Iliolumbar ligament, iliac crest;
occasionally from upper borders of
transverse processes of lower three or
four lumbar vertebrae
Insertion
Inferior border of last rib and transverse
processes of upper four lumbar vertebrae
Actions
Assists in extension, laterally flexes
(sidebends) the lumbar spine, and
depresses the last rib
Bilaterally, acting with the diaphragm fixes
the last two ribs during respiration
