MV process general
This chapter describes the most common processes seen from the library
implementations in LIB 500 and LIB 510 revision 4.0.3.
1.1.
Station/process picture
1.1.1.
Picture specific functions
A process picture is located in the picture specific area and consists of the picture
functions installed. The medium voltage process objects are typical example of
picture specific functions. Picture specific functions are activated during run mode:
by clicking on the representation symbol with the mouse and selecting the wanted
function.

Various kinds of dialogs are opened when clicking, e.g. on the picture functions in
the Bay. These dialogs do often also contain subdialogs. Both dialogs and
subdialogs contain a help function, giving further assistance, if needed.
The procedure for handling a function in an operation dialog is just to click on the
function to be executed. A request to verify the operation is given, before executing,
otherwise the user cannot regret the operation.
The object messages are giving actual information and status regarding the object.
For example, in the above picture (see Fig. 1.1.1.-1) the object is a circuit breaker
that is not connected to the process.
1.2.
Graphical representations and functionality
Some principles are general and used for all MV functions (symbols and colors etc.).
A description of these general principles is given in this section.
1.2.1.
Switching devices status indication
The status presentation for an object consists of three parts: a representation symbol,
a color and a suffix. These three define the exact object status. The relationship
between color and suffix indication can be defined in the Application Settings.
Either color or suffix or even both of them can be selected for status indication.
1.2.2.
Color coding and suffixes
The current state is indicated by different symbols. The color or/and suffix of the
symbol gives additional information on the object.
Table 1.2.2-1
Colors and suffixes
4
Circuit breaker
Other symbols can be used.
5
Relay symbol
Several functions can be activated, that is
depending on the device behind the symbol.
6
Measuring functions
The measurings can be presented in different
ways (preconfigured).
7
Earth switch
Other symbols can be used.
8
Trip tag
A trip tag shows the reason for tripping, like
overcurrent, earth fault current etc. An auto
reclosing tag is also available.
9
Transformer
Other symbols can be used.

Selection
Selectable objects are highlighted according to motif standard. There are no
“hidden” functions.
Please note that selectable is not equal to controllable. Clicking on a selectable
object will bring up the main dialog from which other actions can be initiated. By
default only one object can be selected per MicroSCADA screen; selecting another
object will cancel the previous selection.
1.3.
Controlling switching devices
1.3.1.
Main control dialog, circuit breaker
The circuit breaker main control dialog is aimed for monitoring and controlling the
circuit breaker.
Functionality
Operations can be made if the circuit breaker is motorised (i.e. remotely
controllable), the operator authorisation level is Control (1) or higher, the circuit
breaker state allows controls, and if there are no active blockings. If operations are
allowed, the button Open breaker or Close breaker will respectively be active.
The main control dialog shows messages of the circuit breaker status on the
information bar. Only the most important message is shown, but all active messages
can be seen in the Object messages dialog by selecting it under the More... button.
Active messages can be seen in the Object messages dialog and more detailed
explanations of their meaning can be found in Help.

When the option Open breaker or Close breaker is selected, the selection command
is sent to the control unit. Before the operation is carried out, the user has to verify
the operation in the confirmation dialog. In case there are errors e.g. in the
communication, a SCIL status code is shown. The actual meaning of the code can
be found in the Status Codes Manual.
If the circuit breaker objects are not connected to the process, the dialog simulates
the actual operation within database.
Other supported features are accessible by the More... button. Help on each
subdialog is found by clicking the sub-dialogs Help button.

