Project 1: Background reading and practice
Before we get started with the practical exercises  and this course is mainly
practical  you need to do some background reading. Here are your instructions for
Project 1, which will take about a week to complete&

Reading
Read Section One: Background Information.
Read and re-read the sections about  Traditional Chinese Medicine and
 The Five Elements until you are comfortable and happy with their contents.
The elements and their main correspondences should be familiar to you. By
all means read the whole manual if you like, but concentrate on these
sections for the time being.
Practical Exercises
There are no practical exercises to carry out in this project.
Project 2: Attunements and Meditations
The essence of the Five Element Healing system is to work with five distinct
energies, represented by five symbols that will be learning shortly. In this project you
will also call in five separate attunements (one for each of the five elemental
energies) and you will be meditating on these energies so that you thoroughly
assimilate them, so that you start to  become these energies. The attunements are
all ready and waiting for you to  call them in .

Read Section Two: Experiencing the Five Energies.
Practical Exercises
Practice drawing out the five symbols until you can reproduce them comfortably and
quickly from memory.
Now you are going to go through five weekly stages where you receive an
attunement to a particular energy and then you spend a week meditating on that
energy. To receive your attunement you have a couple of choices in terms of how
you do this. Here we are using the example of a  Wood energy attunement:
1. If you know about  Hatsurei ho , the daily energy exercises used in Japanese
 Gakkai Reiki, then please go through the sequence; when you have been in
 Seishin Toitsu for a few minutes, release that visualisation, stay in Gassho
and say to yourself  I m ready to receive my Wood attunement from Taggart
now . Stay with your hands in Gassho and let the energy flow, and stay like
that until you feel as if things have settled down and come to an end.
Experiences may vary and the attunements can last for different lengths of
time in different people.
2. If you don t know about  Hatsurei ho then I suggest that you sit yourself down
in a comfortable chair, close you eyes, and listen to some relaxing music for a
while, and feel yourself becoming peaceful and relaxed; feel all your stress
and tension drifting out of you. When you are ready, bring your hands into the
prayer position, take a few long deep breaths, and say to yourself  I m ready
to receive my Wood attunement from Taggart now . Stay with your hands in
the prayer position and let the energy flow, and stay like that until you feel as
if things have settled down and come to an end. Experiences may vary and
the attunements can last for different lengths of time in different people.
You are going to be using a symbol meditation in order to experience the
characteristic qualities of an element. There are two variations that you can find in
the course manual: Meditation #1 and Meditation #2; find out for yourself  through
experimentation  which feels better for you, and use that one. The instruction below
suggest that you spend 20 minutes per day meditating on the energies; this is a
minimum, and if you would like to meditate for longer (for 30 minutes, for example)
then that is fine, and you might decide to meditate on each energy twice a day
perhaps. That is for you to decide.
Week One
Start the week by receiving your attunement to the  Wood energy. See above for
instructions.
Carry out Meditation #1 or Meditation # 2 using the  Wood symbol for twenty minutes
each day.
Keep notes on your experiences.
Week Two
Start the week by receiving your attunement to the  Fire energy. See above for
instructions.
Carry out Meditation #1 or Meditation # 2 using the  Fire symbol for twenty minutes
each day.
Keep notes on your experiences.
Week Three
Start the week by receiving your attunement to the  Earth energy. See above for
instructions.
Carry out Meditation #1 or Meditation # 2 using the  Earth symbol for twenty minutes
each day.
Keep notes on your experiences.
Week Four
Start the week by receiving your attunement to the  Metal energy. See above for
instructions.
Carry out Meditation #1 or Meditation # 2 using the  Metal symbol for twenty minutes
each day.

Week Five
Start the week by receiving your attunement to the  Water energy. See above for
instructions.

Some Questions for you to think about
Think about the experiences you had when meditating on the five energies. For each
energy, consider:
1. How do you experience that energy?
2. How does it feel?
3. What is its essence?
4. What states does it elicit?
Also:
1. What are the differences between the five energies?
2. How do they affect you?
Project 3: Self-treatments
Now you are going to start to use the five energies on yourself by carrying out self-
treatments each day. After getting to grips with dowsing, you will be dowsing the
state of your elements each day as you do this to see what effect the self-treatments
have on your elemental picture.

