Chance by Amanda Grayson
41
“I said, you’re definitely worth every cent,” Derek replied,
speaking a bit louder this time.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I’m just saying that this vacation is worth every penny I spent on
it,” Derek said, pressing himself up onto one elbow as well.
“Every penny you spent on it? You mean every penny I spent,
don’t you?”
The two men looked at each other, shadowed expressions of
concern building on each man’s face, a mirror image to the other. The
truth seemed to come to both men at about the same time.
“You mean to tell me—?” Derek started.
“You’re not a computer‐generated companion?” Joshua completed
his sentence.
“No!” both men said at the same time.
They stared at each other in dismay for a long moment.
“Who are you?” Derek asked.
“I told you. My name’s Joshua Logan. I’m in advertising.”
“Oh, fuck,” Derek said as he rolled onto his back and covered his
face with both hands.
“Who are you? You told me you were Derek Hawkins, a pirate,”
Joshua said as he sat up.
Joshua sat up as well. “I am Derek Hawkins. I was only playing at
being a pirate. I’m a tax accountant.”
“You’re joking, right? I mean, aren’t most tax accountants, well,
total geeks?”
“Yep, most of us are that.”
A silence rose between them, broken only by the sound of waves
breaking against the hull of the yacht. Derek rubbed at his eyes. He felt a
headache building behind them.
“You didn’t use a condom,” Joshua said, his tone filled with dread.
“No, I didn’t think I needed one. I didn’t know you were real.”
“Are you gay?” Joshua asked.
“I’m bisexual,” Derek replied. Understanding Joshua’s unspoken
fear, a fear he shared, he added, “But I’ve been tested recently, and I’m

clean.”
“Oh, thank God!” came Joshua’s fervent response.
“May I assume you’re okay, too?”
“Yep. I’m gay, but I’ve never had unprotected sex. I mean, I’ve
never had it before,” he corrected himself. “Guess I won’t be saying that
from now on, huh?”
“Guess not,” Derek agreed morosely. “Look, I’m really sorry. I
would never have—”
“Well, what’s done is done. I guess we’ll both still need to get
checked when we get out of here.”
“Yeah,” Joshua said. “Maybe we should contact the staff. I’m
surprised no one has noticed you’re not in the proper scenario.”
“Still not sure how I got here. Do you think someone could have
done this? Put us together intentionally?”
“That’s a good question. Why would someone do this? I mean,
there was no guarantee we’d have sex with each other. For all they knew,
you might have been completely straight.”
Derek snorted a dismissal. “Not hardly.”
“Yes, but how would the staff know that?”
“The staff wouldn’t necessarily know it; the computer, on the other
hand, knows me inside and out.”
“So you think this is some kind of computer glitch?”
“It’s possible,” Derek said. “It makes sense, in a way. Otherwise,
wouldn’t the staff have retrieved us already?”
Joshua stood up and grabbed his discarded swim trunks, stepping
into them. He looked around and found a towel for Derek to wrap around
his waist. “Come on, let’s go use the communications system to contact
the staff.”
* * * * *
As a safety precaution, each guest was given some information
about the scenario he or she had chosen, chief amongst this being how to
contact the staff should the need arise. Technology was concealed in

everyday objects that would be native to a given scene. In the pirate
scenario, Derek had been told he could use the captain’s log to contact the
staff. All he had to do was write the words “staff attention requested” on
one of the pages of the ledger; the computer would then notify the
appropriate parties. On the yacht, the technology was housed in what
was, coincidentally, the communications unit on the bridge of the ship.
Derek followed Joshua onto the small but well‐equipped bridge.
The captain nodded briefly to the two men and then turned his attention
back to the charts spread out over the console before him. Joshua paused
beside the communications unit and flipped a switch. “Staff attention
requested.”
The computer gave a few whirring noises, then ground down to a
halt. Joshua snapped the toggle switch back and forth a few times,
repeating his words, but nothing happened.
“It would appear that we are cut off,” he said to Derek. “At least for
now. Captain, this unit seems to be malfunctioning. Will you have one of
the crew look into it?”
“Of course, monsieur, right away,” said the white‐haired captain.
He stepped to the door and called down to one of the crew on the deck
below. “Haynes, come check on this comm unit. It’s not working
properly.”
“Aye, Captain,” came the disembodied voice of the sailor.
“Why don’t we see if we can find you some trousers?” Joshua
suggested to Derek, who nodded in agreement. “Perhaps there will be
something you can wear in the main cabin. Though I must say, you wear a
towel well.”