Common functions
This chapter gives a description of the functions that are common to most of the
standard functions in the MV Process software package. The functions that are
individual or available for only a few standard functions within the MV Process are
described in connection to the corresponding standard function. In this common
function section, the switching device will be used as an example function, but the
principle is the same for all MV Process standard functions.
1.4.1.
Alarm state dialog
The alarm state dialog can be opened by selecting Alarm state... which can be found
by clicking the More button in the main control dialog.
The dialog presents all persisting or fleeting alarms for the device, bay or substation
depending on the selected standard function, and the unacknowledged alarms can be
acknowledged.
Functionality
The persisting and fleeting alarms can be seen in a combo-box. If there are no
alarms, the combo-box does not contain any text. In case there is one alarm, the
object identifier is shown in the combo-box. If there are more than one alarm, the
text Acknowledge all is shown in the combo-box by default. In that case all existing
alarms can be viewed by scrolling the combo-box up and down.
The currently selected alarm can be acknowledged by pressing the Acknowledge
alarm button. The button is active, if an unacknowledged alarm is present and the
authorization level of the operator is Control (1) or higher.

e.g. the printer is not defined for the signal(s). In this case the text identifying the
blocking is written in grey color.
• There are no signals found to be blocked/deblocked. The reason may be that no
process database is created for the object or there is a configuration error. This
situation is also indicated by an information message.

Description
The standard function of the station is used for controlling and monitoring the station
related functions. The main functionality is as listed below:
• Station local/remote-switch indication
• Station local/remote-switch control (if remotely controllable)
• Status information
The position of the station local/remote-switch is shown as a text in the lower part
of the picture function. The status is normally indicated by different colors. In
addition to the color coding, the abnormal status is indicated by an information
message in dialogs.
By default, the standard function is obligatory for every MV substation (LIB 510/
MV Process) because it is used for defining the control authority level for the
substation. If there are several pictures for the same substation, e.g. overview, MV-
busbar, HV-busbar, protection, etc., it is sufficient to have the station picture
function in one of these pictures.
It is also possible to configure the other picture functions e.g. switching device,
measurement, etc. to operate without station. For further information, please refer to
the manuals for used picture functions.
The standard function for the station has the following sub-functionality:
• Alarm state/acknowledgement for all alarms within a selected substation
• Station blocking/deblocking of update, control, alarm, event, printout and
reprocessing within the database
• Data update facility for the entire substation
• Object messages

2.4.2.
Main dialog
The station main dialog is for monitoring and controlling the station local/remote-
switch.
All functionality related to the station local/remote-switch is relevant only if the
picture function has been configured to exist i.e. it is visible.
Functionality
The station local/remote-switch position is indicated by radio buttons if it has been
defined as remotely controllable. The check-box indications will be used if the L/R-
switch is manually controllable.
The insensitive button is the button with a grey label whereas the sensitive buttons
have a black label. Only the sensitive buttons can be activated. If the button is
insensitive, the reason could be:
• control center does not have the authority to control this substation
• the operator does not have the authority to perform the operation
• control is out of use/can be used manually only
• discrepancy in database configuration; some objects are connected to the process,
some are not
• control has been blocked
• the station is already in local control
• communication with the process unit is lost
The dialog shows messages of the station local/remote-switch state on the
information bar. Only the most important message is shown, but all active messages
can be seen in the Object messages dialog which can be found by clicking the
More... button. Active messages can be seen in the Object messages dialog, and
more detailed explanations of their meaning can be found in Help.
If the station local/remote-switch is not connected to the process, the dialog
simulates the actual operation within the database.
Other supported features are made available when clicking the More... button. Help
on each subdialog can be found by clicking the Help button in the sub-dialog.

Description
The standard function of the bay is used for controlling and monitoring the bay
related functions. The main functionality is as listed below:
• Bay local/remote-switch indication
• Bay local/remote-switch control (if remotely controllable)
• Status information
The position of the bay local/remote-switch is shown as a text in the lower part of
the picture function. The status is normally indicated by different colors. In addition
to the color coding, the abnormal status is indicated by an information message in
dialogs.
By default the standard function is obligatory for every bay (LIB 510/MV Process)
because it is used for defining the control authority for the bay. If there are several
pictures for the same bay e.g. overview, detailed zoom window etc., it is sufficient
to have the bay picture function in one of these pictures.
It is also possible to configure the other picture functions e.g. switching device,
measurement, etc. to operate without bay. For further information, please refer to the
manuals for used picture functions.
The standard function of the bay has the following sub-functionality:
• Alarm state/acknowledgement for all alarms within the selected bay
• Bay blocking/deblocking of update, control, alarm, event, printout and
reprocessing within the database
• Bay interlocking
• Data update facility for the entire bay