Read Section Three: Working on Your Self.
Practical Exercises
Dowsing
Practise dowsing until you are getting some consistent  yes and  no answers,
and you feel comfortable and confident in using a pendulum. I suggest that
you practise looking at the state of people s chakras. This is not part of the
Five Element Healing system, but it will allow you to gain confidence in using
a pendulum.
Dowse the state of your own chakras, dowse the state of some guinea pigs
chakras, and you can even dowse the state of people s chakras at a distance
by focusing your attention on them and asking the relevant questions.
Once you have gotten to grips with dowsing and feel confident in using a
pendulum, you should move on to do this:
Self-treatments
Carry out a self-treatment for 15 minutes per day. At the start of each session
you should dowse the state of your chakras using the dowsing grid and record
the result on the  Bar Chart Worksheet provided. Self-treat each day for 14
days.
Some Questions for you to think about
Consider these areas:
1. What did you experience when you self-treated?
2. What changes did you notice within yourself during the 14 day period?
3. How did the state of your elements change over time?
Project 4: Detecting energy imbalances
You now have a good grounding in Five Element theory, you have been working with
the energies in order to become thoroughly familiar with them, you have been
treating yourself and working with a pendulum. Now we start to work on other people.
What you are going to be doing in this project is to look at the state of other people s
elements. We can do this in three ways. One of the methods we will use is to dowse,
and you are already familiar with this, but there are two new techniques for you to
learn and practise on people if you wish. They are not essential, but may reinforce
your belief in the use of the pendulum
You should practise on as many people as you can during this project; the more
practice the better.
Take your time with this project. You are looking to get to the stage where the three
 detection methods generally agree with each other. This will help to give you
confidence. But if you are already perfectly confident in the use of a pendulum then
perhaps you don t really needs to spend much time getting to grips with the other two
methods.

Three detection methods
For each person you practise on, you will be performing three detection
techniques. I suggest that you use this order:

them,  tuning in to them and using the dowsing grid. Record your
findings on a  Bar Chart Worksheet .
2. Now palpate the Hara in the way described in the manual. Go on your
first impressions; do not take too long because if you do you will
change things. Here we are looking to find the extremes: the greatest
excess and the greatest deficiency of chi. You are not trying to detect
fine gradations of excess or deficiency. Record your findings on a  Bar
Chart Worksheet .
3. Now sense the energy above the Hara in the way described in the
manual. Go on your first impressions; do not take too long because if
you do you will change things. Here we are looking to find the
extremes: the greatest excess and the greatest deficiency of chi. You
are not trying to detect fine gradations of excess or deficiency. Record
your findings on a  Bar Chart Worksheet .
4. Do these imbalances  make sense in terms of the correspondences of
the elements and what you know of the physical/mental/emotional state
of the recipient? Make a note of this.
Some Questions for you to think about
For each person you practised on, consider:
1. The result of your dowsing
2. The result of your palpation
3. The result of your sensing
4. What do you think of the imbalances you detected
Project 5: Balancing and Treating
Now that you are confident in determining the state of another person s elements, we
need to learn what to do to bring things into balance for them long-term. That is what
this project is all about.
There are two distinct stages that you go through during a Five Element Healing
session, once you ve detected the imbalances. First you will be learning how to
balance someone s elements  temporarily. This is a necessary step that leads on to
and sets the stage for the most important part of the healing session: treating these
elements

Practical Exercises

Treat the person s elements in the way described in the manual, making
contact with all elements, and spending proportionately longer working on the
elements that were most out of balance.
Do the imbalances you detected  make sense in terms of the
correspondences of the elements and what you know of the
physical/mental/emotional state of the recipient? Make a note of this.
Some Questions for you to think about
For each person you practised on, consider:
1. The result of your dowsing
2. The result of your palpation / sensing
3. What do you think of the imbalances you detected: do the imbalances
 make sense in terms of the correspondences of the elements and
what you know of the physical/mental/emotional state of the recipient?
4. What did you experience when balancing the elements?
5. What did you experience when you treated the elements?

Project 6: Case Study
To bring this course to a close, you will be carrying on a series of at least five weekly
Five Element treatments on one person. You will be dowsing the state of their
elements at the beginning of each treatment; you will be recording their comments
and your experiences.

Read Section Five: Balancing and Treating Someone s Elements (Summary of
Treatment technique)
Practical Exercises
Carry out one treatment each week on one person, for five consecutive weeks
ideally.
For each treatment you will begin by detecting their element imbalances,
recording your results on the  Bar chart worksheet , balancing their elements, and
treating their elements, spending more time working on the elements that were most
out of balance.
At the end of the treatment, record their elemental state on the  Client Record Sheet
and make a note of anything interesting you experienced or they said. What do you
think of the imbalances you detected: do the imbalances  make sense in terms of
the correspondences of the elements and what you know of the
physical/mental/emotional state of the recipient?
Project 7: Going Freestyle
If you would like to develop and simplify your practice of Five Element Healing, I have
included amongst the course materials a  Going Freestyle guide which moves on
from the basic system you have worked with, to focus more on the use of pure
intuition and the use of intent.
