I: It's May 1st, and we are in the centre of London in the middle of an enormous demonstration. People are handing out leaflets with information. There are all kinds of people here, but what exactly are they protesting about?
Jake
I: Excuse me! Yes, you. What are you doing here?
J: I'm protesting against globalisation. Multinational companies cause a lot of pollution. They are polluting the world's rivers and seas, and they don't care - they just want to make as much money as possible. I'm also giving out peaceful protest leaflets and T-shirts. There are some people here who want violence, but most people are here to protest in a peaceful way. Me, I'm a supporter of peaceful action.
I: Thank you.
Debbie
I: Excuse me. Can you tell me what you're doing here?
D: Well, I'm in favour of many of the causes here but I'm here today with a group of women from Manchester. We're demonstrating for equal pay for women. Women still earn less than men in most jobs, and it's time for that to change. I'm not anti-men - I just want a fairer system. Would you like to sign our petition?
I: Er, yes, sure, thank you.
Ronny
I: Hi there! Can you tell me what you're doing here?
R: I'm selling veggie burgers. I'm against cosmetic companies that use animals in their experiments. At home I have three dogs, two cats and a pet mouse called Jerry. They are my friends. I support animal rights and I'm protesting against cruelty to animals. All right?
I: Good luck.
Caroline
I: Excuse me. What are you doing here?
C: I'm having fun with my friends. I don't feel strongly about politics and I don't know much about it. This is my first demonstration. My friends and I are against student fees - we're demanding financial aid from the government. We want the government to pay. I know so many people who don't go to college because they don't want to get into debt. I don't really care about globalisation and stuff, but students are really important. I mean, we're the future of the country, aren't we?