Bay dialogs
This chapter describes the dialogs of the MV Process bay. These dialogs are found
in the directory LIB4/FMOD/MVPROCESS/USE and they can be opened by
clicking the bay picture function or the More... menu in the bay main dialog.
3.4.1.
Object presentation
The current bay local/remote-switch position is indicated by different texts. The
color of the symbol gives additional information about the status. Please refer to the
General chapter in this MV Process Operator’s Manual regarding the color and the
corresponding status.
3.4.2.
Main dialog
The bay main dialog is for monitoring and controlling the bay local/remote-switch.
All functionality related to the bay local/remote-switch is relevant only if the
physical local/remote-switch exists, i.e. it has been configured to exist during the
system engineering.
Functionality
Radio-buttons show the position of the bay local/remote-switch if it has been
defined as remotely controllable. The check-box indications will be used if the bay
L/R-switch is manually controllable.
The insensitive button is the button with a grey label whereas the sensitive buttons
have a black label. Only the sensitive buttons can be activated.
If the button is insensitive, the reason could be:
• The control center does not have the authority to control this substation
• The operator does not have the authority to perform the operation
• Control is out of use/to be used manually only
• Discrepancy in database configuration; some objects are connected to the
process, some are not
• Control has been blocked
• Bay is already in a disabled control
• Communication with the process unit is lost
The dialog shows messages of the bay local/remote-switch state on the information
bar. Only the most important message is shown, but all active messages can be seen
in the Object messages dialog which can be found by clicking the More... button.
Active messages can be seen in the Object messages dialog, and more detailed
explanations of their meaning can be found in Help.
If the bay local/remote-switch is not connected to the process, the dialog simulates
the actual operation within the database.
Other supported features are made available when clicking the More... button. Help
on each subdialog can be found by clicking the Help button in the sub-dialog.

Switching device dialogs
This chapter describes the dialogs of the MV Process switching device. These
dialogs are found in the directory LIB4/FMOD/MVPROCESS/USE and they can be
opened by clicking the switching device picture function or the More... menu of the
switching device main control dialog.
4.4.1.
Object presentation
The current state is presented by different symbols. The color and/or suffix of the
symbol gives additional information about the status. Please refer to the General
chapter in this MV Process Operator’s Manual regarding the color and the
corresponding status.
4.4.2.
Main control dialog
The switching device main control dialog is aimed for monitoring and controlling of
the switching device e.g. circuit breaker.
Functionality
Operations can be made, if the switching device is motorized (i.e. remotely
controllable), the authorization level of the operator is Control (1) or higher, the
switching device state as well as the station and bay local/remote-switch allow
controls. If operations are allowed, the respective button Open Switch... or Close
Switch... will be active.
The main control dialog shows messages of the switching device status on the
information bar. Only the most important message is shown, but all active messages
can be seen in the Object Messages dialog which can be found by selecting the
More... button. Active messages can be seen in the Object Messages dialog, and
more detailed explanations of their meaning can be found in Help.
Depending on the used control method, the selection Open Switch... or Close
Switch... is either sent to the control unit or just used as an internal tag. Before the
operation is carried out, the user has to verify the operation in the Control
Confirmation Dialog. In case of errors e.g. in the communication, a SCIL error code
is shown. The actual meaning of the code can be found in the system documentation
or in the on-line help (by typing STATUS x in the command prompt window, where
x stands for the error code number).

