a row of small terraced houses; they seem small but very well-maintained
a cosy sitting room, possibly in an old house because the room is spacious with a large fire place and old-fashioned furniture
a housing estate consisting of several high-rise blocks of flats
2.
between the 1960s and 1990s the population of the large cities decreased and that of the smaller towns increased considerably
this might be caused by migration from the big cities into the countryside and to smaller towns in search of cheaper housing and more peace and quiet
3.
a large city centre offers easy access to various facilities (shops, schools, hospitals) and entertainment, it is also easier to find a job in a large city
living in a village is more relaxing and quieter, you can enjoy nature. Accommodation is cheaper and the cost of living is lower than in the city
4.
Choose one of the three below:
the small terraced house could be an ideal home because although it gives you the privacy of a house, and has a bit of a garden, it is fairly small so it wouldn't be very expensive to maintain. It could be very cosy. It probably is in the suburbs, so it is a compromise between living in the country and the city
the large old house is probably in the country and could be an ideal home for someone who enjoys contact with nature and would like to have a lot of space for a large family. The old-fashioned furniture would be suitable for someone who is not very fond of modern design
a modern flat in the city would be ideal for someone who prefers urban life with easy access to cultural institutions and places of entertainment. A flat in a block of flats is easier and probably cheaper to maintain than a house

Introduction:
• age determines your needs
Young people care for:
• entertainment, social life, higher education facilities,
modern technology, trendy shopping
The young usually don't care for:
• peace and quiet, privacy, nature, neighbours
Middle-aged people care for:
• good schools for their children, privacy, comfort, style,
security, friendly neighbours
They usually don't mind:
• the cost, distance to work, difficult access to night life
The elderly require:
• security, peace and quiet, good access to health care, easy
shopping, public transport, 'age-friendly buildings' (no
stairs)
The elderly don't look for:
• night life, trendy shopping, education facilities
Therefore:
the young tend to choose living in rented rooms or self-contained flats in the city centre with easy access to universities, work and entertainment
middle-aged people prefer and can afford to live in detached or semi-detached houses in the suburbs
the elderly choose to live in one-storey bungalows or cottages in small, quiet towns with good hospitals
2 Introduction:
• it may seem that living in a house in the country is a gua
rantee of more privacy than living in a flat in the city
Because:
• if you live in a detached house, you are less likely to hear or
meet your neighbours than someone living in a flat
However this may not give you more privacy because:
people in the country tend to live in closely-knit communities, they tend to be more nosy, it is hard to remain anonymous in a village and if you try to do that you may offend your neighbours
city dwellers naturally keep more distance to strangers, people may live next door for years and never enquire about each other's profession or family
Conclusion:
• people living in houses in the country certainly don't have
the same problems with noisy neighbours as those living in
flats in the city, but it does not necessarily mean that they
enjoy more privacy
