Few come to Italy without thinking that it would be delightful to live there. The Italian peninsula,
besides being surpassingly beautiful, shows more material evidence of human genius than anywhere
else in the world; nowhere in the world is la dolce vita more dolce.
But it is not given to man to live in perfect contentment. As Horace said two millennia ago, ―They
change their skies, not their souls, who run across the sea.‖ Human discontent springs eternal, even in
the most exquisite surroundings. Maybe that explains the major demonstrations in all of Italy’s major
cities on the 50th anniversary of Stalin’s death; many of those marching carried portraits of the Little
Father of the Peoples that bore the legend: ―We render homage to Joseph Stalin.‖
During an earlier trip to Italy, I attended a neo-fascist rally addressed by Mussolini’s granddaughter
Alessandra. A doctor who acts like a starlet and who has allowed nude photos of herself to appear in
the media, she nevertheless received an enthusiastic greeting from the party faithful. ―Duce! Duce!
Duce!‖ they roared, their faces contorted in hatred and frustration. But what frustrated them, and what
did they hate? What motivates men to remain loyal to dreadful political ideologies, decades after their
murderous failure has become inescapable?
1. Italy is presented here as a place...
A/ where a small group of foreigners might wish to settle C/ whose inhabitants are fairly materialistic
B/ where Stalin is generally seen as a mythical person
D/ where life is better organized than elsewhere
2. The author seems to wonder at ...
A/ the popularity of communism in Italy
C/ the intensity of Italy's political life
B/ the stability of Italian politics
D/ how important myths are in politics
3. The author thinks that ...
A/ loyalty in politics is a rare virtue
C/ both communism and fascism are still dangerous
B/ humans are alike irrrespective of the country
D/ neofascists are a threat to democracy
4. The main feature of the event witnessed by the author may have been a ...
A/ political speech
B/ minute of remembrance
C/ photo session
D/ hate session
==============
Polygraph evidence is accepted in many jurisdictions, notably in America. Although American
military courts will not allow it, the only civilian courts there that have deemed it completely
inadmissible are those of the District of Columbia and the Fourth Circuit (the group of states
immediately south of the Mason-Dixon line). In other states its use is at the judge's discretion.
Unfortunately for people in areas where they are still used, polygraphs do not work—or, more
charitably, are easily duped. That was the conclusion of a report released in 2002 by America's
National Academy of Sciences.
Another apparently promising candidate, voice analysis, does not seem to work either. A study by
Mitchell Sommers of the University of Washington in St Louis, showed that—at least in the case of a
system called Vericator—it is not as reliable as had been thought. Voice analysis can, Dr Sommers
concluded, indicate an individual's level of stress. But that does not correlate with dishonesty.
The problem with both polygraphy and voice analysis is that they rely on second-hand signs of lying
which a good actor can suppress. Furthermore, someone who is telling the truth might exhibit just
these signals, because the very act of being questioned by the authorities is stressful. Instead, current
research is looking directly at the source of lies, the brain itself.
5. As far as lie detectors are concerned ....
A/ Army courts seem to be as reliable as civilian courts
B/ Army courts are like civilian courts in some states, e.g., Virginia
C/ Army courts are more reliable than civilian courts
D/ Army judges have more freedom than most civilian judges
7
6. Voice analysis is questionable because...
A/ of problems with data collection
C/ of problems with data interpretation
B/ criminals can cheat on it more easily than honest people D/ it favours some professions
7. The main problem with polygraphs is that they ...
A/ may wrongly incriminate some individuals
C/ cannot properly diagnose the level of stress
B/ cause unnecessary stress in some people
D/ may wrongly incriminate some and exculpate others

Like all devoted Russians he was half-admiring and wholly resentful of the West; of her prosperity,
her financial power, her almost contemptuous self-assurance. Unlike most Russians he had for years
not been prepared to accept that things could never change in his homeland; that corruption, laziness,
bureaucracy and lethargy were part of the system, always had been and always would be. Even as a
young man he had known he had the energy and the dynamism to change things, given the chance.