5.1.
Description
)LJ 7KUHHW\SHVRIPHDVXUHPHQWV\PEROVV\PEROKRUL]RQWDODQGYHUWLFDO
The purpose of the measurement function is to provide an easy and a fast way to
monitor the processes on the picture. The measurements are presented as numerical
values, as bars or just as a measurement symbol depending on the configuration. The
advantage of presenting the measurements as bars is that the alarm and warning
limits are shown together with the measurement, hence the level of the measurement
compared to the limits is very obvious. Different colors show the state (normal,
warning or alarm) of the measurement. The measurement dialog is opened by
clicking the measurement symbol. The subfunctions can be opened or settings can
be changed in this dialog. The presentation of the measurements (except for the fast
trending function) is thought using the configuration made by the Standard
Configuration Tool, when the picture is opened next time. Each measurement
function consists of 1 to 4 measurement values of the analog input (AI) type or pulse
counters (PC) for energy measurements.
The measurement also contains 6 subfunctions under the More button in the
Measurement dialog. These functions are described separately in this document. A
brief summary is provided below:

Fast trending
Overview
The Fast Trend (FT) is a graphical on-line follow-up for process data of the analog
input data type (AI data). This process data is selected from the Measurement dialog.
There are two sizes of the fast trend, a small FT and a zoomed FT. The FT can also
be configured to start automatically when the station picture is opened.
One supervised process data is shown in each trend. Several trends can be open at
the same time on a single monitor, but only one trend can be open for each measured
value. The same trend can be shown in other monitors as well. The FT window is
movable on the station picture and the latest location is saved and used next time the
trend is used.
The trending of e.g. measurements in MicroSCADA is normally done with sampling
intervals between 30 s to 10 min. However, sometimes there is a need for faster
sampling, e.g. in industrial and power plant applications. The Fast Trend is capable
of using shorter sampling periods, from 1 s and upwards (steps: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50
and 100 s).

alarm limits. If no alarm limits are set, the maximal and minimal values for the
process data in question will be used instead. The Y axis scale can also be set in the
Settings dialog.
The colors for the background and the curve can be changed in the Settings dialog
where also sampling interval and step size can be changed. The curve shows
approximately 180 samples backwards (a full trend in the FT window).

Process database
The Fast Trend function utilises the process database connected to the measurement
picture function for getting the needed data for the curves.
Summary of functional description
The Fast Trend is opened from the measurement symbol in the station picture. The
first of the four measurements on the folders as well as the option Fast trending...
from the More pull down menu have to be selected. This opens the small Fast Trend,
while the zoomed Fast Trend is opened from the small Fast Trend. The Fast Trend
is opened on a default location if opened for the first time, thereafter it is opened
from the latest location, but can be moved into another location when needed by
dragging with the mouse on the label bar. There can also be several trend curves
open at the same time. The FT shows the selected measurement in the form of a
graph, hence enabling a short historic of the measurement. The alarm and warning
limits are marked with lines in the FT window. The trend curves can also be opened
automatically when the station picture is opened.
The trends are drawn from the measurement values (process objects) taken from the
process database. The process database is updated with new values according to the
system configuration, mostly based on delta values. As a result, updating is
spontaneous when the delta value is exceeded. This means that the trend is using this
process value, in other words, the FT can be updated faster than new values come to
the process data base. This is no problem, the same value will be provided by the
process data base until a new value is received.
Settings for the Fast Trends are made from the zoomed Fast Trend by clicking
Settings.

The Fast Trend windows can be moved on the station picture by dragging its
labelbar with the mouse onto the new location. This position is saved and the next
time FT is started, it will automatically be located in that place. The FT window is a
graph with X-axis for time and Y-axis for the monitored process object. Scrolling
backwards the historic data is possible within the time axis. The alarm and warning
limits are also drawn as lines in the graph. By default, (first start-up) the trend is set
to set the Y-axis scale to minus 10% of the lower and plus 10% of the upper alarm
limit, which can also be done from the Settings dialog (available in the zoomed FT).
The sampling interval is by default 2 seconds, but can be set between 1 s and 100 s
in steps of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 or 100 s. The Settings dialog also admits the change of
background and drawing colors. These settings are stored when closing the small FT
and taken into use when the following sampling is performed.
If the alarm limits are not set, the min and max values will be recorded since the last
reset of registered values (done from the measurement window) can be used for the
scaling of the Y-axis. If the min and max are similar and no alarm levels are set, the
FT is shown just around the actual value.
When the measured values are outside the alarm limits, the curve is drawn as a line
up or down in the trend curve window.
The curve is continued from the last sampling and goes from left to right. The
amount of samplings that the curve is moved leftwards after reaching the end of the
X-axis is set from the Settings dialog (Stepsize). The curve can contain upto about
180 samplings.
The Fast Trend is equipped with a label bar that contains identification about the
measured object. This label is changed from the Settings dialog. By dragging this
label bar with the mouse, the FT can be moved into another location.