“Nope, too short,” Derek said as he cast aside another pair of
trousers.
“I’ve got one of the crew scaring up some more for you to try. Want
a drink while we wait?” Joshua asked.
“Scotch on the rocks, please.”
The crisp tinkle of the ice against the glass was the only sound in
the room. Derek paced the cabin restlessly; the towel knotted at his hips
offered him a modicum of modesty, though he supposed, after the
intimate encounters between them, he should be comfortable with Joshua
by now.
The cabin was tastefully decorated in navy blue and burgundy,
with a touch of green here and there in the form of live plants. There were
windows along two sides of the cabin, which allowed in a great deal of
natural light. The navy blue sectional sofa followed the line of the curved
wall on one side, and a wet bar with stools filled the other. A deep
burgundy area rug covered the polished hardwood floors under the

asymmetrical black coffee table.
Derek cast himself down on one section of the couch, not caring
that his towel draped open a bit, revealing a hint of his groin. He dropped
his head against the upright back of the sofa and allowed his eyes to drift
closed for few moments. When Joshua brought his drink, he sat up and
rearranged his towel. Joshua passed over the cocktail glass with a slight
bow. “Your scotch, Captain.”
Derek murmured his thanks before he tossed back a large swig of
the amber liquid. It bit ever so slightly before mellowing in his mouth.
That mellowness followed down into Derek’s chest, and he sighed with
pleasure. He was warm, comfortable, sated, and he didn’t want to move.
Still, something must be done to resolve the situation.
“They told me when I came in that they transported us when we
were sedated,” Derek said.
“I was asleep when I moved from Lake Como to your scenario.
And you were out when you showed up on deck earlier,” Joshua said
with a gesture of his thumb toward the door to the cabin.
“So, if I go back to sleep, maybe the computer will move me into
my correct scenario. Then, I can try to contact the staff.”
Joshua frowned for a moment. “Maybe I can come with you. I
mean, if I go to sleep too, it’s possible that the computer will move me as
well. It does seem to want to keep us together, wouldn’t you agree?”
“So it would appear,” Derek agreed.
“I’ve got access to some tablets. We could take them and go lie
down in my cabin.”
“It’s worth a shot, I suppose.”
“I’ll go collect the tablets from the ship’s doctor. Why don’t you go
make yourself comfortable in my cabin? It’s the one at the end of the
corridor.”
“I think I’ll take a quick shower. One of the amenities of the
modern world that I miss from my scenario.”
Joshua laughed. “I may join you.”
“Always welcome,” Derek replied as the two men went in separate
directions.

Chapter Eleven
Joshua could hear Derek singing in the shower when he entered the
main cabin of the yacht. He could not contain the chuckle when Derek hit
an exceptionally sour note, one he held for what seemed like hours. Nice
to know he’s not perfect, Joshua thought.
He placed the two tablets on the table and poured himself a glass of
water from a chilled bottle in the mini‐fridge. Joshua wandered the room
aimlessly, picking up objects and then returning them to their rightful
place. At last he picked up a hardcover book and plunked down in one of
the room’s twin armchairs. He lifted his right foot and propped it on the
coffee table that stood before the sectional sofa.
“Didn’t your mother ever tell you not to put your feet on the
furniture?” Derek asked from the doorway. He still wore a towel wrapped
around his lean hips, but this time, water droplets dotted his upper torso.
Joshua watched in odd fascination as a droplet grew at the tip of a damp
lock of hair. It fell, and Joshua studied the path it left down Derek’s left
pectoral muscle.
“God, you’re beautiful,” Joshua said in a hushed tone.
Derek grinned slightly as he entered the room, a faint blush
coloring his aristocratic cheekbones. “Yeah, well, I bet you say that to all
the captains.”
“Nope,” Joshua replied. “You’re still the first.”
“Yeah, well,” Derek said as he glanced over at the table, “I see you
got the pills.”

