SCOTLAND
Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. Half a million people live there. It is famous for the
Edinburgh Festival, which takes place in August.
Scottish Gaelic is one of the languages of Scotland. It is very different to English and not many
people speak it.
St Andrew s Cross is a symbol on the Scottish national flag. It looks like a letter X.
The thistle is a wild plant with purple or white flowers and prickly leaves. It is the national emblem
of Scotland.
Tartan is a pattern of colourful lines and squares. You can see tartan patterns on traditional Scottish
clothes.
Edinburgh Castle is a big castle in the centre of Edinburgh. It is a museum now. People believe that
ghosts of musicians live in the castle.
Loch Ness is a large lake in the Scottish mountains. Some people believe that a monster called
Nessie lives in the lake.
Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Britain. It is 1,344 metres high.
National Gallery of Scotland is a large art gallery in Edinburgh. It has got a large collection of
famous paintings.
The Scottish Highlands is a region in the west of Scotland. You can walk in the mountains, go
kayaking on the lakes or visit historic castles there.
The Holyrood Palace is the Queen s residence in Edinburgh. Tourists can visit the palace when the
Royal Family is not there.
St. Andrews Golf Course is the oldest golf course in the world. It is over 600 years old.

ENGLAND
London is the capital city of England. Eight million people live there. London has got a lot of
attractions: historic buildings, museums and the biggest toy shop in the world!
St. George s Cross is a symbol which you can see it on the national flag of England.
The red rose is the national emblem of England. You can see it on T-shirts of the English rugby
team.
Three lions are a symbol of England. You can see them in the logo of the English national football
team.
Buckingham Palace is the Queen s residence in London. In the palace, tourists can see historic
furniture and a wonderful art collection.
Big Ben is the name which people use for the clock and the clock tower in London, but it is really
the name of the bell inside the tower.
The Globe Theatre was a theatre in London where William Shakespeare performed his plays 400
years ago. Today you can visit the reconstruction of the original theatre.
The Tower of London is a historic castle in London. In the past it was a palace and a prison. Now
it is a museum.
Tate Gallery was a famous art gallery in London. In 2000, it changed its name to Tate and is now a
network of four art museums in England.
Stratford-upon-Avon is a town in the east of England. William Shakespeare was born there. You can
visit his house and see the houses of his family.
Roman Baths are a tourist attraction in the English city of Bath. They are a bathing complex with
natural hot water. The Romans built them over 2000 years ago.

WALES
Cardiff is the capital city of Wales. Over 300,000 people live there. Tourists come to Cardiff to see
historic buildings and watch rugby matches at the Millenium Stadium.
Welsh is the second most popular language in Wales after English. Over 20% Welsh people can speak
it. It is very different to English.
The red dragon is a symbol of Wales and you can see it on the Welsh flag.
The daffodil is a yellow flower which grows in spring. It is the emblem of Wales.
The leek is another emblem of Wales. It is a long thin vegetable which is white at one end and has
green leaves at the other end. It tastes similar to an onion.
Gresford Bells are the bells in a church in the village of Gresford. They are famous for their
beautiful sound.
St. Winefride s Well is a well in North Wales. People believe that the water from the well has got
magical powers and it can help someone who is very ill.
Llangollen Bridge is a historic stone bridge in the town of Llangollen. There is a wonderful view
from the bridge and you can watch canoeing competitions on the river.
Wrexham Steeple is a beautiful church tower from the 16th century in Wrexham, in the north of
Wales. It is over 40 metres high.
Overton yew trees are famous yew trees in Overton. Some of them are 900 years old!
Pistyll Rhaedr is a spectacular waterfall in the mountains in Wales. It is 80 metres high.
Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales. It is 1,085 metres high. You can take the train to the top
of the mountain.