Main control dialog for SPAU 341
The transformer main control dialog is aimed for monitoring and controlling the
transformer.
Functionality
Operations can be made, if the authorization level of the operator is Control (1) or
higher and the transformer state allows controls. Only the buttons for allowed
operations are available to the user. Before the operation is carried out, the user has
to verify the operation in a confirmation dialog.
The main control dialog shows messages of the transformer status on the
information bar. Only the most important message is shown. However, all active
messages can be seen in the dialog Object messages which can be found by clicking
the More... button. Active messages can be seen in the dialog Object messages, and
more detailed explanations of their meaning can be found in Help.
The tap position is viewed in the field at the bottom right side of the dialog box. In
the same dialog it is also possible to find information about the lowest possible tap
position, the highest possible position and the current tap position.
The single/parallel setting is selected on the left side of the dialog box. If the
regulators are hard-wired together, the master-slave principle is used and either the
master or the slave mode can be selected from the drop-down list box.
If the connection is not hard-wired, the drop-down list box will only indicate,
whether negative reactance- or minimizing circulating current principle is used
(NRP/MCC).
If the single mode is used, manual or automatic control can be selected in the drop-
down list box. The raise and lower 'arrow keys' are available if the regulator is in
manual mode.
The voltage value of the regulator is presented in the field. If the warning limit is
exceeded, the value is shown in yellow, and if the alarm limit is exceeded, the value
is shown in red.
The reference voltage field can be used for setting the reference voltage of the
regulator. A new value can be entered if the parallel mode or the automatic control
is selected first. The reference voltage is accepted only if it is between 0.85...
1.15*Nominal voltage, otherwise an information message of an illegal reference
voltage value is shown on the dialog information bar and the old value is returned
into the field.

Protection tripping tag
7.1.
Functional description
The Trip Tag is used for indicating a protection trip of a switching device. The
protection stage causing the trip is showed by the means of a red tag nearby the
switching device that is operated by the protection unit. This tag remains until the
tripping has been succeeded and the alarm is acknowledged, even if the status of the
switching device is changed.
If the protection is being configured to latch the trip tag shows the text LATCH until
the protection unit has been reset locally or remotely and the switching device can
be closed again.
It is possible to configure the trip tag to use either a database of its own and/or event
objects of the SPACOM units. With a database of the trip tag the user has a free
choice of symbol sets for the trip tag, whereas the linked events have already
predefined symbols.

10.1.
REC 501 when used via Opera
The network topology system OPERA can also use station pictures with
disconnectors installed for operating purposes. This is convenient in case of multiple
switching devices in a node (see Figure 10.1.1.-1). Then a picture (a schematic
connection diagram) can be opened via Opera and the actual REC 501 control
dialogs are opened by selecting them from the station picture.
In case of a single switching device, it is often more suitable to open the plain control
dialog on an empty picture. Then it is not even necessary to make any schematic
connection diagram, instead the operation dialog is presented directly. This is done
by creating a picture consisting of a single picture function made specially for this
purpose.
The picture function consists of a grey background covering the whole picture and
of the configuration support (the base picture function is not required). The
configuration is done as for the normal picture function for REC 501. When the
disconnector is selected on the Opera display, the picture with the switching device
is opened with the control dialog already open, ready to be executed.
The picture functions are found under \LIB4\LIB510\Network Topology\ in the
installation tool tree. The configuration of the picture function is done as for the
normal picture function.
10.1.1.
Differences compared to an ordinary REC 501
• The picture function has no state indication since it is not presented as a button.
• During configuration the questions regarding the outlook and symbol are left out.
• The Base function is not required
• The dialogs are the same, only picture function and its configuration files are
different