“No problem. ‘We are programmed to meet your needs’ and all
that.” Joshua stood and crossed the room, picking up the tablets. He
offered them to Derek. “Take your pick. One’s as good as the other.”
Derek picked up a tablet, his movements a bit cautious. “Are we
sure this is going to work? I mean, what if we get separated but we’re still
stuck in this…thing?” He gestured around them with the hand that held
the pill between thumb and forefinger.
“I don’t know about you, Derek, but I for one do not like being
manipulated. One of the main things that drew me to Virtual Suites was
that I got to choose what happened to me. I chose the scenario I wanted; I
selected the option of having a companion; hell, even the food in my
scenario is specifically geared toward my palate. As much as I’ve enjoyed
the sex with you, and trust me, it’s been hot! As much as I’ve enjoyed it, it
wasn’t my choice.”
“You’re not saying that I raped you, are you?”
“Of course not. If I remember correctly, I’ve been the aggressor in
both encounters, so you did not rape me. I just don’t like have my choices
taken away from me. Would I have had sex with you if I had known you
were a real person? Definitely. But we would have taken the proper
precautions.”
“Yeah, I would have wanted to have sex with you as well,” Derek
agreed. “Maybe even gotten to know you a bit first, drawn it out, so to
speak.”
“Derek Hawkins, are you saying you would have courted me?”
Joshua asked with a teasing grin.
“Maybe,” was Derek’s non‐committal response, the blush returning
to his cheeks for a second time. “Would there be something wrong with
that?”
“No! It’s just I’ve never been properly courted, in the old‐fashioned
sense of the word.”
“So, maybe when we get out of here, you might like to see me
again?” Joshua asked, the teasing warming the tone of his voice as well
now.
Derek studied him for a few moments. Joshua felt himself color

under Derek’s scrutiny and had to resist the urge to squirm on his feet. At
last Derek spoke. “Yes. I believe I would like that.”
Joshua felt a smile playing at the corner of his lips, one which grew
broader and fuller by the moment. He said softly, in a rather shy voice, “I
believe I would like that, too.”
An awkward silence rose up between them for a moment. Then
Joshua busied himself by pouring Derek a glass of water. He popped the
other pill into his mouth and held up his bottle to Derek’s glass. “See you
on the other side?”
“See ya,” Derek replied as he took his pill. The two men went to sit
side by side on the large sectional sofa. Joshua propped one foot up on the
coffee table and said, in a slightly slurring voice, “Yes, my mama said not
to put my feet on her furniture. But the way I look at it, for right now, this
is my furniture, and I can do what I want with it.”
“Good to know,” Derek said and propped his feet on the coffee
table as well. “My mama and your mama would have gotten along
famously, I think.”
“Maybe we can…introduce…them,” Joshua said as he drifted off,
his head pillowed against Derek’s broad shoulder.
“Maybe…” Derek said as he followed him into sleep.

Derek awoke in the large bed in his cabin on the Eugenia. He
stretched for a moment and yawned, his jaw making its customary noisy
crack. His hand came down on warm flesh beside him, and Derek rolled
onto his side to spoon up behind his companion.
“Captain? Are you awake?” The voice was low and decidedly
feminine. Definitely not that of Joshua Logan. Derek sat up.
“Who are you?”
“I am Lola, Captain, your companion element. Would you like to
make love? Or are you hungry? I can fetch you something to eat, if you’d
like,” she said as she drew one dark hand down his bicep.
Derek jumped from the bed and hastened to the captain’s desk. He
leafed through the documents until he found the captain’s log. Turning to
the back cover, he picked up his quill and wrote, “Guest requires
attention.”
“This is Guest Services, how may I assist you?”
“I need an early extract.”

“Very good. If you would be so kind as to lie down on the bed, we
will be extracting you momentarily. I would advise you keep your eyes
closed during the process. It will be less intrusive on you psychologically
if you do so.”

“What do you mean you cannot give me any information? I know
his name, Joshua Logan. Now all I need is a number where I can contact
him.” Derek struggled to keep the frustration out of his voice.
“You must understand our position, Derek. It goes completely
against policy to give personal information out on any of our guests.”
Director Oblinski was apologetic but firm.
“Very well.” Derek sighed. Rising, he pulled a data card from his
pocket. “If he should ask for me, please feel free to give him this. It has all
my contact information on it.”
“Certainly. And I hope you’ll join us again.”

Derek’s fingers flew over his keyboard as he worked on a
complicated formula related to the tax sub brackets of an estate tax filing.
A part of his mind registered that someone had stopped beside his
cubicle, and he felt a twinge of irritation. He was running short on time,
and he certainly didn’t have time to chat. Pointedly, he ignored his visitor.
It was only when a gold doubloon landed on his desk, spinning before
rattling to a heads‐up position, that he looked up.
“Hello, Captain.” The dark‐haired man wore a cocky grin as he
leaned one hip against Derek’s desk. “Did you miss me?”
Derek felt his lips twitch as a smile threatened to overwhelm his face. He
stood up and slipped one hand behind the nape of Joshua’s neck, his
touch gentle. “How did you find me?”
“Oh, it was easy.” Joshua’s fingers reached out to toy with Derek’s
necktie. “I offered to give Oblinski a substantial discount on his

advertising campaign if he’d let me sneak a peek at your file.”
“And that worked? Maybe I should have offered to do his taxes for
him,” Derek said before he leaned in and kissed Joshua soundly.