DTU when used via Opera
The network topology system OPERA can also use station pictures with
disconnectors installed for operating purposes. This is convenient in case of multiple
switching devices in a node (see Figure 11.1.1.-1). Then a picture (a schematic
connection diagram) can be opened via Opera and the actual DTU control dialogs
are opened by selecting them from the station picture.
The
configuration is done as for the normal picture function DTU. When the
disconnector is selected on the Opera display, the picture with the switching device
is opened with the control dialog already open, ready to be executed.
The picture functions are found under \LIB4\LIB510\Network Topology\ in the
installation tool tree. The configuration of the picture function is done as for the
normal picture function.
11.1.1.
Differences compared to an ordinary DTU
• The picture function has no state indication since it is not presented as a button.
• During configuration the questions regarding the outlook and symbol are left out.
• The Base function is not required
• The dialogs are the same, only picture function and its configuration files are
different

Normal state settings dialog
The normal state settings dialog can be opened by selecting State settings... which
can be found by clicking the More button in the main control dialog.
The normal value has a meaning only, if all spontaneous object state changes are
defined to activate an alarm (= the LA attribute value of the indication object is 15).
The value of normal state is checked at system start-up. If the state of an object at
start-up is not equal to normal state, an alarm is activated. If normal state is not
defined, an alarm is not activated at start-up regardless of the object state.
For details, please refer to the Normal state settings dialog in the General chapter (in
the MV Process Operator’s Manual), which contains more detailed information.
11.5.8.
Operation countings dialog
The operation countings dialog can be opened by selecting Operation countings...
which can be found by clicking the More button in the main control dialog.
The number of selected switch state changes is tracked with the help of the operation
countings. The counter is increased with one every time the switching device is
closed (which means that the indication object in the MicroSCADA database
receives value 1).
For details, please refer to the Operation countings dialog in the General chapter (in
MV Process Operator’s Manual), which contains more detailed information.
11.5.9.
Object messages dialog
The object messages dialog can be opened by selecting Object messages... which
can be found by clicking the More button in the main control dialog.
An overall picture of the DTU state can be seen in the dialog. The dialog shows
information messages active at the moment the dialog is opened. The most important
active message is also shown on the information bar in the main dialog.
Functionality
A new "snapshot" can be shown by pressing Refresh. The dialog can be closed by
pressing Close. If the messages do not fit into one view, they can be viewed with the
scrollbar. For details, please refer to the General chapter in the MV Process
Operator’s Manual, which contains more detailed information about the Object
messages dialog.

Time synchronization dialog
A common dialog for synchronizing the clock of the DTU and SPEF stations.
Execution time is the first time when the synchronization is executed. The
synchronization is made in a cycle defined by the time interval combo box.
Normally, the time does not need to be synchronized more than once a day, so a 24
hour cycle is recommended to be used.
The station numbers of the selected DTU station and the corresponding SPEF station
are in the field on the right-hand side. If these stations are included in the time
synchronization, the toggle-button Include stations in time sync. is pressed down.
The list of stations within time synchronization is written into the file /lib4/fmod/
mvprocess/use/fpu_dtus.txt. Execution time and time interval are the same for all
stations included in time synchronization by this dialog!
Functionality
Operations can be made, if the authorization level of the operator is Control (1) or
higher. The execution time is set with the arrow buttons or the value is directly
entered into the field. Time interval is selected from the combo box. The selected
DTU station and SPEF station are included or removed from the list with the toggle
button Include stations in time sync. The operations are applied by pressing OK. By
